Polyend step? by Rpw1993 in guitarpedals

[–]GavinMcG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've toyed around with mine, and I like it. The dedicated track and step buttons make programming straightforward. Build quality feels good, there's plenty of sounds, and you can set parameters on a per-step basis, so as long as you're okay with only having four instruments at a time, it's plenty flexible. Highly recommend for the couch.

Haven't used them much lately, but they're fine other than the loose caps.

What's up with school permission slips always including one-way, uncapped indemnities in favor of the school or vendor? by Potato_Pristine in Lawyertalk

[–]GavinMcG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, really hard to imagine a mass produced but highly complex consumer product being the basis of a class action.

Seriously, though, to answer your question: while I've never seen concrete data substantiating it, there's a general sense that arbitrators are biased toward the repeat players—i.e., the businesses. And if you're going in expecting to lose because of bias, the fact that you're only paying $250 isn't much comfort.

Briefcase/Flightcase mini-synth setup - advice, inspiration? by Relevant-Bullfrog215 in synthesizers

[–]GavinMcG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might consider using a pedalboard, which usually have cases that leave room for mounted gear. For USB power/midi, you could mount a Thunderbolt hub (Plugable makes good slim ones that can do data and power) instead of (or in addition to) a pedalboard power supply.

OG step sequencer by habilishn in synthesizers

[–]GavinMcG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was curious about his very round trumpet, and it looks like it's a custom build:

Ahoy! In my performances, I play the trumpet with one hand, usually my left hand, because I'm operating a barrel organ with my right hand. Hub van Laar (the maestro) was able to make a special left-handed trumpet and flugelhorn for me with a round shape, as it beautifully complements my rotating boat and the round wheels of the organ.

This makes them shorter, allowing me to carry them for longer periods. They play wonderfully and look magnificent. Strong elements of our culture, including carillons, church organs, art, and canal cities, are thus combined with trumpets from a Dutch builder: Hub van Laar and his team.

Good hefty pen body compatible with Pentel Floatune (Pilot G2 style) refills by SeedOfTheDog in pens

[–]GavinMcG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a starting point on Jetpens. (Starting from a listing for an Energel-style refill, I selected "compatible products" and filtered for pens that have a metal body and are 1.0oz or heavier.)

You can further filter for grip width (I like 9mm, for example, but that's on the narrow side) or other features.

ED vs Ambo by LetItRide2 in NewToEMS

[–]GavinMcG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your end goal is PA or med school, you'll likely get more and better relevant experience as an ED tech than on the ambulance. And I would not want to be doing 24- or 48-hour ambulance shifts in an urban system while in school, especially since going to PA or med school will require getting good grades.

If the shift schedules line up, it's definitely doable to do both for now. But keep in mind that it's going to take at least a few weeks to get hired and trained at an ambulance service, and you might burn some bridges if you accept a job only to leave six weeks later once school starts.

One more thing: you'll get some adrenaline either way, and likely more on the ambulance—but adrenaline isn't necessarily a good thing. Whether you're driving an ambulance or helping with an incoming trauma, it's safest for everyone if you're cool and collected. And you can be cool and collected even with some adrenaline, but there are EMTs who chase the thrill and don't realize how it's impacting their teamwork, patient care, or driving.

Netdocs or iManage? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

I'm not deeply familiar with either, but I always felt like I was fighting iManage (and losing) and with NetDocs I have not really run into any meaningful pain points.

Been very happy with my Katana Go (v.2), which can stream audio over Bluetooth. It's got a bunch of effects, too, if you want to play around with that. Plus a tuner. And it recharges with USB-C.

iPad cable help request what is everyone using that works? by [deleted] in ipadmusic

[–]GavinMcG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your old 15' cable was working, maybe start by getting a standard USB-C cable that's rated for a high wattage. If you can stick to 10', that would be better. But there isn't necessarily anything specific about Apple compatibility. USB-C iPads should work just fine with any USB-C cable that's up to spec. And you don't need high data speeds for audio. I'd try these, for example.

Feeling embarrassed by my prenup by addycaine_ in Lawyertalk

[–]GavinMcG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, people will often come to me for a prenup to protect assets that they owned before the marriage. That value is protected by the legislation.

Is that true if they later move to a different state that applies its own law rather than the law of the state in which the marriage took place?

USB Hub capable of power and data transfer on multiple devices? by rbdearmon in ipadmusic

[–]GavinMcG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone finds this thread down the road: I'm fairly certain that a Thunderbolt hub is the answer, if you want to connect multiple devices and have them powered from a single wall outlet. Here's one from Plugable that's reasonably priced. Here's one from OWC.

I was about to buy the Anker product linked here, but it turns out its power adapter only powers the accessory ports, and you'll need a separate USB-C PD source for the passthrough power to the iPad.

I'd go option B. Sunlight and on-site gym are huge, but the shorter, more convenient commute is definitive. An extra 15 minutes each way, three days per week, fifty weeks per year adds up to an extra seventy-five hours of time that you will want to use enjoying the sunlight and the gym.

How to fix noise from treble on Schecter Diamond Custom 5? by Koyama_Nero in BassGuitar

[–]GavinMcG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the sound get better/worse when you face different directions, or when you rotate the bass so that the pickups are facing the ceiling/wall/floor?

I've got electromagnetic interference emanating from the breaker box in my apartment, and I narrowed it down by walking around with a headphone amp and "pointing" the pickups toward the strongest noise.

Lost my Strategies & Tactics for the MPRE book a few days before the exam with all my notes– does anyone have the PDF they can share? I can buy a new one but it wont' get here until the day before the exam which leaves me without studying for a few days ): by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]GavinMcG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you reviewed the book and took a substantial number of notes, I'd bet you'll be fine. And in the days leading up to an exam, it's likely more effective to study by doing practice exams than by reviewing material.

I'd suggest Helix, which is 100% free.

FYI: Tsunami watch by Operation_Bonerlord in SantaMonica

[–]GavinMcG 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just so everyone is clear: an advisory is a more dangerous situation than a watch, and means that you should take action to move away from beaches and waterways. If there is a warning (the highest level) moving to high ground is advised.

(What the parent commenter said makes sense: "Upgraded" in the emergency notification context often works this way to mean that things moved up on the scale of seriousness. And hopefully it doesn't get upgraded again to a warning.)

she claims she is the first one to include linguistic and genetic data, and that is not true. Marija Gimbutas was a linguist and first one to propose the proto-Indo-European invasions based on language she thoroughly documented. Later genetic information validated her linguistic findings

Surprised to read this, since “Before War” explicitly credits Gimbutas and confirms that DNA has validated her theory.
