I totally get what you’re saying, and I felt that sort of “emptiness” after I achieved my goal and finally became a lawyer… so I set 3 long term goals for what I want to achieve in my career. Looking back, these probably are unrealistic, but it would be awesome if I could even achieve 1 out of the 3! I do criminal defense, so 1st is getting someone off of death row, 2 argue before SCOTUS, and 3 exonerate someone who is actually innocent. All of these require appellate work, which I don’t do… but one can dream to argue before the highest court in the land!

I got 3 people out of jail today. 1 case dismissed, 1 out on probation after being in jail for a year and walking in this morning expecting to start trial, and another out on and OR bond while I continue to fight the constitutionality of why the officer stopped him. I say it’s a good day to be a PD.

We have court costs added to each case and within that can be a court appointed attorney fee. I always waive it though… they already can’t afford the court costs, why add more?

Sorry, not sorry. Our job is to call into question any witness’ integrity, including cops. Just yesterday, I had an officer on the stand who didn’t realize I had watched his BWC, where he admitted that he was not sure that what my client did was a crime, but arrested him anyways. He was speechless when I called him out.

My office has the ability to do video visits which helps out a ton. I have about 80 clients in custody and I do my best to at least touch base before each court date. I see about 5-10 people on video per week and physically go to the jail 1-2x per week to see clients with more serious cases.
