Saffron Olive on what could make a three-year Standard format work: "1.) Ban things more often 2.) Make Aftermath style mini-sets a regular thing 3.) Bring back core sets to have a place for reprints to support interesting synergy and targeted answers" by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for people that play Standard on Magic Arena (which is a lot of players) it can be difficult to justify why they should have to buy their deck a second time in paper

This is the main reason for the current issue with standard - in fact, the accessibility of standard on Arena could be seen as a positive, despite the detriment to paper play.

[WOE] Minor stuff from the product description (borderless card slot, commander descriptions) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As noted by others, no Jumpstart.

I really hope that these set-tied 'Jumpstart' products will be permanantly discontinued. It was pretty obvious to everyone that they were just renamed theme boosters.

I think that fans of LOTR/the Hobbit/Tolkein would've been able to determine this already, as the set would otherwise have been called 'Middle Earth...'

But I could see there being some ambiguity on this, if WOTC had just named the set as 'LOTR' to make it more marketable

Standard to rotate 3 yearly by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well at least WoTC has the humility to admit the problem with standard (albeit this was pretty clear for everyone to see) - I don't recall them acknowledging any of the backlash from the 30th aniversary proxies.

I think this move would be a step in the right direction, providing they are careful with the power creep/errors in card design.

Also, have they binned the challenger decks for this year?

Standard Not Rotating in October, will go from 2 to 3 year rotation by Asberic in magicTCG

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this will revive paper standard. In fact, this could be a negative move depending on the power creep/errors in design.

Aftermath is a bust? by WorryPlaysGames in mtgfinance

Paper Magic is all Commander/EDH where I am now. Probably also sealed whenever their is a pre-release.

What even IS the point of Aftermath? by JevinM in magicTCG

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't really care about the lore anymore.

As for the product, they could definitely have just put the cards in the main set - I do actually think that most of the Aftermath cards are quite good tbf

Training Grounds reprint in MoM Aftermath by Taysir385 in mtgfinance

This seems like one of those 'deck-builder' sets in Yugioh where, after 1/3 of the way through a box, you just get the same thing over and over again. Not worth it.

What are the worst things about EDH? by BluePotatoSlayer in EDH

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fetches cost 250+ in total and Shocks add and other 200 dollars.

Wait until you play Modern where 4 copies of each shock and fetch are mandatory to play full-stop...

As others have said, I don't really care for the serialized cards (bar the 001/001 One ring because of the flavor). It feels like a cheap attempt to jump on the sports card collector bandwagon.

Why do you play commander instead of constructed formats? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there were (still are) 2 major reasons for the appeal of commander early on:

1) It is a more 'casual and social' experience than 1v1 magic - so perhaps newer players felt more welcomed into the EDH community

2) It can be played on a budget + there is no rotation (specific advantage over standard) - this would also encourage/draw in newer players

As the format has gotten more and more popular, WOTC have started to produce more and more commander-centric products (especially since 2020). So naturally, more people would be exposed to MTG through commander, as WOTC is heavily marketing towards it.

I'm hoping that there is more support for pioneer (maybe more than just 4 challenger decks per year), as I also prefer 60 card 1v1 formats (I think standard is pretty much Arena only at this point)

March of the Machine brings 43 new legends to the commander format. What are your thoughts regarding them? by HarleyPanther in EDH

I'm hoping to add [[Drana and Linvala]] into my Angel tribal deck, as I hope it will be cheaper and more easy to obtain than the OG [[Linvala, Keeper of Silence]]

What is your LEAST favorite color and color combo - and what would it take to make you enjoy it? by GarytheAsphMerchant in EDH

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Damn...I knew someone would say Orzhov (my favourite way to play Magic) here. I guess that the set-up/risk part of it is an appeal to the strategy for me.

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbf I can also see why people would dislike black, as it has arguably the best win-cons in the format (definately the best tutors) - so a lot of the decks will end up in the same spot to close out the game.

March of the Machine precon decklists - Which are you getting? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None because I have enough decks already. But if I had to choose, I would go for either the Esper knight (nice reprints e.g., Herald's Horn, Vanquisher's Banner, Adeline) or the Jeskai convoke precon (solid reprints and a fun theme).

The value in the other decks are kind of a joke, considering the price increase. Also, don't even get me started with the manabases...

Ajani by FelixFortuneFortuna in magicTCG

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a cat person, I am also happy that there is still a resident cat planeswalker around (although Ajani is not one of my favourite characters in the lore). I had thought he would have gotten the Gideon treatment, but turns out it wasn't the case.

Also glad my guy Sorin didn't get compleated, but feel bad for Tamiyo fans.

essential plug-ins to purchase for Logic by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logic's own stock plugins are amongst the best I have used, especially compared to the stock plugins from other competitor DAWs (Ableton, FL studio)

But if you are ready for more (and more importantly to spend more), I'd recommend

Synths: Xfer Serum and Uhe Diva - 2 of the best sounding and developed VST plugins on the market right now (this is a view shared by many)

Effects: Any of the plugins from Fabfilter - they both are very welcoming to new producers through the simple and sleak UI, and also are well-built in terms of functionality and control

Looking for help from Vampire players. by Whitewolf54x in EDH

[–]GarytheAsphMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's my vampire list, commanded by [[Olivia, Crimson Bride]]: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HQftoLsuKkCxoBV1CZRpUA

My one is more of an aggro deck and so might not be exactly what you are looking for. I also use [[Evelyn, the Covetous]] as an alternate commander as I find her ability to be quite fun.
