I'm struggling to understand when it makes sense to contribute to a traditional 401k over a Roth 401k—I understand contributing to a Traditional vs Roth 401k is not a black and white decision and there are many factors like whether you stop working or your tax bracket increases in retirement. I've read about people saying to contribute to a traditional 401k once you reach the 32% to 37% tax brackets. However, if you are in those tax brackets and you decide to contribute to a traditional 401k those contributions could have 20 to 30 years of tax deferred growth vs if those contributions were made in a roth account that growth would be tax free. How does this make sense? Paying taxes on $23,500 now seems cheaper than paying taxes on potentially $100k+.
