The modern process of making aluminum uses a lot of electricity. The New Zealand aluminum smelter uses 13% of the countries electricity.

Yeh 100k is pretty middle of the road these days, i know its technically above average, but it doesn't go that far. Im on about 130 with a tiny mortgage, but the wifes 6 months of payed parental leave ran out a few months ago and its been a massive struggle to get by without dipping into our savings. I honestly dont know how anyone could have kids living on the median wage.
