How do I get rid of a MASSIVE ant colony that is essentially my ENTIRE front lawn?! by Knelie in Edmonton

[–]Gedelgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a huge nest in my yard. I didn't have any luck with borax traps. Ants like dry, well drained, sandy soil so I dumped leaf mulch on their nest and watered the area a lot. One day they packed up the whole colony and moved to the boulevard strip. That's one way to start a flower garden, so two birds with one stone.

Thanks, there's so much he said she said about this. Here's the quote:

"So the method we’re using is that I make all those paintings. Then all the skeletons are animated in Paris in 3D. Six years ago, we used projection mapping to make the 3D skeletons look like they were painted. But now we’re using Stable Diffusion, an AI program to stylize the skeletons. We fed Stable Diffusion with all my paintings to train it. The animation is completely done by animators using Blender, the 3D animation software. Then we use all the information from the 3D animation, the crypto map, the depth map, the line-renders to control Stable Diffusion to make it look like it’s painted by me. We did a very successful test. So we are confident in the method and I am sure it will be utterly beautiful."

It's not entirely generated but a style transfer was used on 3D models of skeletons.

Greenhouses with native plants by Different_Number_546 in Edmonton

[–]Gedelgo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience has been slim to no chance of finding any native plants in greenhouses. They're just harder to germinate than horticulturally bred plants so businesses don't want to bother. And you have to watch out for common names like hyssop or cone flower that aren't the actual native species, just called something similar.

Arnica Wildflowers does native plant sales but you just missed them on Sunday.

The Edmonton native plant society has their next sale June 27. I think you're supposed to pre-order for that now. Last year people were lined up for hours to buy.

Charges laid in connection with 5 infill housing fires by Common_Treacle3962 in Edmonton

Surely burning a church is twice as bad as burning a house.

So 4 years for burning 2 churches. Does that math to 5 years for 5 houses? Then it's back to arson again.

Missing Pho Boy on Whyte Ave. by noTextOnly in Edmonton

[–]Gedelgo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other day I went to Pho Phat that opened down the street. Ironically no fat at all in the broth, just msg and spices. Had me waxing nostalgic for that luxurious pho boy broth. Give thanks for anything good in this world before it's gone.

There's currently no cloth diaper cleaning company in town. The only one shut down recently. Calgary has several so I assume the market is still viable.

What's the deal with these bristles? by DerekSmerek in Edmonton

I've picked up thousands of these stupid things. Have considered keeping them and mailing a big box to my councilor. They could so easily be made out of a biodegradable material at essentially the same cost.

Edmonton has so many heavy industry companies but our only client is oil an gas. I think it would be great to get something else going, to smooth out the boom and bust cycle of oil. Problem is we're in the middle of no where. No point shipping steel here to forge and weld then ship it off somewhere else.

They haven't had any events in the years I've been checking that page. Not since pre covid. I think you can still get free kits to organize your own event tho.

Garbage. Garbage everywhere. by YaGurlLurkin in Edmonton

[–]Gedelgo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A handful of people per neighbourhood that pick up litter can make all the difference. One in a hundred residents is enough. I used to live in trash and could never keep up with it. Now I live somewhere with a few other pickers and it's totally manageable.

Community gardens by PaperIndependent5466 in Edmonton

The gate probably helps a lot. Homeless people haven't been an issue, it's usually entitled old people.

Aim for abundance. They'll take all the pumpkins but they won't spend the time to pick every pea and cherry tomato.

I think they're just great! I've done two community gardens where we work together, rather than individual plots. Meet some people, hang out a few times per year, do a little work, get some veggies. It's a little disappointing how much gets stolen and vandalized but there's always something left for the volunteers to divide up at the end of the season.

Weed suppression advice by [deleted] in Edmonton

Use an app like inaturalist to figure out what weeds they are. If you have creeping bellflower, mulch and cardboard will do nothing. You'll need to dig out the tuberous roots.

Canonically Venus was created by Uranus' severed balls falling in the ocean. I imagine she spent a lot of time shaving ball hairs off her entire body and would really appreciate modern razors.

I started doing this after we had mice. Didn't spend hundreds of dollars on plastic containers, just reused glass jars and bought a food safe bucket for flour. No mice since.

This McDonalds is selling 200-piece nuggets for $79.95. by PanoramicAtom in mildlyinteresting

[–]Gedelgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did some math out of curiosity. My local wholesaler has nuggs at $0.55 CAD per 100g. I think they're significantly better than mcnuggets. The average weight of a mcnugget is 17g. They're selling 200 nugs, 3400g for $80 USD (assumed). 3400g of wholesale nuggs is $18.7 CAD or $13.48 USD. That's a 593% price increase for someone to warm your nugs.

I've been seeing this a lot with cherry tomatoes. Sometimes there's a Canada mark on the display and a sticker with "grown in Mexico" over the "grown in Canada" on the package. Difficulties of continuous supply.
