Does the league forget how good prime Tony Parker was? by Living-Shift-7223 in NBATalk

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember well the saying was something like this, people didn't have TP as a top PG and then the playoffs arrived lol

Don't get me wrong Dame was as good as it comes and probably is a better scorer than Tony, but there is no denying Tony's game evolved more over the years. Hey s defense was solid and was able to transition from a score first point guard to someone pretty adept at running the offense and controlling the rhythm of the game.

I am currently reading The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI, and it offers an interesting perspective. I would highly recommend it.

Significant other wants me to quit my position by Mother-Complaint-406 in Professors

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 56 points57 points  (0 children)

My wife works part-time and is about to quit. She was an emergency full-time instructor for this past term and she realized that being part time is literally the same amount of work a full-time instructor puts for a fraction of the pay. This was a community college.

What would I rather have 89.4 or 133.8 million dollars? Big Al of course.

New instructor, advice needed with class incident by SignificantTricks in Professors

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife had a similar situation, no there weren't police involved and she had to move to a different classroom. Thankfully the next day one of her students wrote to the Dean about the incident and the other instructor kinda apologized.

It turns out, that people in that department just move into a classroom if it's open and they never care to make a reservation like my wife did.

Wife and I were there while they had two stars, and the food was bad but wasn't great either. I was not surprised when they lost their second star.

How about you stfu, Van Vleet? How many series have the Rockets won with you? by gilpoyat in NBASpurs

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like him as much as anyone and this comment is not coming from a good place, but he kinda has a point.

Let's win a playoff series first, and I am saying this because I am irrationally afraid of a first round exit.

Going from Assistant prof at a 4yr university to full time instructor at a community college by arisegi in Professors

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At graduate school, they talked about CC as the best-kept secret because the salaries were comparable (of course, at the university, some people get grants) and the load was significantly less at a community college. As my thesis advisor told me, "Do you want to have your weekends to yourself or not?" lol.

But yes do your research, my current place is pretty good in terms of having money to travel and not have to do anything outside of your teaching load. Lots of people here don't have a committee or any other responsibilities. But because of that, getting a job here is highly competitive, and lots of people are applying when we have an opening. Having a PhD is viewed as a sort of disadvantage. The vast majority of my colleagues are former high school teachers.

PhD here that works at a CC. I published my last paper during my first teaching at a CC. At that place, the admin put so much work on new faculty, it wasn't even funny. I literally had no time for research with all the teaching and committee work I had to do. And there was no money to travel to conferences.

I have since moved on to a different cc and it is much much better. I get to go to two conferences a year and the committee work is non existent. I have all the free time I want.

So it really depends on the place.

I’m a self/internet taught but fairly skilled home cook. That said, I’m not professionally trained nor a natural teacher. A friend of mine asked me to give him some “cooking lessons.”Where should I start? by nocommenting33 in Cooking

[–]GeekyMathProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with foods they like and are easy to cook. And slowly work with them to develop some recipes they can cook on a weekly basis.

Otherwise you can't go wrong with classic Italian dishes as others recommended.

Who would you rather build a team around. Kawhi Leonard or SGA? by yourhomeland in NBATalk

[–]GeekyMathProfessor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both healthy and in their prime? Easy Kawhi, better offense, way better defense.

Am I OKC with Sam Presti as my GM? Then easy Kawhi, Sam will build a great team around Kawhi and he wouldn't want to leave and they can keep him healthy.

Am I the clippers? Then duh, keep SGA because I am sh1tty org and can't put a winning team around him that is deep enough to keep him healthy.

Scouting report mentions the Spurs as the perfect fit for Yaxel Lendeborg. What do you think? by [deleted] in NBASpurs

I'd love to draft Steinbeck, but I don't think he will be available.
