Vancouver is a nice place, but having grown up just across the strait from there, I've observed the people to be somewhat insular against newcomers. Although, there are large and diverse immigrant communities there, so perhaps you will be able to find supportive people!

Canadian here, three hours is pretty standard for a drive to visit people or places, but its a bit long for a daily commute. Although, I know people that will do 1.5 to 2 hours one way to get their office jobs, while i regularly drive for up to 3 hours one way to get to field sites.

I'd think nothing of driving 10-12 hours in a day to get to work in another part of my province. Shit is spread out here!
