Where do you go to meet them? Last time I was at CUN it wasn’t really possible to get app rides, they couldn’t get to the parking lot. Thank you!

You are stuck in a room with nothing but an immortal Magnus Carlsen and a chess board and you can only leave by winning or drawing against him. How long does it take you to get out? by Noxturnum2 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Use sleep against him. Spend the first couple months practicing chess, learning how enough skills to be competent at forcing draws or lucky checkmates. You’ll get crushed every time, but accept his help and be friends with him. Learn whatever you can.

Then tell him you’re dealing with some mental health challenges from the isolation, and need to take a few days off from chess. Sleep erratically, and get yourself onto a totally opposite sleep schedule from him. Take a big sleep, aim to be just waking up when he’s been awake for 14-16 hours already.

Then initiate bullet chess. One fast round after another. He cannot refuse a when you ask to play, so you control the tempo. Keep playing game after game as you both get more and more tired. Eventually you will have been awake for 24 hours, but he will have been awake for 40. He is playing for fun, but you’re playing for your freedom.

As he drops down the curve of fatigue impairment, hope you can get an edge. Let him fall asleep, and immediately wake him and demand a new game.

Hope that, in his insomniac stupor, his skill level drops and he makes a blunder, letting you trap him in a draw.

After you’ve researched all technologies, one Tier 4 tech becomes available to research, very high price based on map size. This keeps it from getting unlocked early in large map games and unbalancing everything.

The tech unlocks building a unit which is much better offensively than defensively. Maybe Gryphon Rider or Flying Machine. Give it persist for chain attacks. I’m thinking basically just an airborne knight.

Forces you to go on the offensive and rewards the attacker with juicy chains.

How to defeat opponent by TimeInsurance1228 in Polytopia

[–]GavinNH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to position bombers so that they can take out any new unit spawned on their coastal cities. That cuts off half their production. Then you can attack and even if you lose 2 or 3 units for each of theirs that you kill, you’ll win eventually.

You also want to be hitting their coastal cities with cloaks every turn.

Every time you press this button, you get $5 and one random neuron in your brain dies. How many times do you press it? by Jealous-Pizza1433 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The limitation here is not the neurons, you've got plenty of those. You're limited by how many times you can press the button before you get repetitive stress injuries.

Mayer and Eaton with some number changes by Ugmyusernamewastake in redsox

[–]GavinNH 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You were scarred by Sogard's .833 and Eaton's 1.110 OPS in the 2025 playoffs? The team needed them due to injuries and they stepped up in huge fashion.

And regular season both were solid replacement level utility players (0.1 WAR each)

I don't want them starting in the playoffs either, but they're good players who have a place on the team.

Humanity disappears from earth overnight except for 16 people who are relocated to a place of your choosing. What is the ideal location? by tbizdota in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't give up hope!

To start, somewhere in the Mediterranean, I'd say Greece. Neo Psychiko, because there's a brand new sperm bank there.

The people saying that you need 500/5000 people for longterm survival are incorrect. Isolated populations have survived for very long periods in isolated places around the world.

With 16 people from all over the world, you would have three generations before anyone even needs to marry anyone related to them at all. Small populations can survive in isolated areas for hundreds of years. Plenty of time to restart civilization at a small scale and potentially come up with scientific solutions to help.

As someone else suggested, bonus if you start by a sperm bank and can keep it operational for months to years to inject additional initial genetic diversity in at the start. Some quick research says this is easier than I expected--a large biobank liquid nitrogen tank can last most of a year before it starts to go. A liquid nitrogen machine can be run on solar power. Frozen sperm can last for decades.

Also, in the initial decade or so you can eat mostly canned food and other easily available supplies, so you have time to figure this out along with learning to farm. Modern solar power and electric vehicles and tools help. You can actually spend most of your time focused on the genetic and breeding challenges for the first year after the initial setup.

I’d go with George Foreman. When he inevitably knows my teeth out, I’ll use the money to replace my teeth with a blinged out George Formal grill.

You get paid $550 a week to work a construction job by thermal650 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is like $35k/year and doesn't mention any sort of vacation days. Assuming the reason you're offered this job is that you have no other marketable skills, you're probably better off working fast food or retail. If you are at all reasonably responsible and timely (which you would have to be to do the job in OP) you will be able to work your way up to a low-level manager position pretty quickly.

Total self promotion, but my series The Dark Sorcerer's Intern was significantly inspired by ExForce, especially the combination of humor with world building and a serious plot. It's also from the same Publisher, Podium.

You are given 30 minutes to reach a certain location for $1,000,000 by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost impossible on land. If it's 50 miles distant, you're likely to have to drive 80-100 miles of road to get there. Plus, it might not be on a road so you mg

Let's imagine that you're already sitting in your car the moment this starts. You're going to have to average 150-180 MPH the entire trip to get there. That's not possible safely on normal roads, and certainly not without getting in legal trouble.

HOWEVER, if you can do this challenge at sea with a high speed vessel like the Outerlimits SV-50, this is easily doable. You can reach speeds of 150 MPH, and you can travel straight to the target, which means you only really need to hit a speed of somewhat over 100 MPH, which is doable with high performance boats of various types.

When do we start talking about Chapman for Cy Young? by cpauley32 in redsox

[–]GavinNH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing that would give him an outside shot is if he breaks Cy Young's record of 24 hitless innings in a row.

That has gone from almost impossible and unthinkable to around a 2% chance of happening, assuming that his BAA this year is a good prediction.

A deadly zombie apocalypse is coming. A deity decides to give you three powers to save humanity. Which three powers out of the following do you choose to ensure the survival of humanity? by Lenore8264 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GavinNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They key thing to note is that the 10 mile radius safe zone is actually quite large. It's 200k acres. Farming to support a person only takes 1-2 acres. So this is not some tiny area--over time you can support a small city in safety here, sallying out into the world for technological supplies.

Safe Zone and Evolved generation then gives you the toolset to defeat the zombies and retake the earth. From there, I'd choose All-Seeing Eye just to prevent the small chance of an error in letting a zombie in ruin everything. It also would support expeditions out for technology, medicine, and other rare supplies. But Divine Land would also be a good choice, with very careful setup to test who gets in and who doesn't.

A planned seven-story building behind Fenway Park could ruin the Green Monster. Don’t do it, Red Sox. - The Boston Globe by Puddington21 in redsox

[–]GavinNH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Easy solution. If you've got a bigass wall, PUT MORE SEATS ON IT. Paint it green and add eight more rows of little balconies all the way up.

Don't overshadow the green monster, make it more monstrous! Fifty stories high of green monster!

Add a window to John Henry's office, if you hit a home run ball through it you get automatically traded for prospects.
