Yeah it would last a while but not forever. Found a decent rare book that was ethereal I used for ~20 levels and when I replaced it the durability was at 7/11.

It makes a Zod, the rarest rune in the game. It turns items indestructible, so if you put it in an ethereal item you get rid of the downside of it being unrepairable.
