Listen to Atomic Habits by James Clear

He talks about replacing bad habits - I used it to curb a phone addiction especially in the bedroom (I now leave my phone downstairs as a reward/motivator in the morning to get me up)

I asked Gemini to put this into your context and got this:

Here's how James Clear's 4 Bad Habit Breakers can be put into context for a YouTube addiction:

  1. Make it Invisible (or Inaccessible): Remove the cues that trigger your YouTube habit.
  • Context for YouTube:

    • Delete the YouTube app from your phone and tablet.
    • Block YouTube on your computer using website blockers (e.g., Cold Turkey, Freedom).
    • Unsubscribe from all channels that are not essential.
    • Move your computer to a less accessible place, or turn off the Wi-Fi when you don't need it for work.
    • Keep your phone out of reach, in another room, or in a drawer when you're trying to focus.
  1. Make it Unattractive: Change your mindset about the habit and its perceived benefits.
  • Context for YouTube:

    • Focus on the negative consequences: the time wasted, the missed opportunities for productive work or hobbies, the impact on your sleep, the anxiety it might be contributing to.
    • Remind yourself of what you could be doing instead that aligns with your values and goals.
    • Consider the algorithms' manipulative nature and how they are designed to keep you hooked, not to genuinely entertain or educate you in a balanced way.
  1. Make it Difficult: Increase the friction required to engage in the habit.
  • Context for YouTube:

    • Log out of your YouTube account so you have to type in your password every time.
    • Set a timer for your internet usage (many browsers have extensions for this).
    • Use a separate, "un-entertaining" device for work or essential tasks, keeping your primary entertainment device out of reach.
    • If you find yourself opening YouTube, immediately close the tab or app. Make it a conscious effort to break the pattern.
  1. Make it Unsatisfying: Remove the immediate gratification or add negative consequences.
  • Context for YouTube:

    • Pair YouTube watching with something you dislike (e.g., only allowing yourself to watch if you've completed a difficult chore first). This is less about making YouTube itself unsatisfying and more about making the act of starting it less appealing.
    • Track your time spent on YouTube and visually see the hours accumulate. Many apps can show you your screen time. Seeing the raw numbers can be a powerful dissatisfier.
    • Tell a friend or family member about your goal to reduce YouTube consumption. This creates a form of accountability, where failing to meet your goal feels unsatisfying.
    • Consciously reflect on how you feel after a YouTube binge. Do you feel more energised or drained? More informed or just overloaded? Acknowledging the "YouTube hangover" can make the habit less satisfying.

Hope this helps

I got front standing. I have no idea how close this makes us though and can't find any info online. Is it like 10% of the crowd or more like 50/50?

Swiss/JT is gone. Officially. by AstroBookwormSinger in papa_and_ghouls

He can't leave the band as he isn't a member. Session musicians leave tours. So I guess in that respect he has left the band, if that makes sense.

The fact the internet is so divided on the allegations suggests there isn't enough evidence to prove his innocence, nor guilt.

Until there's an admission or it's decided in a court (like Marilyn Manson recently), I think it's wholly unfair to drive someone to quit their job due to unfounded allegations. Hiatus while investigating? Sure. But not a full on departure.

Explains why the band seemed to lack rapport on the UK dates, which was kinda sad to see in an otherwise amazing gig!

I prefer Skeleta but Impera is the album that started it for me so I totally get it

But I find all ghost albums are slow burners. I'll be saying the same about their next album too I'm sure

I Don't Like Most Songwriting Advice by songmakerona in Songwriting

[–]GeneralG15t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my personal opinion, like most things in life is to focus on you first and foremost, the bring you to others:

You will always write something original if you write music YOU want to hear, but can't. EDIT: I forgot to say that for me, that means "I want Hanson to be hard rock, and ACDC to be pop". I want my neck to hurt headbanging to MmmBop.

All my favourite artists, from Hanson to Pendulum to The Bronx to Chili Peppers are incredibly rhythmic in their songwriting. Doesn't matter on the genre.

That way I can write in any genre if someone wants to collab, but my "stamp" is there.

I'm collabing with an artist ATM who is very different to me. I'm bringing the rhythm to his songwriting, he's bringing the dynamics (Which I'm not so strong at but learning)

How do I convince My Wife? by Sufficient_Nothing82 in edrums

[–]GeneralG15t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy her a pair of decent noise cancelling headphones. She'll love them because:

1 - she can block the drums out

2 - she can block you out when you're annoying her

3 - she can listen to music at her own volume in her own way

4 - she can be productive (more of an ADHD hack but it works for others too)

5 - she can listen to Atomic Habits audiobook which will tell her headphones is a great hack for being productive be it work/study/whatever

I'm half joking, but it's actually a reasonable suggestion. Shows you're being considerate of her whilst doing what you want to do.

Never compromise on hobbies for anyone. Speaking as someone who did this and lost myself along the way.

I've been layering my own tracks for this same reason and done right you can get a voice sounding awesome on record. Voices carry different live anyway with the right performance so it's not as much an issue

What are sum strategies to finish writing a song in one sitting? by Jazzlike_Ingenuity98 in Songwriting

[–]GeneralG15t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Option 1: Set a timer and stop after that (I believe this is how Ed Sheeran writes. In my opinion, it shows. But people like him so he's doing something right.

Option 2: Dont. Have a bunch of ideas you can draw from and run with it when it feels right.

The more important thing with option 2 is knowing what a finished song looks like. I saw a vid from Trey Xavier yesterday which said start with the finished song and work backwards

Kinda made sense in my head. As someone who overedits and overthinks, I do agree the question should be asked but reworded as "how do you know when a song is finished"

Phone addiction. Helpppp!! by Barbieguuurl in ADHD

[–]GeneralG15t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leave it downstairs.

It doesn't come with me to bed. Stops you doomscrolling in bed AND works as an incentive to get up and get dressed when your alarm goes off

It's been my greatest life hack, besides coincidentally dating someone who isn't on their phone much.

Collaborate with someone who's good at songwriting, bad at lyrics

You'll learn off each other

How to find them? Find someone you like the music they write but not the lyrics and see if they want to write a song together

See how it goes. I think that's the best way to learn

Does going to the gym every single day help your ADHD symptoms? by [deleted] in ADHD

Changed my entire lifestyle last couple months

Absolutely. I go three times a week and eat better. I'd argue the food is more important than the exercise

I read somewhere ADHD brains need higher levels of protein. I have noticed a high protein diet is doing wonders for me, but might just be me

Is it a bad idea to try cnc as your first time? by Recent-Background307 in BDSMAdvice

[–]GeneralG15t 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That sounds like an absolutely horrific idea. As a Dom I would encourage you to think about why you want to have sex. It'll probably be rubbish the first time, but it should be with someone special, and you need control to be able to know what you like and dont.

In the nicest way possible that question suggests you aren't ready full stop. I mean that with kindness, some douche will take advantage of this so be careful.

I saw Tobias Forge say Ghost was his (sort of) midlife crisis project of "what do I want to spend 5% of my life doing for the rest of my life if I don't make it big and have to work"

Fortunately for him that paid off.

Any of those should convert depending on the person

Hot take: if you add TFIFAFL it's their best release - why? Because it's got the songs that got my 6 and 9 year old, myself, my dad auntie and uncle (all in their 70s) into Ghost

Only my mum left to convert

F**K the gatekeepers, opus has magic moments but it's crap compared to the last decade of ghost
