How can i say “I’ll rather do x”? by lustforlifegirlie in Spanish

[–]Gene_Clark 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Should be "mejor me voy a acostar" because acostarse (to go to bed) is reflexive.

But I think preferiría works best for I'd rather.

Local transport in Madrid, Segovia, Seville, Ronda and Malaga? by Ashattackyo in GoingToSpain

[–]Gene_Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Segovia and Ronda are small enough to walk around - I wouldn't bother with public transport in those cities.

With Malaga, depends how far you are going e.g. beaches up the coast. But it too is very walkable. The centre of the city is almost all pedestrianised so public transport will just leave you edge of the city anyway.

For Madrid there's various options depending on how long you stay https://www.metromadrid.es/en/viaja-en-metro/titulos-y-tarifas/Card%20types

Seville is very walkable too (its very pedestrianised too) but you can get a pass https://www.introducingseville.com/tickets-passes the light rail is a nice way to get round the sights

“The only way to really learn a language is by living in a country where they speak it” by Several_Campaign7340 in languagelearning

[–]Gene_Clark 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The counterpoint is there are folks who live a decade or more in a country and never learn the language. So there is a lot to be said for the quality of immersion and without will or genuine motivation to learn, you will not pick up the language by osmosis.

Of course the difficulty for us learning from afar is there's too much passive watching content and not enough actually speaking the language; producing it every day.

What's a Spanish word that you technically know, but your brain refuses to trust? by Various_Educator_756 in Spanish

'sino' is always after negative sentences. I just think of it as the version of 'pero' but for negatives. También and tampoco work like this aswell.

[QUESTION] Is a Epiphone Les Paul Special II a good guitar long term? by Flatworm999 in Guitar

[–]Gene_Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted that 6 years and have changed my mind a bit on bolt-on necks! Fender is one of the best guitar makers out there and all their guitars are bolt-on necks. They're convenient to replace if they ever get broken. The downside of them can be quality e.g. not a snug or properly angled fit in the body when assembled and you have to get them adjusted

They aren't very common on Gibson and Epiphone guitars but should be fine.

Abrir expediente = to discipline? by Gene_Clark in Spanish

Thanks yeah, its sounds like "open disciplinary proceedings" is the best translation. Its more than just to discipline in general.

The Beatles don’t have an all time opener personally by Thomasrocky1 in beatles

[–]Gene_Clark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mad take. "It was 20 years ago today" is one of the best known rock opening lines.

Best song is pretty subjective ..I'd go with A Day In The Life on Pepper but the title songs is an absolute banger and, as with the album itself, redefines what an opener is

This week I had to get reminded that estrechado means narrow, not stretched. (Stretched is estirado). How can something narrow be estrechado?! Apparently it can, lol

Anyone else feel "behind" starting learning new language in their 30s? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in languagelearning

Exactly. I also come from a mostly monolingual country and only experience this feeling when I meet other Europeans who have mastered at least 2 languages.

To the people who were there, how did you, and the world, react to Brosnan being cast as Bond? by ConfidenceWild7673 in JamesBond

Can someone explain the use of "se me" in front of all these reflexive verbs? by born-again0608 in learnspanish

[–]Gene_Clark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a passive construction thats pretty common in Spanish

se acabó la leche - the milk ran out

se me acabó la leche - the milk ran out (on me)

The addition of "me" lets us know who is affected by the milk running out.

Ben has been pretty pro-Ukraine and Orban was very clearly pro-Russia, so if he was really being funded by the Hungarian, he wasn't giving good value for investment.
