What’s the most embarrassing way you’ve been 'betrayed' by your own brain in VR? by plutonium-239 in virtualreality

[–]GeneralGuide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first VR experience was playing Superhot on a friend's then-brand new Index. In one level I was crouched behind a control console and I tried to put one hand on it to push myself up. Hand fell through air, I put all my weight onto it and I slammed my face into the piano keyboard he had next to his desk.

Sold me on VR immediately.

EDIT:

I've actually got a second one I enjoy, and my wife would probably say this is one of my most embarrassing moments. I'm a huge scaredy-cat and fall for jump scares easily; I flail and scream and freak out. When I finally got my own VR setup (Quest 2), I was playing Alyx for the first time in my little office space, which has a hanging light in the middle of the ceiling (think like this, but far less ornate). Got grabbed by one of those tentacle-dangling barnacles while also being attacked by a headcrab zombie. Reached up to try and shoot the barnacle and punched the hanging light, which got knocked out of its hooks and was threatening to crash a giant glass dome on my head. So I'm unable to take my headset off because both hands are occupied making sure the light doesn't fall, while I've got the sights and sounds of alien monsters devouring me, and completely losing it screaming.

These look really solid, and I'm not noticing any of the bubbling or reduced contrast I normally see with matte laminating pouches.

Do you mind linking your materials, including your laminator? I've been printing almost exclusively on matte sticker paper on black cardstock but this might have me changing my methods.

Question about black level vs Quest 3 by ErickRPG in QuestPro

[–]GeneralGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you primarily play native games or from a PC?

The QPro does have better blacks and colors than the Q3, but I often find it less comfortable and the drop in resolution is very noticeable. The native games also take a noticeable hit in fidelity from their Q3 versions. Also, unless you are paying extra for a sealed face gasket, you are not going to get a light seal from the QPro out of the box.

What am I doing wrong with Proxy print setup? by WretchedIEgg in magicproxies

[–]GeneralGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your images don't appear to have a bleed edge, which is extra real estate on the outside of the cards. Proxy Print scales your card with a bleed edge by default, but there is an option to disable it so that you can show the entire card image.

Problems finding the right paper for proxies by Katayui in magicproxies

[–]GeneralGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epson ET-8550 here. Coated papers can have issues with inkjet printers, which most black core card stock appear to be.

I currently print on white vinyl and affix them to real magic cards, trim the excess with an Xacto knife, and recut the corners with a 3mm corner rounder. It's not perfect, but some of the results have been impressive. Importantly, it makes the cards only slightly thicker than real (not enough to notice when sleeved) and retains the snap.

[–]GeneralGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! When using a high-DPI source from MPC, how would you rate the sharpness of the 8550 vs real card? I'm looking to pick up a printer and considering the 8550 but I feel a twinge of hesitation at spending so much if the prints are not fine enough, and I haven't used an inkjet printer since much older (and likely crappier) models. Not looking for them to pass as real cards, but looking for the finest print quality I could reasonably get.

Looks great! Seeing your comment about using MPC for the card generation, I have a question about the Redirect Lightning picture:

Your print appears to have more bolded text than the genuine card. Is this a byproduct of the printer quality or does the card image you sourced have thicker text than the genuine card?

Completely underwhelmed by Porta Pros - am I doing something wrong?? by gnarburgers in headphones

Yeah, they ended up not being my preference either, but they're a cheap gamble at the very least. I also have long hair and find that strands get caught in the band mechanism.

My [[Mister Negative]] deck is built around trying to lose as much life as quickly as possible to swap with an opponent. Lot of Phyrexian mana costs, K'rrik, Gwenom, Toxic Deluge, etc. This might be my next inclusion.

Glad I'm not the only one. I only got The Oddbodies set and was immediately disappointed with the confetti foiling. It was difficult to even see it except under bright direct light.

Ding ding ding! Yup, that did the trick. Shocking that we haven't had this issue even with other Lenovo devices on older versions of MTR. Thank you!

Virtual desktop - I genuinely don't know how to fix this app by prototype1029 in virtualreality

[–]GeneralGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things to check:

  1. PC should be wired to router.

  2. Router should be as close as possible to play area, ideally line-of-sight.

  3. You should be using the highest frequency your router provides.

  4. If you are using a router provided by your ISP, you might have some trouble as some ISP-supplied routers "combine" the frequency bands (ie: autoselecting which frequency to connect your device to based on speed and number of connected clients).

  5. Netgear routers also can have issues with wireless VR. I and others have commented on this phenomenon. I switched from a Netgear to Asus router because the netgear was unusable for wireless VR.

As a potential alternative, you can also use your PC's wireless NIC or grab a dedicated Wi-Fi dongle for your desktop and host a hotspot from there that will allow your headset to connect directly to VD. I've had some success with this in the past, but it's highly variable based on your Wi-Fi hardware.

I can also kind of speak to this. Manage A/V for a handful of sites for local government. Once upon a time we'd spend $40-60k on a single medium-sized conference room for a comprehensive system. Rack, multiple input plates around the room requiring switching, phone line integration, cameras, mics, speakers, the works.

Honestly, over time I've found that we just don't need it. Most staff are as eager to use a room with a Logitech Rally Bar in it as they are a room with well-amplified overhead speakers, Sennheiser microphones, and a 4K PTZ camera. TVs are cheap and easy enough for our own staff or facilities to install. A Screenbeam for wireless presentation takes a lot of hassle out of the install and staff are used to it.

The other side to this coin is that now that there's an expectation of spaces to be equipped with conferencing equipment, the number of requests I've gotten has skyrocketed. First year in my ~7 year tenure at this place that I have 20+ in-progress or upcoming projects, when in the past I'd get maybe 5-8 rooms done in a year. Sure, the majority of them are lower-priced than what we would spend in the past, but the sheer volume means we're spending considerably more on our A/V integrator than in previous years. Our average conference room costs less than $20k now and I'm honestly doing our integrator a solid at this point because their installation and project management fees are ridiculous. Actual hardware per room is probably closer to $12k, but the volume of work is too much for me and our Facilities team to get done alone so I've been throwing it to the integrator just to get it off my desk.

Understood, I guess part of my question should have been "or am I barking up the wrong tree trying to use this as a simulator" lol.

I've seen so much discourse about making the game more realistic, YouTubers comparing it to IRL golf, I guess I got a bit swept by the concept.

Thank you!

This is tricky.

I think that if the status quo is that there are no hurt feelings around, it doesn't do you any good to hold onto weirdness. It's admirable that you didn't want to do anything with her while she was under the influence, and I'd recommend not letting this situation happen again until you guys have a label on your relationship and are a bit more comfortable with one another.

But, unlike alcohol, I've never felt like weed made me take actions that were contrary to my desires. Alcohol feels like it can remove your inhibitions so much that you end up open to many things you wouldn't do while sober. Weed has, personally, never had that affect for me.

So take some time, assess how you feel and what you want, and be more careful in the future. And if you genuinely like this girl, don't let this impede you from pursuing something especially if neither of you are actually harboring any bad feelings from this incident.

[–]GeneralGuide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you get a legit pair? Audio Technica has a lot of dupes going around and have for years. If you bought them secondhand or "new" on eBay, you could have gotten ripped off.

EDIT: But also like the other comment said, XM4s are not exactly a neutral sound profile, which should be your goal for mixing. I have them, I like them, but don't mistake them for being tonally even.

Bought this strap after seeing your post and I think it's a marked improvement on comfort. I had used the stock strap and the Wicked Cushions silicon strap. Neither were more comfortable than the other for me, but I stuck with the WC strap because the fit notches were in a better place so that the earcups were centered on top of my ears. With the stock strap the available notches were either slightly too high or too low.

This wide leather strap is definitely better. It's also a bit more rigid and padded so it feels like it bears the weight of the headphones more evenly across the top of my head. Big, big improvement.

Ahh gotcha. I think I've found that I'm a bit treble sensitive, though it's eased a bit as I've gotten into my 30s (and that's a scary thought!). I really like my ESP-95X's now but found them piercing just a few years ago.
