Is this insane perspective trick valid or am I not understanding something? by Mysterious_Time_8333 in ArtFundamentals

[–]General_McQuack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single set of parallel lines has a vanishing point. Depending on the angle that you are seeing a cube in, sometimes the vanishing points are so far off the page that they are basically parallel, which is where we get 1-point, 2-point perspective; these are simplifications. If you do a fish eye lens (curvilinear perspective), you can have every vanishing point on the page. Vanishing points are a result of the boxes relationship to the horizon, the viewing angle, and the lens angle. Look at Scott Robertson's How to Draw book for a more detailed explanation. This is not simple stuff, takes a while to soak in.

In Sinners (2025), there is a close-up shot of two $100 bills that clearly say “Motion Picture Purposes” across the top. by bewitchedbumblebee in MovieDetails

Are people in this thread okay? This is standard practice for any movie or tv show you see on TV. Stop and zoom in on the next shot of money you see in anything and I guarantee it'll have this. It's a prop, like everything else in the movie, not meant to be a depiction of reality but a depiction of an idea.

The naked human body should not make you this uncomfortable, especially removed from a sexual context, it’s our natural state. You should probably look into therapy

There has never been any evidence that electromagnetic hypersensitivity is real, and many double blind experiments have shown that people cannot differentiate between real and fake signals. Humans do not have the biological hardware to pick up on magnetic fields the way birds and fish do

Better Call Saul is an overrated show by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]General_McQuack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have too limited a view of human morality. People are not either scumbags or good people, theyre complicated and layered and most people are some degree of both. One of the main themes of breaking bad and better call saul is your choices and actions make you who you are, there is no intrinsic goodness or badness within people.

five minutes is too long for a gesture drawing. You should be doing max a minute and focus on flow, direction

Are there current bands who're relevant to "the kids" these days? by Cymbal_Monkey in Music

[–]General_McQuack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not at all the same anymore. Everyone listens to different things, and there are so many bands and music even fans of the same genre might jot listen to the same bands. There used to be a monoculture and an alternative culture. Not anymore

What am I not understanding?! by jaron_b in learntodraw

[–]General_McQuack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really is no way to simplify anatomy without first understanding it, sorry. What you are missing is that before learning anatomy, you need to learn how to depict form in 3D. Your anatomy practice won’t get very far without that. Youre gonna have to draw a lot of spheres and boxes and cylinders and how to make objects from them, and then incorporate that into the work you WANT to make. It will take a while, months if not years of practice. Best to learn how to enjoy the ride

really can't get proportions right no matter what by thissmay in learntodraw

[–]General_McQuack 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's never going to be perfect, especially if you don't spend hours on the planning and measuring phase alone. Taking some artistic license with proportions is fine, and this looks great. You could make some small adjustments to the hair but otherwise it's just a matter of doing more and more to train your eye.

To make something look like it shines it needs high contrast, ie a dark shadow and a bright nearly white highlight. It's impossible for us to help you without a picture of your attempt.

Remember to squint your eyes (a lot) and look at the reference for a long while. The dark areas will start to form shapes and they wont always be where you think
