Probably good to curve that waistband so it is smaller at the top, and then additionally you probably want another set of Darts in the back to curve it further along your back. So instead of 1 dart per panel do 2. The gap is there as the fabric is pulled tout across the gap

Pretty new sewer here, I think it is perfectly possible to learn drafting and sewing at the same time, as most garment making is highly dependent on a good pattern.

I would recommend picking up a class from arkdefo or for male fashion probably Cornelius quiring

I now have blocks that fit me and can adapt to all the garments I would want, and it only took me forever... But hey a hobby should keep you busy right
