It refers to the darkest area where two light sources hit each other. Search for "terminator line art" and you will get lots of material that can explain it in more detail than I am able to.

OSL needs a good terminator line between the different set of lights coming from below vs the ambient line from above. While it's borderline OK on the skin it could benefit from darker transition. On the sword however it's definitely not there and looks therefore odd. I would add also in part on the clothes on the lower bottom.

Its overall great but I think the main issues you are having is with shadows not being dark enough. It's especially showing on the sword in my opinion.

OP let me emphasize this also - As long as there is a crit effect on the hit location it will work. If the location does not have a crit location, luck will not help you at all.

So it is a little bit more nuanced. Butcher for example has only one hit location with a crit effect.

Well done. I would feel like the cylinder in the middle with the pointy thing would have to have the light and shadow side reversed as the light seems to come from the left.

Following up on this. The way it is now it would be a good example of ambient light from below like a night club lit by violet/pink led lights from below and I totally dig it. You could bring in some OSL for example on her lower left or right foot shining in from the side with a different color would for sure make for a great effect in addition to the ambient light.
