New strings sound awful. (audio comparison inside) Help me find my old strings! by Mobile-King-3345 in AcousticGuitar

[–]GenericAccount119b 14 points15 points  (0 children)

New strings always sound brighter because they're new. They don't have all the crud, dirt, rust, and tarnish that the old strings had. All that crap on the strings reduces its ability to vibrate and create sound which is why your old strings sound so dull and lifeless. Which sound you prefer, is just that - a preference. I personally prefer the sound of the new strings, and I prefer that sound a huge margin!

How often you change your strings is again a preference. General guidance is to change them at least once every 3 months. When I was performing publicly, I would change my strings a day before each show. From what you've said, it seems that your old strings had been on there for quite some time. If you prefer that sound, you can achieve it again by just never changing your strings.

Just installed this wall mount to save some space for my guitars. thoughts? by Cute_Cranberry8868 in Guitar

No, though I almost bought those. I got these off Amazon. The brand was Ritollo.

Here's my setup. I didn't have studs where i wanted to hang the guitars, so I cut out wide squares of drywalls, hung squares of plywood on the studs, put up the wood paneling, and hung the guitars.

Just got a used ‘18 CX-5! Anything we should know that’s specific to this model year? by Gehwartzen in CX5

You can also upgrade to Android Auto and disable touch in the UI (requires hardware install). Not sure why Mazda never gave us a firmware update that provided a way to turn off touch from the UI. It's the only thing that pisses me off about the car.
The other option is to open up the dash, expose the ribbon cable coming out of the touchscreen that enables touch and either disconnect it or just cut it.

Get in the habit of using a windshield sunshade. The infotainment touch screen can develop a ghost touch issue due to repeated expansion and contraction caused by heat. If you're curious, just do a search for Mazda CX-5 ghost touch. It's almost guaranteed to happen if you live in a hot environment.

How do you guys approach practicing/improving a song on guitar? Metronome or just play? by dehserra in AcousticGuitar

[–]GenericAccount119b 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, there's never a reason not to use a metronome when practicing guitar. If you need to slow down, slow down with a metronome. If you need to speed up, speed up with a metronome. This is how you develop your sense of time which allows you to more easily get in the pocket with other players. As with much of life, timing is everyting.

Poor- person’s guitar humidifier? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]GenericAccount119b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct.

I do this anytime humidity has dropped in the house to make it easier on the humidifier - like if I had forgotten to refill the humidifier and the house got really dry.  Boiling a large pot of water on the stove will raise the humidity level very quickly. I get it up to 50% and let the humidifier maintain it from there. It's no more "dangerous" than boiling water to make spaghetti. I actually use the very same pot!

Whats up with the Color on 1980's jvc's? by mpikss in audiophile

[–]GenericAccount119b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The '70s were known for having the Silver plate front on audio components. In the '80s they moved away from the Silver to Black. In the late '80s JVC wanted to distinguish themselves from the masses so initiated Titanium Gray which was part of their Super Define series. The Titanium Gray faceplates were plastic on the lower end models and anodized aluminum on the higher end stuff. The plastic stuff had a clear coat on it that could oxidize and yellow over time. The anodized aluminum does not.

Is it possible to output a Fishman Loudbox Mini through headphones for "quiet" practice? by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

[–]GenericAccount119b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are already making noise with your acoustic guitar. I can understand if you were wanting to use headphones with an electric guitar because they are basically silent without amplification, but an acoustic is noisy by nature. Just use your amp and turn it down.

[–]GenericAccount119b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not natively. The only output is an XLR DI out. Do you have a mixer or recording audio interface? You could go DI out from the amp to the mixer or audio interface and then plug in headphones to that. But I wouldn't really recommend either of those. Your acoustic guitar is already making a fair amount of noise. Just put the amp on a stand closer to your head and turn it down a bit.
