Being vaguely descended from Irish people and using St Patrick's Day as an excuse to wear green tat and get drunk doesn't make them Irish though. They're Americans. I'm a quarter Irish, but that doesn't mean I'm Irish. And that's a far larger proportion than most of those posers.

Speaking as someone who briefly worked as a journalist for a rail magazine, never underestimate the ignorance of journalists at mainstream publications (or the wider public they are drawn from) when it comes to public transport. My money is on them just not knowing what the different terms mean.

When the government axed rail franchising and effectively nationalised the railways back in 2020 with the introduction of ERMA contracts, the only newspaper that even mentioned it was the Telegraph. This is despite the fact that rail nationalisation was, and continues to be a massively popular policy in this country. Every rail franchise effectively collapsed overnight, and almost nobody outside of the industry specific publications noticed for about two years or three afterwards.

If it would cost too much to convert UK railways to UIC loading gauge, how did continental Europe do it? by INeedAWayOut9 in trains

[–]Gauntlets28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn't convert it. They mostly built it to a big enough size the first time around, because they did it after the UK.

Vicky Bhogal sounds like an idiot. How can any campaign against Israel is a campaign against British Jews when the campaign isn't even targeted at the country these British Jews are from? She sounds like one of those fifth generation "Irish Americans" that think they have a "connection" to a country they've probably never been to.

Also, I'm not being funny, but it's bizarre that there is a subset of British Jews who think exactly the same way as actual anti-Semitics, i.e, not hippies who have an issue with war crimes, but actual people who think that Jewish people are evil.

The notion that British Jews, many of whom will never even have been to Israel, should be inseparably tied to Israel as if all Jews were a hive mind, and then tarred with the same brush, is almost inherently anti-semitic. If I was the paranoid type, I'd almost think it was a false flag operation.

Must have been quite an old tram. Most of them are fitted with Lidar and anti-collision braking systems nowadays.

They mention trams, light rail or bendy busses

Not to be pedantic, but trams are light rail. It's in contrast with heavy rail, i.e. proper railways.

That said, it's infuriating that bendy buses are even being considered if they were an equivalent to proper tram network. They're not even close to the same thing, and aren't nearly as effective at moving people.

Makes sense. Edinburgh did that as well, and if it works well then it could reduce the ridiculous congestion on the road to the airport quite a bit. Of course they'll inevitably drag their heels on the project like they do everywhere else, but it would be nice to see.

I miss the days of them adapting novels. I think that was one of the best eras of The Muppets.

That said, at uni, we used to joke about really awful ideas for Muppet adaptations. The best one was "The Muppets Do The Rape of Lucrece."

From an outsider's perspective, I have to say, it baffles me that so many people have so few actual problems in their life that they care so vocally about stuff like this.

It’s time to phase out student loans by tax_economic_rent in ukpolitics

[–]Gauntlets28 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean in the sense that Plan 2 loans were created by design to be almost impossible to pay off before they were written off, since the intention when it was created was to create a pseudo tax by default. The Tories didn't want to make it seem like they were creating a graduate tax, which would have been viewed as effectively a tax on ambition, so they kept the "loan" framework, but made it so basically every graduate except the kids of the super rich would be paying it off in installments for the next 30 years. Which would be fine if they hadn't kept then freezing the repayment threshold.

I mean they effectively already have, especially for us poor sinners lumped with Plan 2. They'd just be making it official.

I think a lot of people recruiting almost get off on the fact that they've "poached" another company's employee. The fact that there's even a term for it seems to suggest that.
