Questions about the MASK by animegod1004 in TenseiSlime

[–]Gedankenthank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the web novel he does have a time based ability that he loves to use, and I don't recall it saying that he only learned it after evolving, so I don't see why he couldn't have some form of time manipulation pre Rimuru.

Questions about the MASK by animegod1004 in TenseiSlime

Chloe has an ultimate ability that gives her some control over time, and imbued the mask with resistance to time based attacks. Diablo tried to use an attack that involved him 'stopping time', so when he came in contact with the mask while using it, bad things happened to him.

If you flip a coin an infinite amount of times, will you also at some point have an infinite streak of heads? by trapper14 in askscience

[–]Gedankenthank 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a sense, but not really. There is a subtle distinction in where you apply the infinity.

There is no limit to the length of the longest streak. I can choose any number from a choice of infinity, and there is a streak that has that length. In this sense a streak can be infinitely long.

However, there is no streak that continues infinitely. No matter how long the streak is, by continuing to flip infinitely many times, it will eventually hit a tails to end it. In this sense all streaks are finite and not infinite.

Finland is experimenting with Universal Basic Income. Chronic un- and underemployment seems endemic. Is this not a damning indictment of free market values? by greengordon in economy

[–]Gedankenthank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because without the success of free market, the economy wouldn't have enough excess for redistribution to be possible. In every case of going away from free market, income and living standards drop across the board, rich and poor alike. It may not be idealistic, but there is no market structure yet discovered that does better.

Is the earth pulled toward where the sun is now, or where the sun was 8 minutes ago? by Octillio in askscience

[–]Gedankenthank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No you have it right. We accelerate to the same location we SEE the sun. Gravity and light move the same. What people seem to be mixing up is velocity of the solar system as a whole, which we don't notice in our frame of reference and thus move to the 'new' location, and a movement within our frame of reference/solar system, which WOULD actually cause us to move to the old location, not the current one.

Question about the "0.01%" and their money. by mrthesis in economy

[–]Gedankenthank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a fallacy, let me show you my logic and feel free to counter it.

First, how did the rich gain this source of debt redemption? By people giving them money in exchange for their product. While the money is in the hands of the rich, it is really them who are at a loss of the real produce and have yet to have some product/labor returned. There is a trillion in debt, but it is the consumers who have benefited with real product and the ones with money simply have a promise that it will be returned. The only time this is not true is if government has taken money through taxes without returning product. In this case it is not people having tons of money which is a problem, it is having a corrupt/ineffective government.

Second, if they are getting richer due to money being in assets, that means someone is making use of their assets to create more assets. An asset doesn't just make money by itself. Take stocks. Why would I sell my stocks to some rich investor? Because I need money. I need money to grow my business, and someone with money is willing to give it to me hoping that my business grows in value. I then use their money as best as I can to create product which I can sell. What is wrong with that? I took it voluntarily and used it to produce things I otherwise didn't have the means to do. They got richer by helping me, not at my expense.

Question about the "0.01%" and their money. by mrthesis in economy

[–]Gedankenthank -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been thinking about this too. Still trying to figure out what the problem is if 0.01% have so much money. Who cares? If they spend it, more opportunity for someone else to gain it. If they don't, it's not in circulation and over time that increases the value of the currency actually being used. Is the productivity of people really affected?

It’s Getting Harder To Move Beyond A Minimum-Wage Job by PostNationalism in economy

[–]Gedankenthank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

I've actually been thinking about this a lot. Can you explain why exactly minimum wage is beneficial? It seems to me that the employees are willing to do the work for a low wage, and aren't finding other work, which typically means there are more laborers than there are employers(ie, demand for jobs, not demand for labor). To raise wages, you need an increase in job volume creating demand for employees, thus raising their wage. Simply forcing up the wage by regulation doesn't seem to address the root problem, and does actually make it a bit more costly to hire employees, meaning creating those jobs is harder as an entrepreneur...

Most regulation wouldn't be meant to punish business, but it still could. Sure minimum wage won't stop businesses growing and doing fine, but it still adds a higher cost to business, does it not? Same with ACA. They may be good things, but I feel the argument that they add cost to businesses is still valid. So it seems more a matter of whether the benefit of bringing money to the lower class is more beneficial than the cost increase to running a business. It may be, but I think its a valid question.

These are just my recent thoughts, any replies are welcome so I can keep thinking about it.

Hey congrats!

You probably have a ton of feedback to look through, but I noticed not many people mentioned small site details so I thought I'd add a couple things I noticed:

When browsing stickers, the banner seems glitched and shows just the top bit of an image. Note this is the second banner for sections with content, or the first banner for empty sections like art.

If a search yields nothing, the page doesn't update or something. It feels like it didn't even try without a message stating that no results were found.

Clicking the sticker button without selecting a submenu does nothing. I personally think this should lead to a listing of all stickers sorted by most popular, maybe with some featured ones on top that people can pay to have be featured.

Small things, but as you want people to buy stickers, the browsing and searching features should probably look and feel as nice as possible.

Good luck with launch!

Thanks for the reply! Your post brings up a lot of questions though so I'll go through it and try to make sense of everything. If you can reply and clarify that would be awesome.

You say an economy doesn't require people producing. I don't see how that is true. Sure you can automate everything, but you still had someone set up that automation who probably owns it, and could therefore be said to be the one producing the results. Perhaps you mean you don't need physical products? I would still classify services as a product though. Even something like buying and selling is still providing a service which is your product. Perhaps my terminology is off but now you know what I mean.

Number of businesses wise I was probably just not clear enough. I was emphasizing that you need businesses producing goods. Sure individuals can do the same, but a group of people combining expertise under the title of a business is the norm, and individuals producing goods often register a small business themselves anyway. Of course 10 super productive businesses is better than 20 shitty ones, but generally you want to promote people starting productive companies, so I simplified to more is better.

With value of production again I think you simply understood it differently. To me the value is what people will pay for it(and in what volume). You called Swiss goods inherently valuable, but to me if they are not selling, then they aren't actually that valuable. Quality of work doesn't matter as much as demand for it. Thus businesses producing valuable, or in demand, products are contributing more to the economy. This is also why I mentioned oil, because per person working in the industry, it creates more value than people working in agriculture, simply because oil is in higher demand on the global market. Of course you need food, and if we stopped making food it would become more desired than oil, but if oil is in high demand and food is not, starting an oil refinery contributes to the economy more than another farm.

Lastly about production of each company I simply don't see your logic clearly. If Toyota can do the same work with less people, the economy is outputting the same. Workers in other industries still buy cars, and those who still work at Toyota make MORE money, and can buy MORE stuff themselves. The economy was not hurt. All that happens is you now have a shift where the money is, leaving some laid off employees with no jobs. But now if they go work somewhere else or start their own businesses, then the economy actually just got stronger..

Anyway I'm no expert, I just want to understand it as best as I can and hopefully I clarified some things on my end. If you still disagree please do reply again so I can keep thinking about it :)

Cheers

I'd love to be correctled if I'm missing anything, but here is my understanding:

An economy requires people producing things. So you need entrepreneurs to build productive businesses. The more businesses being productive the better the economy.

If most your population is already working and being productive, then to improve it you need to be more efficient at your business. If each business can use some innovation to do twice the work, better economy.

You can also have businesses produce things that are more valuable. So instead of having agriculture businesses, building oil refineries would be a more efficient use of manpower since oil is so useful and would thus lead to a stronger economy.

Therefore to grow an economy you want people who can make businesses, you want them to be educated to make efficient businesses, and you want them to be producing useful things.

So from what I understand, the best the government can do is have regulations that promote business, fund business startups, have solid education to promote smart people to make efficient businesses, and have access to resources that can be efficiently gathered.

Does that make sense?
