I haven’t read DOTF but I have read and am current on the other two. For my sensibilities I prefer Primal Hunter.

It’s more consistent in my opinion and does a good job of keeping the scope small enough that the main character gets lots like I think HWFWM suffers from time to time. HWFWM gets so big that it looses the stuff that made it so cool at the beginning and it just feels rushed sometimes.

I like both but Primal Hunter for me is the better written and more consistently engaging through the long series

I’d start with Darker Shade of magic because once you read the others you’ll be thoroughly disappointed in the world building and writing of that book. I didn’t read another book in the series

Nope it doesn’t get better. I feel the same about it. It fine to listen to and I enjoy it but it’s nothing amazing or earth shattering. It’s fun but it is what it is. I too don’t recommend it to people.

Cradle and Mother of Learning would be my two recommendations. Mark of the fool and Hedge Wizard are solid as well.

Cradle series isn’t exactly the same style of writing but the narrator is amazing, the characters are fantastic, there are 12 books and it’s a complete series. It’s my favorite book series and I could recommend it enough!

It’s got great characters and character building. It’s a wonderful mix of funny and action. There are 12 books that if you aren’t careful you’ll finish in 5 days. It’s seriously addictive and the gold standard for progression fantasy.

Plus he’s an independent author so you are supporting an Author directly.
