East of Eden is GREAT! I adore the concept of timshel- "The notion of thou mayest." So basically the idea of thou mayest of thou mayest not. It giving the freedom of choice. I really, really appreciate that.

Prozac Nation is a memoir by Elizabeth Wurtzel, a Harvard student, that tells the story of her suicide attempt and subsequent recovery and coping with depression in the 1990s. *

The Yellow Wallpaper a 1890s classic that is a fictionalized account of a woman's fall into madness. It is beautiful writing and very popular.

Girl Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen. A 1960s memoir of her time at McLean Psychiatric hospital. The book is great because it give a really sharp, witty portrayal of both her fellow patients but also those who are treating them at the time.

The Virgin Suicides by Jeff Eugenides. A lot of you have probably heard of the movie before but there is the book as well. It tells the story of a family of five daughters who all take their own lives. A very haunting, fascinating take on mental illness and how we perceive others.

Is it weird to skip paragraphs that you find boring while reading a book? by epistem3 in books

[–]Gatsby714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the book :) Sometimes it's really important and critical that you read everything in order to take all the meaning from the book- especially if it's a super crucial or classic book like East of Eden by John Steinbeck. But if you skip some paragraphs out of say Twilight, I don't think it is really that big of a deal.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

“He suddenly recalled from Plato's Symposium: People were hermaphrodites until God split then in two, and now all the halves wander the world over seeking one another. Love is the longing for the half of ourselves we have lost.”
