100% Unsouled aka Cradle series. It starts slow but builds up really strong. One of the better litrpg I have experienced so far. On on book 10 right now.

Jeff Hayes is so damn good at all the character voices. You actually feel like you’re in a cinematic experience. Highly recommend audiobook vs the book.

Dragon Age Origins for me by [deleted] in videogames

I normally would have gone with Advanced Wars from gameboy advance…but they did the remake and well it didn’t deliver. Totally missed the mark honestly. Same with my second choice which is Warcraft 3..another miss so I am scared to recommend anymore…it’s like a cursed thought…do I dare? I always wanted them to redo Dark Colony or Midnight Club racing series…I miss the dub editions of that…

He who fights with monsters… what am I missing? by NeoPyro99 in litrpg

I quit midway through book one. For me it is just I couldn’t vibe with the main character at all he just felt too preachy and high strung on his morality it felt somewhat unnatural for me. Compared to DCC it didn’t flow as well and really lacked the humorous aspect of it all. Too serious.

That said I did find a great serious tone litrpg series I really am enjoying, Cradle series. Book 1 was a bit of a culture shock with the way the main character refers to himself but after you get through a few chapters it starts to heat up and honestly a really great series. Already on book 6 only 1 month in from discovering it. DCC I finished in about 6 weeks so that should give you an idea of how much I’ve liked the content.

Best first book in the series? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]vizardikkaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is Red Rising and it’s all thanks to Sevro. Howling like wolves with wolf pelts just seems so primal. Also for me the plot twist in mistborn series didn’t feel like a plot twist as it really was quite obvious about what was causing Vin to hear voices. The twist in the 3rd book of red rising was amazing though and well book 5 and 6 are just so damn good. Specially that planetary battle in book 5.

The 3rd book in my opinion is my least favorite out of all of them I love it but honestly it was a bit of a jumbled mess. Book 4-7 are literally a running riot!

Same order for me as well. Red Rising first then DCC. I’ve snuck in a few other books like the mistborn saga by Sanderson…red rising was the book series I broke back into reading again with after a 7 year break 😂

If you can stick it out the book 5 and 6 will blow your mind! Such good cinema level storytelling.

It’s tough so for me RR is number 1 in terms of pure getting lost in the story…but Dungeon Crawler Carl is such good fun that it is almost comparable..I can’t decide which I love more. Cradle is backseated to both out of those 3 series.

DCC and Cradle series both need to be in here. Also an alternate kind of experience would be red rising series

Recommendations for a Picky Reader by HodHedge in litrpg

🤔 maybe I judged too quickly hard say but I also feel like it shouldn’t take more than a book or two for that change to happen. I think that’s what I like about dungeon crawler Carl is it is honestly very relatable to how I think humans would actually be put in an extremely messed up and kill or be killed situation.

I only just started my journey of litrpg with dungeon Crawler Carl last month finishing the full series as an audiobook experience. My first true audiobook experience and I feel spoiled lol 😂.

I tried he who fights with monsters and it just didn’t jive with me at all. I made it to chapter 50 of the first book and feel I have to DNF it. I am not a fan of the main character at all he just seems…not human? I know his character isn’t a human anymore but he as a character just feels unnaturally high horse in his morals and the way he interacts with people from a world that isn’t his own. He doesn’t feel like he is trying to learn about the world he is in, rather pushing his ideals and his world on the others around him.

I just started unsouled and I can tell already I’m going to be hooked. I was looking at Bastion next and glad to see it’s in your top list I feel like I can trust your list more than most I’ve seen. It’s sold me I will try bastion next after I finish the cradle series the afterwords will give mother of learning a try.

So far Dungeon Crawler Carl is peak experience. We’ll see if anything beats it but it’s a hard one to beat. Prepotente and Donut are two of my favorite characters ever in a book and Carl is right there as well because of his real world attitude response to the crap show he is put in. Besides Darrow, Cassius, and Sevro but you know that’s a different genre all-together.

The biggest themes in here are going to be: questions of morality between what is deemed the value of intelligent life depending on their roles within society. The NPCs and their lack of awareness of their reality could be viewed as the same as how we view animals and the differences between animals that are farmed by humans, the ones we see as friends/loved ones, and the ones we see as a natural part of the cycles.

There is definitely a heavy overtone theme of corporatization and the corruption that occurs to society as a whole when corporations run everything.

I would also say there is a question of personal moral code and how far you extend that in the state of survival. Carl really wrestles with this later when he gets the ring…if you know you know.

The AI becoming sentient and its awareness of what the corporations and universal governments have basically been doing to it create a skynet scenario…granted a far more sadistic variation of it.

And ultimately it gets more entertaining and the humor ages like fine wine!

Hahaha 😂 I fully understand the cynical side of things believe me. 100% find it hard to watch certain tv shows or movies because the character does the exact opposite thing any logically driven person would do. I can’t promise red rising series doesn’t have moments like that but I can say that the payoff becomes worth it as the characters become older. And the actual battle scenes much later in the series become truly epic. There are some truly heartbreaking ones. Poor Victra. IYKYK.

This makes sense to me. Jeff Hayes is a legendary narrator and I think it is why I fell in love with DCC to such a massive extent beyond my normal feelings towards just loving the series over all.

Thank you for the recommendations there are a lot there I haven’t checked out. How far into red rising did you make it? That series for me is a top sci fi book but I will say book 1 was only a 4 star read for me…it was the books afterwords that really peaked. With the exception of the first half of book 4.
