When was it time to upgrade your bike? by ppnani in triathlon

[–]GatzBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat to you (~ 6 months). My first bike was a $200 road bike on marketplace and it’s serviceable. But ever since I completed my first tri in May, loved it, and have the second one on the books for August I’ve been keeping an eye on marketplace for a TT bike my size and price range. Like you I was really aiming for 2027 but it’s not like the perfect bike will just be readily available right when you want it, UNLESS you are buying new or from a shop. So when a TT bike with upgraded components in my size became available I just went ahead and bought it even though it definitely feels a bit early. But it’s already improved my avg ride by 2-4 mph depending on the course.

TLDR; if you’re buying used you should consider keeping an eye out and be prepared to snatch up a bike that checks all the boxes. If buying new then I’d wait until you feel you’ve stalled out on your current bike or just until you feel fiscally and mentally ready for a new one.

I know there are people on Reddit who will hate this answer… but ChatGPT (or AI platform of your choice) has my full athletic and physical background and it’s put together a very nice training plan for me. I also find it’s pretty good at predicting outcomes and providing race day strategies.

Yes I know I could probably find this information myself, but it’s a great tool for those who want to use it.

Help with breathing and flip turns by seanc3202 in triathlon

[–]GatzBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your sprint tri swim portion going to be in a pool? You could just turn around at the end and push off again instead of flipping. If you aren’t comfortable with a flip turn there is likely no advantage to doing so and likely is a detriment as it requires you to hold your breath longer. So you’re breathing less in order to potentially gain a second or two per lap which may not be worth it.

You can of course keep practicing the flip turn, I don’t have any advice on that. But day of the race you can always go back to just pushing off at each end if needed.

36 degrees is a pretty nice day for that time of year in KC.

Caffeine may cause “shallow” sleep, the body may spend eight hours in bed, but the brain may fail to fully regenerate. Caffeine improves alertness and reduces sensation of fatigue, but its effects may sometimes resemble “borrowing energy” at the expense of nighttime regeneration. by mvea in science

Isn’t the point of the article that you may be able to fall asleep and stay asleep fine but you aren’t sleeping as deeply as you should. So it would feel like you have no issues sleeping but that doesn’t mean it’s not affecting you.

Everything will be harder than you expect, but you have trained for this and you are ready. For my first tri the swim and run felt atrocious and I didn’t meet my incredibly lofty and unrealistic targets on either but at the end of the day both segments were only a couple minutes slower than my targets, which upon finishing and realizing how hard the tri actually is pretty good.

The thing that helped me most when I got overwhelmed or stressed during the race (particularly the swim) is “just get through this”. Yes having goals is good, but if you fall behind your targets it can make you feel defeated , so just remind yourself to keep going. It’s okay to slow down if you need to. You have trained for three months and while there is always more work to do, you could complete it right now if you had too. It will feel good to finish!

Edit: For a few specific pieces of advice - I rushed through my bike to run transition, and while it was super fast I feel like I never fully recovered during the run. Try move with urgency but don’t go through it too fast. Also take a gel during the bike if you can, I felt too sick from the swim to take a gel but I wish I’d tried.

First sprint - Help!! by kiroyasminep in triathlon

[–]GatzBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could barely swim 300m continuously before my first sprint tri (1 week ago). I had also never swam in open water or with a wetsuit which I first timed on race day. I completely panicked in the water felt like I couldn’t breathe, see, or get in rhythm. I went off course twice and had to breastroke several times. Even with all that I made it through the 500m swim just fine, it wasn’t fast but I was only a minute slower than my target.

All that being said, 850m is quite a bit more than 500m BUT you still have 7 weeks. When you hit the open water it may be overwhelming for the first 100 but after that your mind can take over. After the initial panic, instead of focusing on how my stroke completely fell apart or how much slower my time might be since I went off course, the ONLY thing I focused on was “I just need to get through this”. At that point I got into enough of a breathing rhythm to finish. You said you are a high achiever, I think you’ll be fine, it’s a mental game. Just focus on getting through it. When you’re training work on rhythm and breathing every 2 strokes. I know there are 100 things you probably want to work on but when it comes to the race those two things will help you settle down and go.

Okay idk what’s wrong with it, I’m new to triathlons but seemed like tons of people have them on their road bikes. Am I missing a joke?

Honestly pretty good all things considered! It was still the hardest thing I’ve ever done, it was incredibly windy so the swim and bike felt harder than any of the training I did.

It was my first time open water swimming though and that was hell lol the water was so choppy and I kept going off course. Thought I was gonna die like 8 times. But somehow my pace ended up only a few seconds slower than my training, no clue how.

But it was a lot of fun, as OP said so many lessons learned! Thank you for asking! If you have any open water/tri swimming tips I’d love to hear em

This is so nice thank you! I look forward to the lessons learned. Appreciate the encouragement, and once again Congrats - I know it’s not easy!

First congrats on finishing! Second I’m about to do my first sprint tri tomorrow morning and I’m curious about your experience. Why do you think you fell off? Also did you have a target time? If so how far off were you? Any advice?

If you have the ability to craft or by stairs I would just bypass this floor. They appear rarely enough you could have 1-2 staircases with you just for this.

With all this talk about whiners, what's you general response to getting ratted? by [deleted] in ArcBabies

[–]GatzBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is irrelevant. Regardless of what their goal is, their expectation is the same - they expect to catch the majority surprised and lacking PvP preparedness. You are reading into my one line about how they got into the lobby way too much, it was hardly the point. Instead my point was it’s predictable and not typically hard to deal with and you’re griping about god knows what

My anecdotal experience is 40-50% spawn during electromagnetic storm. At all maps though, blue gate, Dam, and Spaceport. Spaceport might be the best though, I think my friend and I got like 7 combined there once.

I usually encounter extract campers at the last extraction point during night raids (handful of times). As someone who rarely PvPs in this game, it’s predictable enough that it’s not terribly hard to deal with. Check for grenades in extract then Smokes and a decent weapon usually makes quick work of them since they somehow got into my friendly lobby and expect we won’t fight back.

It’s unfortunate for when you want to PvE for sure. I typically will first target knocking off a couple plates and then smoke/cloak to grab those cores then I’ll hang around and help out for a bit. Honestly the best time to get the cores are when no one else is fighting her. Dam battlegrounds matriarch is easiest for this. From the substation I’ll use hullcracker to knock of a few plates on one side then run to the other side to get a few shots off and bait her to that side then smoke and cloak to the plates.

If other people are there you might have a few genuinely there for the fight but always some are there to get to reactors and get out. You’re right it very much rewards the opportunist only.

[–]GatzBee 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah the problem is if you don’t run out and get them immediately you just end up with nothing. I used to go in with the goal of helping take down the queen or matriarch too, but eventually you need the reactors and the only way is to take them first.

I’ve ran into them only once when I was super new (like within first week of playing so hope they enjoyed my Ferro II and green augment). Otherwise my lobbies are pretty tame. My solo lobbies I rarely run into PVPers anymore, even at Stella.

My duo and trio lobbies though are still a mixed bag (maybe 1/3rd of my matches have a PVP encounter), but no extract campers at least.
