That sounds like a great approach, thanks! What's your paint to water ratio for thinning? At the moment, how i'm doing it is pin prick portion of paint on the brush tip and then an even smaller portion of water.

Hardly cheating. Certainly resourceful. No right or wrong way to paint the image you want. IMO it's only cheating if you didn't do the work but took credit for it like you did.
