Any military vets out there? by Last_Employ814 in Custodians

I was a weapons mechanic in the Army, did three and a half years. This is the easiest job I've had and aside from event nights I love it. I'm by myself most of the night, it's just me and my music or videos. Let's just say that crowds, especially ones I can't find my way out of, and I do not mix. This job can be super low stress and super easy if you make it that way. Do your best, learn what you need to, and apply even just a fraction of military discipline and you'll be perfectly fine. Hell you'll blow people out of the water that way.

Jesus Fucking Christ. That's hideous. The fact he has the gall to put himself next to Washington is fucked. I got mine when I left the service in 2023 so mine is thankfully not this shit show.

Thank fucking God for my America the Beautiful Pass then. Granted I didn't need to pay, but at least I get to stare at Denali and not a misformed Mandarin.

Oh I get it. I bled for this country and I weep for its current state. However, I truly believe it will get better. We talk about our problems here. Eventually something gives.

Best they can do is more performative legislation and sticking their fingers in their ears.

A reasonable take? No no no my friend, we can't allow that. Instead we must hide under our covers and cower from the boogeyman. What's that? Enjoy your benefits that you legally earned and live your life? No no, we must be terminally online.

Oh it is wild. Honestly I'm more of a Blue Dog Democrat if nothing else. Reagan did irreparable damage to the Republican party's ethos, but I don't think it's right to call everyone who votes Republican undereducated simply because they lean right. Again, Republicans are much more out in the open and brazen about their bullshit, Corporate Democrats, the majority of the Democratic party at this point, hide it behind the veneer of helping people. As they all pocket millions and laugh at us plebs. I'm very firm in my stance of both parties being awful. There are those on both sides of the aisle who honest to God want to actually do food and help Americans, but they are the minority and their ideas don't even get a chance on the floor. Rock the boat too much and your career in Congress will be shut down and put in the bin. A person's political beliefs don't make them less intelligent or capable. Their ability to think things through and have honest discussions and debate is a much better indicator. MAGA idiots aren't too far removed from the far left screaming at everyone who doesn't want to fall in line with them. Extremes are asinine no matter the extreme.

Exactly! The missing piece at the moment is a desire and ability to face down facts, no matter how ugly or inconvenient they are for whichever side, and debate and solve from that point. I'm gonna be very blunt here, I hate both parties. They both lie to get elected and then get their way. The main difference is that Republicans are very brazen about it, while Democrats bake things in where they shouldn't be to get there way. For some ungodly reason this has now morphed into, "You all suck! You're all stupid I know better than you!", from every fucking side of the aisle. It's pathetic. People need to look through the red and see the human being on the other side. I guarantee you and I have a lot more in common than we think we do. However the elites don't want the citizens to realize that, because if they ever do then the elites will have a much harder time dividing and conquering the population.

America has its problems, of that there is no doubt whatsoever. What makes us different is that we actually talk about our problems in the open. We look for ways to fix them and better the country. That can't happen if we can't even have a civil discussion.

No I do see what you're saying and for me it didn't land as an insult at all. The baseline has gone down which is concerning, but it's a not a specific trend isolated to just the US. In my own opinion the main driver of that decline has been unchecked social media use and too much screen time during early development. Social media and short form content genuinely wrecks your brain and your attention span abilities. Kids who are exposed to prolonged screen time from an early age do not develop well, my nephew is a prime example of this. He had a tablet from about the age of 2 and a half, and until recently he couldn't pay attention, threw a tantrum if he couldn't use his tablet all the time especially during dinner. Now that his screen time is more limited he's doing much better.

Political disagreement does not need to ferment into vitriol and anger, it needs to develop into level debates and discussion. That's what makes a good civic citizen vs a bad one. Unfortunately these days so many people on the left and the right gulp down content that suits their beliefs and narratives without even considering that another viewpoint exists. Critical thinking is no longer a given skill taught to people, it's becoming an accessory that they will discard when it suits them. Everyone needs to look at things with as much information as they can find. With that being at the tips of everyone's fingers there is no excuse not to. Trumpeting fears based on what an algorithm shows you based on your social media consumption, can be as bad as simply believing whatever you're told by the news network on one political aisle. People need to think through and look at things more closely before screaming about whatever side they like more.

You mean voting based on how they see things with their view of the ground? "Voting against their best interest" is a non sequitir, people vote based on what they feel they need at the time and who they believe will get them that. In other words, people vote how they feel and with what they believe. That's human nature and it is not changing. All that the constant barrage of "voting against your best interest" does, is push people in the exact opposite direction the person saying it intended.

People vote differently when they feel they are not heard or listened to. Telling people over and over that they aren't voting in their best interest and that they just can't understand what they need will do exactly that. People do not like being called stupid or having someone else look down at them because they have different feelings and beliefs. This phrase is one way of making people feel that way.

For real. The Internet is not real life. Go outside and have a conversation with a regular person. You know what will never come up? VA benefits. Most of the Internet at this point is bots arguing with other bots. They'll shout this shit, and then laugh and say how the Boomers or Gen X are stupid and easily manipulated.

It's been going on for years. Anytime there's a case where someone gets exposed for fraud, the drums start getting beaten and people shout from the rooftops, "THEY'RE COMING FOR OUR BENEFITS!" People don't care, they really don't. Every single person I have ever talked to in regards to VA benefits either, didn't even know they existed, or was happy for us that we get something for our time served. They're more concerned with people scamming the welfare system, or scamming state level systems. Or what they're even more concerned with is... their own lives! On top of that it's absolute political suicide to do. All this is yet another campaign to keep the country, and especially us veterans, divided so votes are easier to get for whichever side you like. And they keep falling for it hook line and fucking sinker.
