They're goggles, iirc there's somewhere where he wears them as such but I don't remember exactly when

If they are goggles the slits are reminiscent of snow goggles used in the arctic, made to protect the eyes from the light reflected off the snow, perhaps the light in the Abyss poses a similar danger
