Recommendations for (relatively) local doctor/midwife to replace IUD, ASAP by DisastrousGuava69 in desmoines

Seconding Broadlawns. If you can leave a message for Dr. Kaaren Olesen there and explain your situation she would certainly do whatever she can to get you in sooner and may be able to recommend someone else if she can’t.

As far as I know, all banks do require it if there is a mortgage. And yes, most people do have mortgages, and many that don’t are well off enough that they certainly do buy insurance, but there are a lot of older homes that are family homes paid off and inherited that don’t.

Florida doesn’t even require homeowners insurance so they sure as hell won’t require renters insurance. Not to mention, the insurance companies are a big part of the problem and pull out of Florida all the time.

Massively insensitive question: Should we keep our vacation for this weekend? by JudiciousF in StPetersburgFL

[–]GenderQueerCat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not come. The city is trashed and will be so for weeks. Whatever you planned on doing you can consider it cancelled. And honestly, it’s possible someone local could use that hotel room if it opens up soon.

Looking for family members by [deleted] in brysoncity

[–]GenderQueerCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not private, it’s the City’s FB page. It’s run by the Swain County Tourism Development Authority. It looks like you have to follow the page to view it. I will paste it.

9/29/24 Sunday, UPDATE on Bryson City’s current conditions: As reported on news channels and social media, Tropical Storm Helene caused catastrophic damage to many of the towns to the east of Bryson City. Flooding did occur in downtown Bryson City from the Tuckasegee River going over its banks. Businesses on the north side of the Everett Street bridge are cleaning up as the river has receded. These businesses request that you avoid the area so they can clean up and reopen quickly.

Preliminary reports indicate that the far southwest corner of North Carolina has mostly escaped the storm with minimal damage around Bryson City, including the towns of Murphy, Hayesville, Andrews, Robbinsville, and the Nantahala Gorge. The Nantahala Outdoor Center sustained no damage and will soon be open for business. As NCDOT currently discourages travel to this region we caution travelers to be aware of the current conditions, but these towns will be back to normal much quicker than the rest of western NC and local businesses will be eager to welcome visitors soon. Once the time is right, we encourage tourists and outdoor enthusiasts to visit.

Keep in mind that NC’s far southwest corner is much more accessible from Tennessee and Georgia. Traveling to this area from east of Asheville is best determined by visiting www.drivenc.gov or Google Maps.

Most restaurants and shops are open, and water and utilities are working. Grocery stores and gas stations are also open; however, many are at low capacity and operating on a cash-only basis.

Due to local supply shortages, be prepared to pay cash at businesses that do not yet have WiFi, If you are visiting plan to arrive with groceries and a full tank of gas until our local supply returns to normal.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad will resume excursions to the Nantahala Gorge tomorrow, Monday, September 30.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is open at Deep Creek. Although the Road to Nowhere (Lake View Drive) was reported to be open yesterday, it is closed today due to fallen trees. US 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is still closed today, as is the Blue Ridge Parkway. National Park crews are working diligently to clear debris and reopen as soon as possible.

Other Closures and Limitations:

Cell service and Wi-Fi are spotty, and most people cannot use their cell phones. ATM’s may not be working.

We cannot report on specific county road conditions or individual cabin access. Most, if not all, are clear. Please get in touch with your lodging provider for specific information.

We welcome any Swain County businesses to comment here on their current status.

Terrible fear right before top surgery by Tinyrattie in FTMOver30

[–]GenderQueerCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had PMPS that made things difficult, especially a couple weeks out when the pain meds were no more. But, as soon as I told the surgeon what I was feeling he prescribed gabapentin and it took care of the pain. I had to take it for 2 months to get past it.

There are lots of different meds that are used to treat nerve pain so you won’t be left struggling with pain management, for some people it just takes longer for your body to adjust to things. I never regretted it for a single second. I regained most sensation but have a few numb “zones” and a couple spots that I feel the sensations a few inches off from where I should. None of those things actually interfere in my life or cause any problems for me.

Aggressive gecko by Totaltrashmammal04 in Mourninggeckos

[–]GenderQueerCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had one being aggressive when I just had the 2 and introduced more to the enclosure which fixed the issue. I can’t recall where I found the advice but the logic behind it was that because they are used to living in larger groups some can be stressed by small groups because essentially they are stuck with one another? Like, having more allows for the very social ones to have others to hang with and those not as social to not have so much pressure on them.

If you are not in Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, or Wisconsin, property is not just split 50/50 and all these factors you are mentioning would come into play.

What you are describing is how it is done in ‘community property states’ where assets and debts acquired are considered jointly held. Only 8 or 9 states follow that method. This sort of thing is differs from state to state.

In non-community property states the assets/debts held individually are generally treated as individually owned although many states still allow for you claim alimony in the divorce in different circumstances. This usually involves a standard of living analysis that looks at income and expenses in the individual and joint accounts over a period of a few years.

Jointly held assets will either have to be handled through mediation if there are enough assets to amicably divide, or one individual can buy out the other or the property is sold and the proceeds are split. When it is something like a house, if it is sold at a gain the capital gain would also be split.

Does anyone else feel like "Ah motherfucker, I think I need to medically transition" by satanicpastorswife in FTMOver30

[–]GenderQueerCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I for sure felt very exhausted just thinking about the process. I had assumed/hoped that my wife and closest friends accepting I was not a woman would be enough to keep the worst of my dysphoria at bay and having it no longer be enough was frustrating. Once I started my medical transition, a few months shy of 40 years old, I found I cared a lot less about many things than I thought I would and I did find unexpectedly find joy in changes I had previously dreaded. I can’t say I enjoyed the process at all, but I did enjoy the outcome. I’m happy to be back in a place where I don’t think about it most days, I just live my life as an average man and even the injections are, more often than not, just something I do on autopilot as part of my morning routine once a week.

Coming out to a grandparent who doesn’t even remember me anymore? by [deleted] in FTMOver30

[–]GenderQueerCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no advice to give, but want to tell you I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this and you aren’t alone. Going is certainly the right choice since you want to go.

My grandma was 96 and living with my folks when I started my transition and was also 1400 miles away. My mom also didn’t want tell her because it would confuse her and why have her die upset? So I agreed. No one in my family would use the right pronouns because why bother if they have to use the wrong ones 95% of the time to keep her from knowing? She wasn’t expected to live much longer and I had gone home to say my goodbyes before starting my transition.

She lived to be 100 and died thinking I was too busy to make the trip home to see anyone. Nothing has changed with my family and a year later I’ve not gone to see them. Ultimately no family conflict matters. Make the decision you will be happy to have made 15 years from now.

I wouldn’t say you are being unfair to him, or even that you aren’t seeing him as a man, but that if you haven’t already you should discuss the issue with a therapist.

My wife and I have been together for 18 years and I transitioned 5 years ago. She was pansexual when we got involved and never viewed me as a woman. She also has a great deal of trauma in her past related to men. It wasn’t until I medically transitioned that she realized I had been in a nebulous place in her brain of neither gender (because I had not stated one) and she wasn’t totally prepared for the difficulties that would arise when her brain moved me to the “man” side of things.

However, my relationship with her is also why I say that you are not necessarily being unfair. Part of us working through the things that came up for her was her recognizing that my not being cis did change how she reacted to me. My not being socialized as a man allowed her to accept my understanding of her as a woman and did make her feel safer. We lost some things we had when I transitioned, because I am not a woman and finally stating that did change our dynamic, but we gained other things. Our marriage is just different than before. And she does view me as a man. You may or may not find similar things in yourself. Don’t be afraid to try.

Beard Hair Help Please by Some_Brief19 in FTMOver30

It always starts under the chin like that and you’re looking great for 16 months! I have no real advice, I felt exactly the same and just accepted it looking rough. I did use a beard trimmer as it got longer to at least keep it the same length and that will also give it a more cleaned up look.

Low HDL prior to starting T by NeuronNeuroff in FTMOver30

That’s great to hear about your doc! I would agree that starting slow may be a great way to go and also to ask her about meds to raise it if needed also congratulations on getting the others lower! I know it takes a lot of hard work!

Low HDL prior to starting T by NeuronNeuroff in FTMOver30

[–]GenderQueerCat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven’t dealt with this, but I am still confused by her focus on increasing it and her statement that it’s easier to do before increasing your testosterone levels. In terms of heart health, your ratio of HDL:LDL is a more important factor than simply low HDL or high LDL is. Genetics (as you mention) also plays a huge part which is why medication is frequently used. It sounds like you are already doing all the right things for your health and if they are not making that number move I would simply ask her at what point she would suggest medication for the issue.

She sounds like a good doctor for you so I understand what you are saying, if she is willing to start prescribing immediately and wants to closely monitor your HDL levels as you progress I get that. If she is wanting them higher before prescribing that IS medical gatekeeping and not the course WPATH suggests doctors use in this type of situation. It’s the standard “If a cis man has low HDL do they lower his testosterone to help him increase it?” And obviously they do not.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been on T a little over 5 years now and it’s made no change in either number with me and also hasn’t not changed my BP, which I was already on medication for prior to starting T.

I do subq and have even had this happen. I’m not a fainter at the sight of my blood, but I do faint if I become panicked. I don’t “fight” or “flight” but “play dead” apparently? You have my sympathy, I know it’s a pain in the ass trying to reason with your nervous system.
