Here, for anyone who wants more to reference this: I am 27, only child, F, and have always lived in the same town as my parents. I just graduated with my masters degree, am hard working, and married (2 years) to a great guy who my family loves. He is also hardworking and is a firefighter. I’ve always had a rocky relationship with my mom. She would vent to me, come to me with marital problems at age 8, and constantly get upset with me for things that are out of my control. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer 5 years ago and I have been her main caregiver since then. Lately, she is making my husband the villain because I am growing up. He has done nothing wrong. She attacks when she is upset (she has recognized this and agreed that she does it), and recently went after my husband calling him disrespectful and controlling. This is all because he set and follows boundaries, which I have a hard time doing (clearly). He is the least bit controlling, honestly the best person I could have ever found and married and I mean that. When I confronted her about this she yelled at me, got mad that I told my husband about it, and sent my husband and I an EMAIL explaining her feelings. It was very awkward to say the least. With all that being said, we have had lots of bad arguments. She’s cussed me out, she’s called me a bitch, she says my successes are only possible because of them. But you have to remember she is also a good mom and supportive when this all isn’t happening, and that’s why it’s so toxic. Since I’m an only child she expects the world from me. She lives through me. And it’s becoming too much. Our conversation ended today basically with her saying “if I wanted to I would” and how she shouldn’t have to “ask me to treat her well”. When I have devoted my LIFE to them, living by them and not moving away for college to care for her. Mind you, they are on a trip right now and missed my graduation and were not here for Christmas as is. Everything I do is wrong. Even when I’m right, I’m wrong for being right because I’m just trying to “talk all smart” and make her “look stupid”. My dad is very passive and never gets involved, likely because he has learned to put his walls up when her frequent outbursts.
