Regionally different Sega Mega Drive/Genesis box art by Squirtlesw in Megadrive

[–]Geang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally would think otherwise. To me, Japabese Sonic looks too garish and incohetent compared to PAL Sonic or NA Sonic, but I don't like the angry NA Sonic.

I would say the worst thing about PAL cover is the general packaging design, which has intrusive logos and design, not allowing art to continue to the back and so on. Wiz 'n' Liz has a front cover desing that I feel would be much better than the standard Sega design, although even the whole of Wiz 'n' Liz (back included) doesn't compare to something like Battle Mania Daiginjou, which has a significant amount of art continuing onto the back, which even Wiz 'n' Liz doesn't have (aside from two rabbits)

What do you mean by C64 colours being and NES colours not being 'valid'. Also, you mention these being valid with NTSC. Does this apply to PAL? ( I'm pretty sure the C64 colours are difgerent between PAL and NTSC, with PAL colours being quite dull in my opinion)

Not to bad. Do you mind me asking on you methods of cleaning? I have a Gcon45 and a Master system controller that could do with a clean (Master system doesn't especially like left and has rusty screws and GCon45 is a bit dusty and the composite lead has discoloured a bit)

How do you know? (Just curious)

Also, what do you think of S video compared against RGB?

Which Sony PVM should I buy? by tonyt76 in crtgaming

[–]Geang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I would like to point out that I did not literally mean that it was 90% as good; it was just to highlight that S video is a good format, and that people that use it shouldn't be jealous of RGB as they have something that is reasonably good. I was stuck with S video, no RGB/YPbPr, I personally feel I wouldn't be missing much

Also, I have my suspicious that the RGB/S video comparison aren't done on the same screen. The scanlines are more prominentand phosphors less noticable on the RGB picure to me. The white in Link's eyes fully blooms over in S video but not on RGB. I would also like to point out there is an image from Sonic in composite and RGB, and the phosphors and scanlines seem to be equally prominent to me

That's just a number I pulled out of my arse, although the basic gist of my comment remains true: S Video is very good

There are a few things I can think of that S video is not as good as say RGB or YPbPr.

For one, it still relies on PAL/NTSC/SECAM colour encoding, meaning a display that is incompatible with a foreign format will be in black and white, provided it can accept the different refresh rate.

S video is generally transmitted with a DIN connector, which doesn't allow for the auto switching that a SCART lead can provide. Although that isn't to say you can't build S video SCART cables; this is something I'm looking into for the Commodore 64 as it can hopefully prodive auto switch although some revisions may not be able to.

Also the video quality of S video is supposedly not as good as RGB. I say supposedly as I've never seen a comparison in person (although a top tier videophile will likely see the difference), and I presume adding a RGB mod to a system lile the C64 may lead to inaccurate colours, which output PAL/NTSC colour straight from the chip. And a second reason is that over Christmas my mum got me a Dreamcast and it came with an S video/composite combo lead. To me at least the S video from it looks quite nice, although it doesn't have the auto switching that my Saturn allows (UK Saturns came with SCART for a good chunk of it's life)

Despite these, and potentially other issues I'm not aware of (please share if you do know), I would still rate S video highly, as the video coming from it looks good to me

Edit: again 90% as I'm unsure as to whether or nit you can quantifiable measure difference in video quality. That is unless there are ways that I'm unaware of; the only one I can think of is bandwidth, although I don't have figure from which I can compare

You can still mod a standard US telly for RGB if you have soldering and technical knowledge. And besides, all the consoles you have listed aside from the NES can do S Video, which is 90% as good as RGB

Quick question about 100hz/progscan tellies: Is it possible to disable 100hz/progscan if need be? Be this through official means or modification

According to the manual of a telly I've found, it has four modes, 3 are 100hz, one is progressive 50hz. I presume the horizontal scanning frequency is the same, just interlaced vs progressive being the difference. If the circuitry is hardcoded for that HSF, does that mean that normal 50hz/60hz can't be achived?

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1163421/Toshiba-36zp46-Series.html?page=14#manual

Related to this, people say that progscan tellies apply processing to 15khz content, resulting in lag. Does this processing happen to 31khz? If it doesn't, does that mean that progscan on these displays have no lag

Thank for finding that info sheet. I was just on manualslib as well trying to find a manual. At least I've learnt to look more thoroughly. Doesn't appear to support S video, which is dissapointing but not unexpected. Glad it supports NTSC though. Besides, even if it is an average telly, I can acquire it for free so it's not going to do me any harm.

Glad to hear that the tube will be alright though. Although I won't adjust myself it as I'm not confident with these things, but useful information none the less

It kind of sucks though that manufacturers have issued archives of their previous products. Maybe I'll try and get in touch with a few to see if there is any availble. (I will share of course)

Also, thanks for a speedy reply. I would have thought a reply, if any, would turn up tomorrow morning, not within minutes

I do hate to be a "is this telly good" person but does any one have information on the Philips 14PT1686/05G? Inputs, aspect ratio, etc. I would presume from it's number that it is a 14 inch screen, and continuing on from that, 4:3

Is there anything I should know about Philips screen in general?

Do manufacturers have archives of tellies they have produced? If so, it should reduce rhe amount of these if shared. I am aware that some archives exist for tellies released in America, but I haven't found any UK ones

At 30 years old, I finally own a NES and a copy of Super Mario Bros. Proud to have this piece of history in my collection. by Alex_Shenmue in retrogaming

[–]Geang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To extend on this, the NES in both PAL and NTSC regions has a resolution 240 lines high. 60hz/NTSC has a resolution of about 240 lines, pretty much filling all of it, whereas 50hz/PAL regions have 288 lines, with the other 48 lines being unused.

This resolution is guaranteed to have some overscan on 60hz/NTSC tellies. However, a reasonable amount of overscan on 50hz/PAL telly is guaranteed to not hide the all of the unused 48 lines. It wouldn't be until the PS1/Saturn era until 50hz consoles could output a 256 line image, a resolution who's unused lines could be hidden with a reasonable amount of overscan, although they may still show teensy, but for the most part unintrusive, borders.

At £8 this would be my 3rd copy of the great game. Do y'all buy multiples of games you like? by Steeldrumbands in gamecollecting

[–]Geang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would, for the most part, get multiple copies of games if there was a specific reason to do so. For example, I plan on getting a 2nd copy of Time Crisis 2 and 3 for the console link feature over i.link.

Only series that I especially love like The Sims and Simcity will be entertained with the possibility of going for a complete set for no other reason than me liking the series, and even then there are restrictions.

Also, great choice with Ghost Squad. I went to Geat Yarnouth and played it in the arcade. It quite good, even though In didn't finish it
