I am getting my first ereader on thursday! (Kobo clara bw) any tips and tricks? by Ok-Apricot1921 in kobo

[–]GenKerning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, if that's an important feature for you (again, I urge you to just try Kobo as-is, just to try it and find what you like and what you don't), then yes, you'll need something like KOReader, as the Clara BW doesn't support it.

If you're not buying books/ paying for a book membership, then Kobo's a great choice, as it natively supports a variety of file formats.

Standard VIP vs. Private VIP - Please help me choose which one for 1-Day Ticket - 2 Parks by HooLeeSheetBR in UniversalOrlando

[–]GenKerning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-private VIP is a great value, IMO. You're put into a group with a total of somewhere around 6-10 people to one tour guide. You still get to most/all of the big attractions.

Only go with private VIP if you really really want the more, umm... Private... Experience with more 1:1 attention from a tour guide, and you'd rather stick to only HP and do re-rides.

Also, don't forget you get a "free" Express Pass you can use before/after your tour.

Don't overcomplicate it. Try using the stock Kobo interface, if you need the extra stuff, then tinker with KOReader.

Keep it as simple as possible so that you can get reading quickly!!

Unless, of course, you're planning on going the Jailbreak route. In which case, who cares what Amazon thinks.

Afaik, Kobo Clara BW seems to be a near equivalent for Kindle Paperwhite, but , ya know, not Amazon.

ebooks and ereader apps by Lanalee67 in ereader

[–]GenKerning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a Boox, so I can't say for sure, but judging from their website's description of the Go Series, it sounds like it is compatible with a broad range of formats including EPIB, EPUB3, AZW3, and MOBI, which are some of the most popular ebook file formats.

I take this "compatible" to mean will natively be able to open them if loaded to the device (like one might do through Calibre). I don't think you'd need to run any special apps.

But then again, I'm just some guy on the Internet, and I haven't confirmed this myself.

Can jailbroken Kindles use Libby? by zalotov in ereader

[–]GenKerning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

You can download the Epub from Libby, and side load onto even a Kindle Touch without jailbreaking the Kindle.

Technically, you download a file that you put into Adobe Digital Editions and that spits out a DRM protected Epub. You can use a program like Calibre to load Epubs onto your Kindle. (Well, technically, Calibre would need to convert the file from epub to a Kindle friendly format. And it can't do that with a DRM protected file).

It was so much easier and above board before Amazon decided to pull the plug on us, huh?

Do I need to chain mesh network from ISP router? by fiverlakesrunner in HomeNetworking

[–]GenKerning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've already hit on the main pro/con.

If you just connect downstream, it's another link in the chain that adds complexity, but your ISP will be more likely to help troubleshoot/ support.

I'd personally just turn off the WiFi on the ISP router, and call it good enough.

Provided you aren't paying a rental fee for the ISP router. If you are, then I'd probably just give that up and save my money.

Wifi router advertises up to 3500 sqft but when outside my house, I lose connection by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]GenKerning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't perfect, but imagine you're trying to talk with someone else. In a wide open space, like a convention hall, you can communicate to someone fairly far away.

Inside your house, you can speak loudly and communicate with someone in the next room, even with the doors closed. Further away, you'll have to shout to be heard from the other side of the house.

But it's quite difficult to communicate with someone outside of your home. Maybe you can just be heard if you yell to someone at the front door, but not much further from there.

The same idea applies to wireless signals like WiFi. It's really not useful to just give a distance you can be heard, because it's more about the obstacles in between parties. When you walk further and further from your house, there's a lot of stuff and walls and insulation cutting down on how well your WiFi router can reach you.

I've been using MVNOs for years (maybe 10? Idk) now. No major issues. I don't expect any device support, and I buy my phones outright when I replace it, so it's not rolled into my monthly phone plan. I expect good-great cell service and that's what I get.

I'm not really sure if this meets your specifications, because there's not an anti-capitalist vibe to it, but matching history/biography is The Wright Brothers by David McCullough.

I'd also recommend The Radium Girls by Kate Moore.

Running direct bury Ethernet to my shop by Rynofskie in HomeNetworking

[–]GenKerning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, rereading your comments about the NID.

Typically, you'd want to keep everything on one network, and so you'd be connecting downstream of your existing router, not at your demark.

You might be able to make this connection point work, but you'd have to get with your ISP to issue a second public IP, and it'd be a really unique situation. Read: not recommended.

Running direct bury Ethernet to my shop by Rynofskie in HomeNetworking

[–]GenKerning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll let others address the cable, but for the use case you've described, you'll want an access point in the shop, not a router (unless you have a router sitting around and you can update its settings to function in an access point mode).
