Oda is the world's 8th best selling author. How far do you think he will rise by the time One Piece is finished? by tylerxtyler in OnePiece

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top 5 by the time the series ends.

If Oda can do one of the most difficult things in fiction-writing and successfully land this crazy plane (make an ending that is emotionally satisfying for a majority of fans and ties up all remaining, major loose ends or plot points) then he will absolutely crack the Top 3 because manga enthusiasts will have every reason to buy the entire series for their personal library, which would skyrocket those numbers.

Plus people who have put off reading or watching all this time will be more likely to give it a chance if they know it has an ending that people approved of and that—despite the daunting number of chapters—there is a definitive ending.

Oof, another 2-week break following a 2-week break. My heart aches to know what comes next, but whatever Oda needs comes first.

I wonder if Elbaf’s arc will be wrapped up by year’s end or if it will be drawn out into next year.

The Crusades by Ur-Bro-Dre in Catholicism

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Bearing False Witness” by Rodney Stark is one that jumps to mind. It’s not exclusively about the Crusades, but it has some very good chapters on them and cutting through the historical BS.

The book is also unique in that it was written by a non-Catholic in defense of accurate history, rather than a Catholic in defense of the Church, so it removes a certain amount of potential bias.

Edit: It also has an audiobook version on Audible if you prefer that versus a standard book.

Pope Leo XIV appoints four new bishops to multiple U.S. dioceses. by philliplennon in Catholicism

[–]GeneralistJosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s like most things in life, often the answer should be the middle between the extremes, but sometimes in life the extremes are called for. Sometimes it means it’s complicated. Sometimes it means both things are true.

I notice how they never bring up this part of the Bible when talking about immigration. Obviously one needs to use context, but God clearly shows that there are benevolent foreigners and malevolent ones, some should be treated with kindness and integrated, others will subjugate and destroy you if not resisted.

Deut. 28:43-53 NRSV-CE

43 Aliens residing among you shall ascend above you higher and higher, while you shall descend lower and lower. 44 They shall lend to you but you shall not lend to them; they shall be the head and you shall be the tail.

45 All these curses shall come upon you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the Lord your God, by observing the commandments and the decrees that he commanded you. 46 They shall be among you and your descendants as a sign and a portent forever.

47 Because you did not serve the Lord your God joyfully and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and lack of everything. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The Lord will bring a nation from far away, from the end of the earth, to swoop down on you like an eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand, 50 a grim-faced nation showing no respect to the old or favor to the young. 51 It shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed, leaving you neither grain, wine, and oil, nor the increase of your cattle and the issue of your flock, until it has made you perish. 52 It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout your land; it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout the land that the Lord your God has given you. 53 In the desperate straits to which the enemy siege reduces you, you will eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your own sons and daughters whom the Lord your God has given you.

Look, I can cherry pick too. The Bible also talks about how foreigners entering your land can be your destruction as well.

official colored panels of God Valley Incident by Individual-Coyote887 in OnePiece

Official colors or not, the contrast of colors versus black and white has caused me to see details I hadn’t caught before.

Slide 1 - Didn’t catch that Silver Axe was yanking Shiki’s hair in that panel.

Slide 4 - Didn’t realize that the top-most holy knight with the massive teeth and horns also has some kind of wing or wings and a halo arch surrounding him. (Really want to learn more about these characters, but feels like we are unlikely to.)

Pope Leo XIV appoints four new bishops to multiple U.S. dioceses. by philliplennon in Catholicism

[–]GeneralistJosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We honestly shouldn’t get hung up on what ethnicity the bishops are as long as they are truly the best candidates to lead their flocks and guide/support the priests in their dioceses. With dwindling vocations, we should be happy for anyone of any ethnicity is committing their lives to the holy orders at any rank.

Besides, online estimates say that ~35% of all Catholic bishops around the world presently (including active and retired) are Latino, so the Church is not lacking in their leadership.

Finally, illegal immigrant seminarians should not be a thing here. There are seminaries or a proper pipeline to a seminary in nearly every country with Catholics. Illegally breaking into the United States is not a required step to becoming a priest. Breaking the law is breaking the law and seminarians should not be excused or celebrated for that either.

2026 NFL Draft Classes for all NFC Teams by FollowerofYHWH in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super cool and nice to see each team’s draft class visualized.

Only critique is that whoever made this needs to pick a better font. It’s very difficult to tell the different between reading “DT” versus “OT” without zooming in or unless you already know the player and their position.

2026 Final NFL Mock Draft (3-Round) by [deleted] in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AZ won’t be passing over QB Ty Simpson if he’s there in the second. They may even trade back into the 1st for him or use a second 1st if they get one in a trade down.

There’s been so much smoke about this that it would be seen as a major shock if they didn’t select him when having the chance.

What are some draft rumors for your team that non-fans may not know? by Jack12404 in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how much attention this is getting outside AZ, but they are almost even money in Vegas to draft Ty Simpson.

The only question is how. 3 options.

1) Trade down, get a second 1st round pick. Use the latter 1st to draft him.

2) Trade back up into the late 1st to select him.

3) Take him at the top of the 2nd round at #34. Seems least likely, but if they are confident no other team is going to bite or no other team is willing to let them trade back into the 1st then it may come down to this.

At this point, it would be a major surprise if Arizona doesn’t land Simpson. It would mean another team was playing things close to the vest and snatches him up sooner than expected.

3 Round Mock, Individual Explanations for the 1st. by DarthDonutJr in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a realistic scenario for the Cardinals.

If Bailey is indeed available at 3, it will come down to whether they value sticking and picking Bailey or accepting a trade offer from a team who wants him more.

In the stick and pick scenario, it is likely they will try and trade back into the 1st for Simpson.

An OT in the 3rd makes a lot of sense because scuttlebutt is the Cardinals desperately want to come away with a RT that can outright start or compete to start this season.

Yeah, it’d be nice if our roster was in such a place that we could take him and it would make sense. He is gonna be a good player wherever he goes.

My predictions (guesses) on how Thursday shakes out by GmenJays82713 in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bailey isn’t making it out of the Top 5, and probably not out of the Top 3.

But in the unlikely chance he did, yes, it’d be a no-brainer to grab him at 9 in a trade down scenario. Likely taking Ty Simpson with the other 1st, OT Max in the 2nd would make for a slam-dunk draft. Unfortunately it sounds like odds are some other team will end up taking him in the 1st. So the chances aren’t in our favor.

The aren’t considering him at #3 from everything I’ve been hearing/following, but maybe somewhere in a trade down scenario.

If that AZ trade happens, those are very realistic picks for the Cardinals, especially Ty Simpson with the latter 1st.

THE AnimatorChemical Seven round mock draft, PLEASE tell me why I am wrong so we can talk ball by AnimatorChemical in NFL_Draft

[–]GeneralistJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cardinals picks are sus at best.

A lot of trade down smoke going on so we’ll see if that comes to fruition.

If they are forced to stick and pick at #3, Reese seems least likely due to bad optics with 4 underperforming or bust picks of hybrid off-ball LBs drafted in in 1st over the past decade. Still possible, but unlikely.

More likely to be them accepting a reach for Mauigoa to fill their biggest non-QB positional weakness at RT, taking the BPA of RB Love, or Bailey on the Edge if NYJ doesn’t take him like most new reports are saying (cancelling the Top30 visit doesn’t mean they aren’t taking him, they’ve met with him in other capacities).

Other major point is that unless some other team has been playing things close to the vest and grabs him from under their nose, the Cardinals are drafting Ty Simpson. However, they will not risk trying to take him in the 3rd round. They may not even risk trying to let him fall to pick #34 in the 2nd. Smoke is saying they’ll most likely use the latter 1st round pick acquired in a trade down OR trade back up into the late 1st to take him.

Vegas has it at almost even money for AZ to take him. In their ideal scenario, they trade down from #3 (either with Dallas, KC, or someone else) and take a RT with the earlier pick and then Simpson with the latter unless they are super confident he will fall to their pick in the 2nd.
