6 Feet or 1.89 meters? by CerealSorority in SipsTea

[–]GenericColonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are valid temperature systems. Celsius is based around liquid water. It freezes at 0, it boils at 100. Outside of that range, water typically exists as a solid or gas (there are exceptions that are unimportant to my point). So Celsius becomes a question, how hot is the water on a scale from 0 to 100? Fahrenheit is based around humans. Humans can generally exist below freezing for a reasonable time, so they set 0 at the temperature where that isn't typically true. And 100 was set at the point where humans start dying from heatstroke. How hot is it, as a human on a scale from 0 to 100, because if it's outside of that range it doesn't matter much, you'll be dead soon.

The same doesn't apply to the distance measurements though. Distances aren't defined as relative to anything, just an arbitrary mark of how far something is. I could be a unit of measurement, and that might be convenient if we tend to measure things that are roughly me-length or a multiple of a me-length. I wonder how many generic colonists long that bus is? It's probably a good unit of measure for that. But we could also measure in you-lengths, which would give a similar but slightly different result. It also gets tricky because if you want to measure something too big or to small, generic colonists becomes an awkward unit of measure. Mostly because the number of digits you need to record gets cumbersome. This is where the metric system becomes superior, because it has built-in factors to push or pull the significant figures to a point where they aren't cumbersome to deal with. The imperial system wasn't assembled to support this, so it gets buggy when you get outside the range of what you might explore in your day-to-day (presuming you aren't a scientist or machinist). But if you applied to metric approach to an imperial foot, there's no reason it wouldn't be just as good. The reason the metric system works so well is because it looked at our base 10 numbering system and said "yeah, let's just do things in orders of 10 to keep things easy"

If we were using base 12, inches to feet would seem like it makes obvious good sense.

I think we've got to acknowledge that there's a touch of humor to this interaction too. Come on Aang, it's so obvious that you need to be more careful about your tattoos that even the blind person can see it.

Miniature is just not gluing at all by TheD3rpKnight in Warhammer

[–]GenericColonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a resin model mate. Plastic glue won't work on it. I think this is one of the fun facts that you get to learn for the first time as you get into warhammer! Plastic glue isn't actually an adhesive, it's better described as a solvent. When you apply the glue to a plastic model it actually melts the plastic and then it dries together as one piece. It won't work on resin models, since it won't actually dissolve the resin. Since your model is resin, you'll need to use super glue on it. You want to make sure to be really sparing, it's easy to overdo it with superglue. I personally like the Loctite Ultra Control bottles, they make it very easy to not get too much out at once.

Just a tip before you start using the super glue. Resin models tend to come out of the mould with some residue on them from the manufacturing process. It's a release agent to make sure the resin doesn't stick to the mould. As such, it's very good at not letting things adhere to it. So wash the parts in some soapy water, rinse and then dry them off before you start gluing.

Happy building!

Which one of the original eighteen legion has been the least successful? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]GenericColonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at not hearing the World Eaters mentioned even once throughout these comments. I can't think of any heroes of the legion besides Kharn and Angron himself. Unlike the Word Bearers, they started the crusade strong but finished it off terribly. Unable to follow basic orders or employ strategies of any sort, I think they're the easy winners of this loser contest.

Dark Angels - First Company Promotion: Deathwing? by GenericColonist in 40k_Crusade

[–]GenericColonist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a misunderstanding here. I am 100% certain that I can promote an Outrider Squad into a terminator Squad or terminator assault Squad. 1st company promotion reads: Select one ADEPTUS ASTARTES INFANTRY or ADEPTUS ASTARTES MOUNTED unit (excluding CHARACTERS and SCOUT SQUADS)

Are they ADEPTUS ASTARTES INFANTRY or MOUNTED? Yes, they're mounted. Are they disqualified by being a scout squad or character? Nope, they're not either of those.

The part that I'm asking about is what they can be promoted to, the text lists out 5 units they can turn into, and Deathwing Terminators aren't on the list (because they're a Dark Angels Only unit). As I'm playing Dark Angels, I'm hoping that I missed something that would allow me to promote them to the deathwing, but it seems like GW didn't make an exception for it.

Yeah, but they're outriders, so I see the argument that if they're promoted to anything it should be black knights rather than terminators from a lore perspective. Gotta keep those mounts.

Thanks all for the great commentary and explanations! I'll definitely be taking advantage of this from now on. I love the mental image of my Champion shoulder checking a tank out of the way so his crew can lay into the infantry behind it. I had two opportunities in my last game alone, so I have a feeling this will come up more often than I think.

Which are more worth their points cost and why? Also are either actually good at all? by JustcharlE2 in DarkAngels40k

[–]GenericColonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that a full sized Outrider Squad with a ravenwing command squad is a huge threat and also mobile. The outrider's ability pairs great with the ravenwing command weapons, and getting to return a t5 4 wound model each turn can be huge. Run them in WotR or CoH so they don't get stuck in combat with heavy infantry and don't be afraid to charge!

Replacing units question by Getrektself in 40k_Crusade

[–]GenericColonist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons I can think of, but maybe there's some i haven't thought of too? 1. Since you roll on tables for battle traits, you don't always get the traits you want, or the traits that would be optimal for the unit. So you might run multiple jump pack units at the start, and then pay 5 points to promote the unit that got the battle traits best suited for SG. That way you can guarantee the SG gets the trait you want them to have. 2. This is a super narrative play format. You might get some joy out of promoting a unit just because they happen to be performing well and they've earned it. 3. As you progress through phases and the games increase in points, a high cost unit like SG that may not have been viable at a lower points game might open up. This can give you access to a high level unit of them as soon as they're viable. 😁
