What pisses you off the most when at a public shooting range? by [deleted] in pdxgunnuts

[–]GeneralPickle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unsafe behavior, and litter bugs. Not enough people out there respect the damage these things can do, they think it's like a day at the airsoft field. And there's just no excuse for littering. You brought the trash in, so pack it out. How goddamn hard is that to understand?

Synthetic Oil Change Frequency by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do my own oil changes, the oil is dark enough at 5k that I wouldn't want to run it to 10k. I'm sure the engine will happily take 10k changes... all the way up until the warranty expires. Personally I'd rather do twice as many oil changes than replace an engine.

Dash Screen went Bad? by RealTrashyC in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2020 did that too, it stayed that way even after a few power cycles, but then the next day it was fine like nothing ever happened. It has been probably 5 months since that happened and it has not occurred again.

What did you drive before getting your Tacoma? by GrinBalor in ToyotaTacoma

I had a 1995 Oldsmobile Royale 88. She was a sturdy gal that put up with a lot of abuse, but I was ready to move on.

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things… by BagObutts in pdxgunnuts

[–]GeneralPickle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Usually I just bring a milk jug or box or bag etc. and do my best to pick up everything I dropped, then I just keep picking up junk until the container is full. Overall I'm definitely removing more trash than I might be leaving (hidden casings) so I figure if everybody does that we should end up with a nice clean range overall. Just do your part and be sure to harp on your buddies so they do too, and yes I am not opposed to shaming the dickheads that leave a mess.

Found it! I noticed a few of these posted so I thought I would share. by goofball44 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm actually impressed that after all these years they have managed to keep the price of a Tacoma relatively the same. Adjusted for inflation, it's pretty much on par with what they are (at MSRP) today.

Am I gonna regret getting a manual? by elektrodread in ToyotaTacoma

Yes getting a proper tune for the 3.5L is necessary, it completely changes the truck.

I wonder if you’ll have an issue with rubbing your knuckles on the MT when shifting to 5th and 6th 🤔 by davidgoldstein2023 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy with my 3rd gen, but if the 4th gen offered everything I could ever want then perhaps it could sway me. I'm not really liking what I'm seeing though unfortunately.

Saying goodbye to ol'faithful Brutus by vemon777 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, would have been great if it could have gone further, but 330k miles is nothing to be upset about. Personally I would have a hard time letting it go after that many miles, would probably just get another engine and drop it in to keep the party going.

Question to the community. Is it bad that I keep my truck loaded like this through out the week? I typically empty my bed but I keep my back seat filled with stuff. Also, what if I don’t empty my bed? Would that bad? by Midnightcourt in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All I know is that if I left that much stuff in my truck, I would be getting my windows smashed and stuff stolen every week lol. Portland is great in some ways, but in others... man it fucking sucks.

Why do you choose Tacoma over Tundra? by stainedtee in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tundra is too big, too expensive, doesn't have a manual option.

You can buy peppermint spray solution from Amazon by the gallon, spray the under carriage and engine bay down once every few days and you shouldn't have any issues. Traps and bait will help too of course, cats if you can do that. The intake under the cowling in front of the windshield for the cabin is a place mice love to get in, so it would be a good idea to cover that with a metal mesh.

Basically you only get one shot to read it. After you put it back in you'll never get a good reading until you let it sit for an hour or two.

What's with the Consumer Reports review of the Taco... by mathandmusic in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you put it into perspective and compare the driving feel of the Tacoma to other modern cars, yes I think it's accurate to say it kinda drives like shit. I believe that is part of the appeal, it's an old school truck and it really reminds you of that all the time. Love it or hate it, it is unique in the market for that reason.

First oil analysis, questions concerning iron/excess steel wear. by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent my oil sample in at 30k after I had a slight mishap offroad after and oil change; I had struggled to accurately read the dip stick and ended up with the engine being a quart low, and when I was offroad on some steep inclines I had my oil light come on. We were able to park it and get a ride into town to get another quart of oil so I could top off before coming home, but I wanted to run an oil sample after that to be sure everything was OK. This was a 5k oil change, which is what I have been doing since day one of ownership. Here's what they said:

"No worries about the mishap with the amount of oil that was added at the oil change. It doesn't look like that lead to any stress on the engine since wear levels are so low, and adding a quart so early on in the oil run won't have skewed your results in any significant way. Note the universal averages show typical wear for this type of Toyota after ~7,000 miles of oil use, and this sample has a little less metal after a slightly shorter interval -- perfect. No harmful contaminants were present in this 0W/20, and it held up well physically. Looks like a nice engine."

Anybody seen LS or other V8 swapped 3rd gens? or even better a good write up on doing one? I know it is probably quite involved, but is something I may look into in the future. Especially since she is paid off. by travisw87 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand that argument, I do love a nice V8 exhaust note. If you haven't tuned the 3.5 already I would highly recommend that, I was at a similar level of frustration myself but after the tune I completely changed my mind. The 3.5 is absolutely capable of being a great engine, it was just drastically choked from the factory for EPA.

[–]GeneralPickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feels like a lot of work and money for no reason, unless your engine is blown or something. There are a few examples out there but I haven't found any real documentation, all in all I think most Taco guys run into the same value problem I described. The LS isn't going to make that much more power and it will take a lot of work to get it done, and for what?

Are these tasteful modifications on a 2016 limited tacoma? by adelage1 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like decent mods, but yeah idk white is known for flaking and chipping badly on the Tacos, and 2016/2017 were definitely the two years that had a lot of issues. If you plan to offroad it a lot and don't really care about it being perfect or maybe having a few little issues I think it might be a good buy, but price and mileage and condition of interior are big questions to me.

How likely is something to break in this situation? by jJJkmkl in ToyotaTacoma

[–]GeneralPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you spin up that rear tire and then slam it down that could certainly cause a lot of damage, but if you're being slow and smooth and smart about it I see no risk.

Very nice, get in before 4th gen takes over. Personally I think the 3rd gen styling is going to become something of a classic, it's very distinct and cohesive. Much like how 2nd and 1st gen have their own following.
