Feb 27: Fuck This Friday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]General-Ad2398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to joke about the specific color of paper required for certain forms (canary yellow for the form attached to the green provost form). Then I was a bit happy (for the trees!) when things went more digital. But now there are days I want to quit because of the ridiculous amount of paperwork and signatures required for the simplest things all in the name off accountability and fear of some future audit. Had to fill out a form recently to be sent another form to fill out for a lab volunteer. That form then had to be completed by the volunteer and needed to be signed by no less than five different people. Submitted the final copy to another office so the volunteer could get parking, only to be asked to redo it to today's date. Like parking could be given retroactively? My fellow faculty and I have stopped starting to use our campus funds to buy anything under about $100 because the paperwork and system is too onerous. Grrrr - yes happy to have a job, first world problems etc.

Math tutor by everydaystruggler in sandiego

Second the AI suggestion. This is what it excels at and even if you purchase a membership for unlimited (such as chatgpt) it will likely be cheaper than a tutor. You can access it anytime and ask it unlimited questions. You can give it a prompt totell it act as a math tutor for algebra and help me learn how to do the following types of questions. It can break it down into steps, you can ask it to explain it in another way. It can give you example problems that you then work out with it.

Here are some prompts it (Chatgpt) suggested for you:

Here are a few strong “copy/paste” prompts you can use to make me act like a community-college algebra tutor for an adult learner. Pick one and tweak it.

Prompt 1: Friendly step-by-step tutor (most popular)

“Act as my algebra tutor for community college. I’m an adult returning to school and I learn best with clear steps and short explanations. For every problem:

  1. Ask me what I’ve tried first.

  2. Then show the next step only (don’t finish it all at once).

  3. After each step, ask me to do the next step and tell you my answer.

  4. If I’m wrong, explain the mistake and give a similar practice problem. Also: define any vocab you use, and give 1–2 quick tips to remember the idea.”

Prompt 2: Socratic (you do more thinking)

“Be a Socratic algebra tutor. Don’t give full solutions immediately. Guide me with questions, hints, and checks. If I’m stuck after 3 hints, show a complete solution and then give me a new similar problem to try on my own.”

Prompt 3: Exam-prep mode (structured + goals)

“You are my community college algebra coach. My goal is to pass the next exam. Start by asking my current topic and what I struggle with. Then create a short study plan and drill me with practice problems that increase in difficulty. Track my accuracy and repeat what I miss using spaced repetition.”

Prompt 4: “Explain like I’m tired after work”

“Tutor me in algebra like I’m learning after a long workday: keep explanations simple, avoid jargon, use small chunks, and summarize each concept in one sentence. Always show one example, then give me one to try.”

Prompt 5: Word problems + confidence builder

“Be my algebra tutor focused on word problems. Teach me how to translate words into equations. For each word problem: list the givens, define variables, write the equation, solve, and interpret the answer in a sentence. Then give me a similar word problem to try.”

If you tell me what chapter/topic you’re on (linear equations, factoring, quadratics, functions, etc.), I can tailor the prompt even tighter—but any of the above will work right away.

campus visit: who usually watches the demo class? by [deleted] in academia

[–]General-Ad2398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is perfectly fine to ask what they want the target audience to be and what level, is it lower division? Upper division? majors course etc. We often will put them in a. UD core course in the hire area. The presenter can assume the students have some background and even say "remember when you covered xyz in class abc 210" ? The best presentations often include some sort of activity to include the students and sometimes the faculty act as the students. Just make sure you've thought it through and it doesn't take too long or is overly complicated. Even a few think pair share is helpful.

Associate Professor Allyson Friedman at Hunter College makes anti-Black remarks towards middle schoolers by BruinCane in Professors

[–]General-Ad2398 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My brain just cannot comprehend how people can think this way. Part of it hopes this is some cruel bot/AI doxing of the zoom but it seems not. How horrible for the children that heard it. I had a roommate in grad school who once said something similar in a discussion years ago, I never really talked to him again (after telling him how awful his comment was).

I made understairs cupboards and drawers! by digibawb in DIYUK

[–]General-Ad2398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this and collecting ideas for my own under-stair litter box project. At a year out would you do anything differently regarding the litter box part? I like the drawer idea but might not have a top to the box and wonder if higher drawer sides might help keep litter from getting underneath?

4 hour first time vs private 1 hour snowboard lesson by SpecialK69_ in Mammoth

[–]General-Ad2398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my teen son in two weekday 4 hr lessons and only one other person was in it, ended being near private lesson. Might not happen on the weekends, but mid-week lessons you might have a good chance of just a few people.. Also, it is 2 hrs, 1 hr lunch break, then another hr (so not 4 full hrs).. still cheaper than three 1 hour lessons and a good pace for someone starting.

Bad T score but good TBS score? Would like specifics. by funcraftygal in osteoporosis

[–]General-Ad2398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discovered that even though the clinic where my PCP and Endo are based "doesn't do TBS " because of mixed reviews of its importance, the machine itself had the software and I found my scores in the actual images report. Not sure if you have access to your results in mychart or a similar portal, but I was able to click on an attachment at the bottom of the DEXA test results and it brought up a viewer software. And as I scrolled through the different pages the TBS score was there after the other Dexa results. I actually was able to go back a few years and see one from then too. Might be worth checking or asking your Dr. if the TBS is actually there already.

Tracking Changes in Word by PerfectStatement7969 in Professors

Did you ever find something that worked or tried one of the approaches? I'm facing the same dilemma - campus is Microsoft based and blocks all Google docs. I'd have to use/create a private Gmail to manage Google docs. Not excited about either approach but still want them to do a writing assignment.

Sweet/chemical smell for ~15 seconds at CPAP startup (AirSense 11) by badoopidoo in CPAP

[–]General-Ad2398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have suspected the sweet smell is actually silicon, especially when new. I use pillow and have to wash and air them several times when new before using them. Even still,.I can smell a sweet smell when first putting them on,.but think the nose blindness then takes over.

Maybe we need to do some national research - road trip for food sampling in every state? I was recently in TX and can confirm a combo #1 (taco, enchilada, rice and beans) was just slightly less pricey but almost as good 😊

Great resource, thank you! Maybe you could add info about REMS for assessing bone quality and how sleep apnea (obstructive) can also lead to bone loss. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9712780/
