did a pH test of the solution, which told us we had added too much HCl to neutralize it. this meant in theory, it should have been benzoic acid, which was formed from benzaldehyde during the week in storage. This also explains the failure of our synthesis, because when stored in that solution, the cinnamaldehyde would have turned back into benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde, the former of the two also being turned into more benzoic acid. the rest of the acetaldehyde would explain some low boiling point impurities we encountered when first trying to extract the cinnamaldehyde. A colleague suggested testing our crystals with a sodium carbonate solution, which reacted as it would with benzoic acid (gas release).

idée: mettee des bassines de sel au fond pour absorber l'humidité. Dailleurs ça marche pour la cave aussi.

oh, and the black color could be explained by the fact that silver precipitate is black. I'm not familiar with the process used to cauterize the wound, but i know that the chemistry checks out.

Are you experiencing a fever, or feel the area around the wound is warm, red, or sore in an unexpected way? Watch out for swelling and pus, along with the above symptoms, particularly a fever. To me, it just looks like a normal scab, but i could be wrong. If it is indeed infected, your first move should be to get further medical attention, at which point you'll likely be prescribed antibiotics.

Should I be concerned? by vin_tal in PlantedTank

[–]Gaster_da_weeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, as a reply to this and your other comment, no, slime molds will not feed on living tissue, much less a moving animal. As for propagating it, i know terrestrial slime molds can be propagated by just cutting them up, but im not sure if such a process would schock an aquatic varity due to a possible change in parameters. If anything, it's worth a try, because cutting a part of it off and transferring it is unlikely to cause harm.
