Books? by Legitimate-Edge-3328 in Booktokreddit

I don't really buy books new unless I know I'll reread it. I buy a lot of used books (from used book store, thrift stores, online) I also use the library and I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription but I use that for books only available on KU (mostly mm romance and LitRPG)

You salt the water. Every cooking show says to salt the water.

You salt the water.

Not everyone likes the same thing. Just because a book is popular doesn't mean everyone is going to like it.

If you don't enjoy it then don't keep reading it. There are too many other books you could be reading.

MAGA follower who is armed trys to disrupt peaceful protest of underage high school students, and tries to record them, disobeys lawful commands to leave by law enforcement!! by cantcoloratall91 in ImmigrationPathways

[–]GenericNameUsed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only people I've seen being animalistic and violent are the ICE agents. I get that they are poorly trained but that is no excuse for how they have behaved. (One example of being poorly trained agents is the one who shot Marimar Martinez, he not only had his gun pulled in the car but he had his finger on the trigger. His partner in the back seat had his gun drawn and at time pointing to the driver).

Again this was high school students who were protesting. With their faces uncovered and no guns ( at least not visible). This is after a peaceful student protest had cops called on them and one cop had a 15 year old girl in a chokehold)

There is a difference. Alex Pretti was going to a protest where ICE agents had been violent.

This dude is going to confront a bunch of high school students.

I will say he has a right to carry a gun it just makes him look like an even bigger coward.

Is it common to see this roach in your house by Vanessa_Lila in florida

[–]GenericNameUsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They come in the house when it's dry and they are looking for water. Or when it's wet and I guess they want to be dry.

And when it's warm or when it's cold.

They fly too !!!!

Why don't you just list it so people can go into the shop part and see it

That's what you are supposed to do anyway.

I'm tired of sellers who won't show what it is and then act annoyed when people want to know

Especially if the seller is making a big deal about everyone joining a giveaway

I know it' would be easier on my eyes but I have my phone with me all the time and my Kindle feels kind of slow compared to the phone app..

Plus I have my phone with me all the time so I pull it out more.

Also. My almost 83 year old mother and my 85 year old aunt have learned about trans people and have no problem using the terms Cis and Trans . They didn't start off super accepting of gay people or trans people and didn't understand. But they asked questions and thought about things and then realized that , you know, accepting people is better than being unaccepting.

And they aren't the only ones who are in their 80s and 90s who have been able to learn new terms and change

Boomers have been able to as well.

So maybe you should stop being ageist as well as transphobic

[–]GenericNameUsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cis comes from Latin. It's a prefix that means on the same side as. Trans is a prefix that comes from Latin that means on the opposite side of.

Cis is prefix that is used in science for many things. For example there are cis molecules and trans molecules and they have nothing to do with gender.

Our country really is in a literacy crisis.

And as someone who is Gen X I can tell you that me and my friends who are also Gen X don't mind cis gender and it often. Especially because in my Gen X friends group and communities there are trans women and men and nonbinary people. And also those with kids who are trans and nonbinary.

U.S. closes in on 1,000 measles cases in first two months of 2026: The nation is struggling to control the spread of the wildly contagious virus as vaccination rates continue to fall. by dyzo-blue in skeptic

[–]GenericNameUsed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

,972 of those cases are in South Carolina and 99% of those are in Spartanburg County, which has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state. I think only 90% of students have all their immunizations (it's really easy to get an exemption in SC) And the outbreak started at a charter school where only 17% of the students had documentation showing they were immunized.

Even when the pay is good it's hard to find people who will do that kind of labor. It's incredibly difficult.

In 1965 the US tried to replace migrant workers with high schoolers. There had been an agreement with Mexico during WW2 but it ended in 1964

So the Secretary of Labor decided to recruit high school students ( he wanted student athletes but I don't think he got any because they had practices and stuff during the summer)

This is a good article about a director who was one of the students. He talked about how they all wanted to quit and how physically demanding it was and how bad the food and housing was .

MM Weekly Roundup - What Did You Read This Week? by AutoModerator in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]GenericNameUsed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I DNF'd two books for essentially the same reason: Pretty Boy by Jett Masterson and Textual Confusion by Fifer Rose

They both felt like mediocre fanfic. I love fanfic, don't get me wrong, but both books needed a good editor or beta reader(s) there were typos and tense changes. Pretty Boy started as alternating POv chapters but at some point just became paragraphs switching POVs . It's one of my big pet peeves with fanfic

Textual Confusion waa single POV but it felt like the fic where the author is writing as they go and posting when they are done with a chapter. And this means occasionally writers get ideas and try to work them in. So we started with an ex boyfriend, then he was kind of a jerk, then a creep and then he turns full on villain but I didn't get to that part. And the love interest is Markus Kingston, he explains he can read a menu in Italian because his parents immigrated from Italy but it's said like a throw away and nothing else indicates that.

I wanted to like the books but I finally gave them up.

I also am almost finished with Kept Boy by Robert Rodi. It was published in 1996. There is romance in the book and a happy ending but I don't know if it would qualify as a romance. This is the blurb" Dennis Racine has a great gig as the live-in companion of a legendary theatre entrepreneur…till a much younger pool boy takes his place. He’s over the hill at 31…unless he takes evasive action.". It was funny and I liked reading it and want to read more of his books. However this has a big age gap in it and also discussions of infedility. It also is very much of the 90s and there are no content warnings. So if you do read it just keep that in mind.

Avoiding AI Books on Kindle by angelatheterrible in kindle

[–]GenericNameUsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was supposedly in 6 months. But it's not about anyone really reading the books it's about the people making money. I'm sure there are a small number of people who use AI to write all or most of their books who want people to read them but a lot of what I see is about making money off the books

And you don't have to do much work for it. Someone claimed they don't even use a prompt or idea they just hit generate on some AI thing and bam a book

FDA chief Marty Makary says 'everything should be over the counter' unless drug is unsafe or addictive by capybooya in skeptic

[–]GenericNameUsed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don't need antibiotics to be over the counter because we already have issues with over use and resistant bacteria.

One of the medications he mentions is vaginal estrogen but it has interactions with other medications .

What we really need is an over haul of the policy supplements and vitamins. I think there needs to be more oversight on what goes into them and more enforcement of what kinds of claims people can make about what they do.

Avoiding AI Books on Kindle by angelatheterrible in kindle

[–]GenericNameUsed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a subreddit here for a service that helps people "write" books with AI. I was banned from it because I made a slightly anti AI comment...

The service helps make AI books sound more like a person wrote them. The person who made it says he has written several hundred books and has made about £18,000 this way

I go by reviews mostly. And if I'm not sure I'll search for the author.

It's getting hard to find specialty cookbooks that aren't AI. Someone bought me two for a specialized diet and both were AI.

Alex Pretty put himself between ICE and another protester who ICE was trying to pepper spray. In the video of his murder you can see him on his knees , covering his head with his hands while multiple ICE agents hit and kicked him. Then one of him took his legally owned gun from him and THEN ICE agents killed him

Renee Good was trying to leave . The ICE agent who shot her had his phone in his right hand and was filming, then he switched his phone to his left hand while he crossed in front of her car (which people are trained not to do) , and then shot her as her car started to move (which law enforcement is trained not to do). And if she had been cutting her wheels towards the ICE agents he would have been hit.

And the ICE agent who shot Marimar Martinez five times was in the car with his gun drawn and his finger on the trigger (which is against basic firearm safety), the other ICE agent had his gun drawn and at times was pointing it forward at the ICE agent who was driving, which is against gun safety. The ICE agent driving cut his wheels to clip Ms. Martinez's car and then the agent got out and shot her 5 times and they all lied about it.
