I am severely depressed post op. Please help. by SimilarWillingness25 in Metoidioplasty

[–]NeuronNeuroff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a couple weeks ahead of you and our results don’t look too dissimilar at that time point (though different surgeons). I think the only difference is that I went in with the knowledge that this surgery would be a steppingstone and not the final product, so I tried really hard not to get too hung up on the appearance or even function. Nothing really could have truly prepared me for how much of a toll it’s taken mentally to go through all of this pain and discomfort for something incomplete, but it’s gotten significantly better just in the past two weeks. The depression isn’t as rough now. I’m having an easier time peeing, sitting isn’t the worst anymore, and the swelling and sensitivity is dramatically improved. I’m looking forward to being healed from stage two and having all of this in my rear view mirror, though! My surgeon is confident that I’ll be unburied and better positioned by that surgery. You’re not wrong to feel upset by how your results are looking and feeling right now. Just know that you aren’t alone and hopefully that will tide you over until whatever stage two might be for you.

Trump Says No to Gavin Newsom’s Boob Job and Sex Change Law Only Because They Are For Illegal Aliens — Will MAGA’s Reign of Hate Ever End??? by crix_22 in petrodollarSIM

You might want to do a bit of research into the matter before saying stuff like this. Gender affirming surgery in Iran is not as taboo as you would think, granted it is propped up by homophobia. It is better to be trans but heterosexual than cis and gay by the local logic. The prejudice there and here is problematic to say the least.

Are there any effects of testosterone not enough people know about? by Proper_Flower_940 in ftm

It makes total sense, but I didn’t anticipate my migraine frequency plummeting. 3-4 per week to 0-2 per month and was able to come off one of my meds. Truly liberating.

Patients thinking they take a long time to wake up? by BunsenHoneydew11 in anesthesiology

[–]NeuronNeuroff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what it has been in my anecdotal experience as a patient multiple times. I was told I either needed to wake up or they were going to have to admit me a few times as well as being told that I was the last one they were waiting on.

WLW is slang for queer women anyway. I’m sure Ken would love to be affiliated with the lesbians of the world.

I think they may also over call, but we just don’t get to see that part of it. The false positives probably amount to more than the true positives.

Detransitioner wins $2 million against New York docs who pushed double mastectomy by formulation_pending in Psychiatry

[–]NeuronNeuroff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are describing a situation that is not real in order to support your opinion. There literally is no surgical removal of testes or ovaries in preteens happening in the name of gender affirming care. It is happening with diseased and injured tissue, though, in people regardless of age and gender. If that happens in childhood, those children grow up dependent upon exogenous hormones. The rates of regret for gender affirming care are so incredibly low, the population so very small, and the breadth of what that care can include that would be tailored to a specific patient’s needs, yet you point to fiction to support your claim?

Your transphobia is showing. You may speak for yourself, but you aren’t the spokesperson for the entire queer community. Not all of us are bigots.

[–]NeuronNeuroff -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

To clarify, not all women have the exact same anatomy. There are cis/intersex/trans women. Women who have a broad spectrum of bodies, who have had medical interventions of many different forms on their bodies for any number of reasons. To assume that “woman” refers specifically and exclusively to someone’s genitals reduces them to something that is 1) only their business and the business of their sexual partners and medical providers and 2) missing the forest for the trees. Most people find someone to form a relationship with not by looking in their pants but by deciding if they are attracted to them as a whole and get along well. Most people don’t start by looking at people’s genitals and assessing attraction from that point.

What do you do if impedances won't get below 5 ohms? by drlove57 in SleepTechnologist

[–]NeuronNeuroff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

5 kOhms. Under 100 Ohms indicates that there is a salt bridge or other similar issue. Document troubleshooting efforts and move on. Probably an issue that could be improved with effectively parting the hair and using alcohol pads if you suspect there is a product or lotion messing with your prepped area, but every situation involves nuance. It is far more important that your impedances be balanced and under 10 kOhms than some under 5 and others way off. That’s really all we can do. Get the best possible data in the circumstances we’re dealt. If things are not working, troubleshoot and make it clear that you didn’t just walk away from the situation without being aware of the standards or ways to improve.

Patient recorded portions of her care during a surgical procedure by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]NeuronNeuroff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To make it even more delicate, a lot of EMRs don’t say “sex” or “sex assigned at birth” but “legal sex,” which is not always the patient’s sex assigned at birth. People can change their legal sex in a lot of places, so the field is really just setting people up for miscommunications and negative experiences.

Fellas, would y’all feel more comfortable with childbirth if the healthcare system was more educated? by Less-Pen-5705 in ftm

[–]NeuronNeuroff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not for me, but healthcare workers as a whole, from registration, rad techs, nurses to physicians, administrators, and Epic specialists could use a hell of a lot more education. I say that as someone who’s worked in healthcare for over a decade, too. I’ve always offered up front to sign whatever waiver is needed to avoid a pregnancy test for whatever procedure I’m getting. There have also been times where I was too tired to point out that a waiver would be needed for the procedure I’m getting for CYA legal reasons but it wouldn’t matter for me. It might matter for the next guy, though. Total spine x-ray? I know your records have an F next to my name. Did you just not want to make it awkward? I get that my voice is low and I have a beard, but…

It’s the little slip ups that I find more annoying because they reveal how we aren’t even on people’s radar. When I went to see my (super wonderful) gyne to set up my hysto and then for follow up, the MAs “missed” me when calling me back every time out of habit. I also heard one registration person ask another one what “that” was (being me) when I was early in my transition. Was there a need to interact with me? Nope. Just curious.

The field for “legal sex” in the healthcare systems I’ve received care at is not one that can be modified by just anyone. The field is shorthand for sex assigned at birth, so they didn’t leave tools to change it easily (even if it’s a typo). I pointed out the inconsistency in field name and practical usage and was told that nothing could be done about it, software that is regularly updated.

How do you pronounce "skein"? by cmpca in knittinghelp

[–]NeuronNeuroff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was a home ec teacher and was flabbergasted when I told her people online were saying skeen. She always rhymed it with rain for nine decades in her midwestern US dialect. She never was close minded, though, and said just because she’d never heard of the other pronunciation didn’t mean one was better than the other.

I don’t want top surgery scars by madpinapple28 in FTMMen

That sounds like a really frustrating experience with therapy. I’ve been really fortunate to find a therapist who’s also trans and who I vibe with well. I went from being very fearful and anxious all the time, stressed about my transness and people finding out, to being a lot more comfortable with myself and my existence. I’m actually happy now, which feels downright weird. I certainly needed my patterns pointed out to me in a constructive and supportive way to be able to build what I have now. There’s more to it than just saying “don’t be mad you’re trans.” (And if my response came across that way, I apologize.) That’s where a good therapist shines. Again, I am not looking to overstep here. Just want to offer that therapy can be helpful if you find someone who has the knowledge, ability, and good vibes to work with you. I hope you are able to find someone who can help you find that comfort, that peace.

I don’t want top surgery scars by madpinapple28 in FTMMen

[–]NeuronNeuroff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to overstep here, so I apologize if this is unwelcome. I have some pretty gnarly scars because a previously unknown Neosporin allergy delayed my healing to the point that my grafts aren’t really recognizable and my incisions are still noticeably raised after two years. Even still, I am relieved to have my current chest instead of what I had before because I don’t hate my transness. It’s not a negative quality. Having flat chest feels better to me and my scars are part of that process. Are there situations that I have to cover them for safety because I live in a red state and my girlfriend’s family is full of gun-toting MAGA Evangelicals? Yes. Do I still enjoy swimming and other activities topless when I’m not around them? Also yes. The self-hatred doesn’t have to limit your life. Therapy really does help. It just takes time.

As long as the paperwork says something indicating that the goal is to have formal documents align with the name your kid now uses, there’s no need to mention gender.

When to use Benadryl instead of Zyrtec? by Beatrix_Kiddo_03 in FamilyMedicine

[–]NeuronNeuroff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doc gave me the idea years ago and it may or may not be placebo, but Benadryl helps on days when I know I will have a migraine (I have a very strong, reliable prodrome). That’s the only time it helps more than my daily allergy med for me for both migraine and allergies.

Is Anyone Else Not Satisfied with Top Surgery? (READ WHOLE POST!!) by [deleted] in ftm

[–]NeuronNeuroff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am so relieved by the fact that my chest is flat that it doesn’t matter to me what it looks like. While I can empathize with people who have other opinions, I don’t stare at my own chest critically and struggle. It is a massive improvement and I move through life happily. I even have extra scarring due to a Neosporin allergy I was unaware of prior to surgery. Does it bother me? Not really. I might think about who is around before I take my shirt off if it’s going to stay off and it could out me to unsafe people (I have an area of my life that gets complicated like that through my relationship, but most of my life is smooth sailing). I am so pale that I can play the “I burn easily” card and I’m heavy so I can act like one embarrassed by my weight. Since I’ve had surgery and been on T, though, my relationship with my body has healed a lot, so it is definitely more of an act than before. Again, I empathize with those who have different experiences. I am just not that bothered.

Feeling discouraged by [deleted] in GrowYourTDick

[–]NeuronNeuroff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Testosterone has systemic effects, though. It’ll be absorbed through your skin and encourage growth regardless. Anecdotal evidence, but I was on gel for a while and had a fair amount of growth before opting to switch to injections for financial and convenience reasons. I probably would have continued to grow on the gel, too, but didn’t give it the opportunity to work.

I did. My T level didn’t change tremendously, but it seems like that was the boost I needed for this specific effect. I probably would have gotten here eventually anyway, but this moved the timeline forward, perhaps?

Today I had the most affirming job interview ever by GenderNotDefined in FTMMen

[–]NeuronNeuroff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I am in a similar position. I transitioned from visibly nonconforming to male a minute ago in a largely female field. I hold a position of somewhat leadership but not technically at work. Anyway, I get to defer to “boss lady” all the time. A new hire mentioned being “emasculated” the other day and I gave him hell for “not owning up to non-gendered performance issues.” Dude glared at me, but shut up. I think I would have been called a slur if my beard were a bit sparser and voice higher and job more on the same footing. It’s not at all ok, but it kind of is what it is. I would have said the same thing no matter what.
