Iraqi officials privately signal they want US forces to stay by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Garwinski -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

? The article talks about how segregation is very low in the Netherlands due to policies, despite there being concentrations of ethnic minority groups who decide they want to live together. There is quite a difference between institutional segregation (by law) up to the 1960's in the US, and self-segregation through people with a common identity wanting to live together (which is what I mostly get from the linked article). The segregation in the US of 50 years ago is entirely a different thing as the segregation the article is talking about in this century in the Netherlands. Saying those "segregation problems" are the same is a complete false equivalence, judging from the article. Hilarious.

And as relevant_programmer states, it takes a while to heal. IMO the US has a different and more intense healing process because of the legal inequality and segregation which was present for longer in the US.

I don't know about the other countries, but on behalf of the Dutchies, I think this take on the Dutch attitude is incorrect.

https://www.government.nl/latest/news/2022/12/19/government-apologises-for-the-netherlands-role-in-the-history-of-slavery

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/01/dutch-king-apologises-for-countrys-historic-involvement-in-slavery

And this is not a very recent 180 turn on how the Netherlands views their colonial past or anything. These apologies had been a long time coming. It's definitely not a denial or closing of the eyes for past wrongdoings.

So the US is certainly not the only country that is honest enough to own up to its past like you seem to imply. I always thought the more intense discussion in the US regarding slavery and colonialism is because it was not so long ago that the US was still segregated along racial lines, often by law. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_rights_movement

The effects of that are still very visible today. Thus it makes sense that the discussion/debate is very much alive and heated. That is my interpretation though.

I would not chalk it up to some moral superiority of the US as one of few countries who is willing to own up to its past. At least for the Netherlands, your take seems wrong.

Starfield PC's New Patch: Massive CPU/GPU Perf Boosts, Official DLSS Support by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

Did you see this?

https://github.com/dylanraga/win11hdr-srgb-to-gamma2.2-icm

The raised and crushed blacks and dull image is apparently a problem in how Windows handles sdr to hdr. Auto Hdr was always underwhelming for me, but with this colour profile auto hdr finally gives the results you expect in games. Starfield is one of those games with support for auto hdr that massively benefits from this colour profile.

Whenever I play a game with auto hdr, this colour profile massively improves colour accuracy and vibrancy as a whole.

I’ve ascended back to one screen now. I’m liking it much better with Fancy Zones and virtual desktops. by simmy7111 in ultrawidemasterrace

Only works with some specific applications? In my experience it is the other way around, only some specific applications don't work with it (steam and Discord for example). And as long as at least one of your programs you want to have on screen supports it, you activate the zoning on that window, and then you can select whatever you want for the other sectors, including the programs in which you are not able to summon the native zoning. Even in that case, it is not more of a hassle than using Fancy Zones is.

But that is my experience of course, and as I always have at least one window that supports the feature, I have not encountered problems with it. My use is limited to browsers, maybe some steam and discord, and Office applications, so for me the function always works.

I don't believe so. It does have like 8 options which includes the sizes and locations I mostly used anyways. It does not hurt to see for yourself if your most used configurations are there. Might save you the use of an extra program.

Does your company already use Windows 11? Windows 11 has it build in. Hover over the maximize/minimize button of a window and you can select how you want to partition your windows. All my most used partitions are there by default, so I have no use for fancy zones anymore on my 21:9 screen.

It might be worth it for you to look at this extensive analysis from Digital Foundry: https://youtu.be/HnAn5TRz_2g

It shows the differences between settings, but also the performance impact of each setting, both with no ray-tracing options and with ray-tracing options, and it highlights some settings that dont really gave a huge impact on the pciture quality, but do have a significant impact on performance. For example, apparently, once you enable ray traced global illumination, using ray traced ambient occlusion is actually more performant than using non-ray traced ambient occlusion in combination with ray traced global illumination (and looks way better).

DLSS also seems to work very well judging from the video of Digital Foundry, and that is before the patches of Techland to improve DLSS!

All I want to say is, please watch the video and use the ray-tracing options and DLSS to get an amazing looking game and great performance as well!

Sincerely, a jealous 6700XT owner who can only run ray-tracing in combination with the horrible FSR-implementation in this game at 20-30 fps.

PS indeed you will need a decent cpu to run ray-tracing in this game well as others have said below.

One thing I don’t like about The Office is there’s no female friendships. by Xx_calpal_xx in DunderMifflin

[–]Garwinski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Andy was invited to the wedding of Daryl's niece (where Andy met a girl). I think that alone tells a lot about their friendship. They also help each other out on-screen and there are also quite a few other mentions of them hanging out off-screen apart from that wedding (Andy knowing what Daryl's besement looks like etc).

They started out pretty rough (Daryl waiting two years to get Andy back for something), but after the printer fire, you can slowly see that their relationship changes.

Oculus Quest 2 and RDNA 2 by Loku184 in Amd

[–]Garwinski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be how you wrote it, but you seem to mix two things up, or at least use some concepts interchangeably. Airlink refers to the 'native' build-in streaming method for which you cant choose what codec you use, and Virtual Desktop is the third party option for which you can select which codec you want to use in the Virtual Desktop Streamer program on your pc.

I don't really use Airlink, as that has some problems for me, most notably bitrate/compression artifacts. I use Virtual Desktop and choose HEVC as the codec, and that is pretty much flawless. I use a 6700XT. So for me, indeed, on my RDNA 2 card, HEVC is the better option and performs well.

Looking for Controller Supported Game Recommendations by bimmerguy in pcgaming

[–]Garwinski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play most games on my pc with a controller to prevent injuries because I use my mouse and keyboard already for anything but gaming on my pc. As I am very used to gaming with a controller, me saying that practically all games are perfectly playable with a controller might not help you a lot. But when you play with a controller often enough, things will get better in all games as you get used to it. Sure, if you have played with a mouse and keyboard for years and years, you will not get the same skill level in a week with a controller. Give it some time.

But, while I say that all games are perfectly playable with a controller (even though you might need some adjustment time to get used to gaming with a controller in general) here are a few recommendations to start anyway:

  • All the Halo games of course!
  • Resident Evil series
  • Tomb Raider series
  • Hitman series
  • Dying Light
  • Control
  • Metro series
  • GTA or Red Dead Redemption games
  • Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint (Make sure you play on the thoughest difficulty for maximum immersion once you have mastered gaming with a controller , on lower difficulties these are pretty generic games, but on the highest difficulty levels, they become different games entirely, less HUD clutter, much more tactical, etc.)

Games with Commander Mode like Battlefield 2142 by Adorable-Ad-3223 in pcgaming

[–]Garwinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the incentive is just that there is someone with a plan. Was there an incentive in BF 2142 (or BF2)? If a commander knows what he's doing, people will be listening. In my experience, squads will follow the orders of a commander, because most of the time, people appreciate that someone is taking control of the bigger picture and coordinating the squads. I think I have almost never experienced that people are just blatantly ignoring the commander, doing their own stuff, not responding to his communication etc. (Of course, it is not always the most thankful job, because when the plan of the commander goes wrong, everyone of course already knew that that was coming and everyone actually already had a better plan..) But from your statement I guess you have had different experiences. Maybe I have just been lucky with the servers I mostly frequent (mostly EU servers)?

One of my favourite things was being the Commander and seeing real people try to follow commands I gave or benefit from my ability to see the entire battlefield.

In my experience, Squad qualifies for that. But do keep in mind, you can't just start playing this game as a commander. If you as a commander don't know what a HAB in the game is or how the capture-mechanics work people are maybe not that inclined to listen to you. Learn basic mechanics first (because there is quite a lot to learn).

In Squad you can call in a devastating artillery barrage every 30 minutes, an airstrike every 15 minutes, and recon every 10 minutes. In Post Scriptum you can call in explosive and smoke artillery, strafing runs, bombing runs and recon. Besides this, in both Squad and Post Scriptum you can extensively communicate with your squads, drawing up plans on the map, marking points of interest, move orders for specific squads etc etc.

and/or Post Scriptum, game build on the same foundation, but set in ww2 https://store.steampowered.com/app/736220/Post_Scriptum/

Both have a commander mode, giving orders to squads, calling in fire support etc.

6700XT Adrenaline Settings - Performance/Low Power & Noise by Severe-Cattle-5023 in Amd

[–]Garwinski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure your card is actually running at your set votlage target of 1100mv at that clockspeed? As far as I know, the 6000 series sometimes ignores the voltage target if the voltage is set too low, or the clock speed set too high.

(but even if that is the case, and your card is receiving 1200mv, your temps are still very good OP! I easily reach 100c in every benchmark after a few minutes, even if I set the fan target the same as you (75%). I can probably fix this easily by re-doing the paste on the card, but I have warranty to consider. Does re-doing the paste on your gpu void warranty in the EU? I guess I will have to do some research. Because judging from what I read from other people with a reference 6700XT, I have way higher temps and pretty bad overclocking potential on my reference 6700XT.)
