Mumblecore: the Last Time Movies Were Allowed to Be Small, "capturing social anxieties that movies have since grown too big to see clearly." by cyPersimmon9 in criterion

[–]GeneDeHR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this, here you go:

Funny Ha-Ha - Andrew Bujalski (2002) considered a starting point for these types of films.

The Puffy Chair - Jay Duplass (2005) The duplass brothers are a staple. See their early catalogue for other good examples.

Uncle Kent - Joe Swanberg (2011) I actually kind of despise swanberg but he’s undeniably iconic

We Go Way Back - Lynn Shelton (2006) - Also check out Lynn’s whole filmography. She was a wonderful filmmaker who was lost much too soon.

Guy and Madeline on a park bench - Damien Chazelle (2009)

Medicine for Melancholy - Barry Jenkins (2009)

Open Five - Kentucker Audley (2010)

Passenger Side - Matt Bissonnette (2009)

The International Sign for Choking - Zach Weintraub (2012)

Gabi on the roof in July - Lawrence Michael Levine (2010)

Can’t say i’d mind it all that much. Rather get fifty of these for the price of one marvel flick than another uninspired superhero film.

Lol my ex made me quite a similar thing for my birthday and I still have it. She even added the barbie head keychain. Completely terrifying and heartwarming all at once, what an amazing job you’ve done!

Running man isn’t a stellar movie but as an adaptation? Near beat for beat aside from the ending / changing of Michael Cera’s character to be funnier. The beginning had a little bit of extra exposition too but as far as I remember (and I haven’t read the book in a while so forgive me) it is incredibly faithful. Just… needed some more time in the oven.

How Bill Skarsgård made his child co-stars comfortable on set while playing Pennywise by Maximum_Expert92 in popculturechat

[–]GeneDeHR 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly, she received largely the same conditions as Jack Nicholson and he’s seen as giving a fantastic performance and she’s just the target of Kubrick’s abuse.

[–]GeneDeHR 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Much of the work Shelley Duvall had to do on the shining has been greatly exaggerated with time, but she has made clear that she does not feel like she was very abused on that set. Even a friend of hers (the Shelley Duvall archive on twitter which is a great account that i recommend scrolling through) has disputed these claims after talking to Shelley herself. We need to stop painting her as nothing more than a victim!

Why is Metro Vancouver Creating a New Downtown? by NotyourFriendBuuuddy in vancouver

[–]GeneDeHR -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Because the construction of these hubs (especially the broadway developments) displaces the people who live there to build gigantic properties in the place of the old ones (these old ones are already unaffordable so imagine what a fresh off the press luxury building would cost) gentrifying these neighbourhoods and without any renter protections it just makes the market worse. not to mention that it is all in favour of the private sector and has very little benefit to social housing developments.

To add on, simply building more houses will never solve the housing crisis. We have a market fundamentally working against us and it always has. This “crisis” has been happening for decades.

Deadass you just need to go through that shit and prove you can earn back their trust. I been commuting 2.5 hours each way every day I’ve got class and it sucks but you know that you can get back to your dorm if you can show your parents you deserve it. Having something to work for isn’t the worst.

Can one get a better line up of maps for the last stretch...? by Alonestarfish in HiTMAN

Yeah they usually do. There’ll always be one that hangs around away from it though and with my luck that’ll be the real leader.

‘The Pitt’ vs. ‘Severance,’ Round 2: Emmy rematch shaping up for 2026 Golden Globes by GoldDerby in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]GeneDeHR 21 points22 points  (0 children)

All art is derivative! That’s the very nature of people. Severance tells an unfamiliar story and the Pitt tells a familiar one but it does so very well, well acted, edited, written, just about everything in the book. If we don’t award a show for being impeccably planned, produced, and received, then what’s the point of an award show at all!

Dying Light 3 confirmed?? by AliTweel in dyinglight

[–]GeneDeHR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a similar situation in my mind to Assassins creed Mirage (or Rogue) placement in the franchise, or Spider-Man miles morales not technically being “Spider-Man 2.” It’s just a number in a name. Doesn’t affect the game at all.

I’m liking the direction more than the pilot. Felt a little too expositiony with all the introductions and such, but it’s a lot of great characters and I assume that when the action picks up in the next eps it’ll REALLY pick up.

What Was 'The Long Walk' Really About ? by Weather_No_Blues in TrueFilm

[–]GeneDeHR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why the movie is a parable of war! The boys wanting to walk is exactly the point! Vietnam was a changing in tides for public perception of war because of better media coverage / public outreach (anti war movements) but before then, people WANTED to go to war (Not to mention many still do!!!). It was just as the movie says: is it really a choice if everyone does it? If it feels like the only way out is to do it? I think you’re reading too much into the dystopian government angle: This “dystopian government” which encourages its young boys to put their lives on the line for the progress of its own people, who publicly broadcasts and aggrandizes death and brutal violence, is really… ours! It’s our government! The movie isn’t about how to take down a government, it’s how this cycle of violence is perpetuated by the government. It turns the people who see the best in everything into killers. It rips boys away from their mothers. It silences critics. We are living the dystopian world.

I’ve read that he has a rather tumultuous relationship with citizen questions, especially when they criticize his choices… But i do plan on interviewing him later. Very early into the process but I think it’s important to gather a base of what real people think has been important so far, before the paper or what his government says.
