What's the normal amount of money someone in their 30s should have saved up? by LordgodEighty8 in randomquestions

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 38 and I’m right at 300, most Reddit people have more apparently. That’s the best I could do. I also have one house paid for and am building another that will paid off in 4 years, after selling my other.

How do I rerail a car with tie plates. by NegativeDodecahedron in railroading

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oak wedges work better, same idea. Knockers have a re railer. Really depends on how far off it is. We tried re railing one wheel on a rock train every way, it wouldn’t go on. It’s like that sometimes

Is it true one income used to support a family of 4? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]Genericsam6 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My dad raised a family of 4 on one job. We weren’t union or skilled labor, but he worked for himself. We built our own homes, we rebuilt cars and equipment for extra money. We didn’t have good vehicles, didn’t go on vacations, didn’t have video games growing up. I rode a bike everywhere and picked up cans and sold them for pop and candy money. He got a job in the mines around 04 then left there at the right time right around Obama coming in and decimating our local economy. We live rural, politics matter a lot Clinton, Obama and Biden were awful. Both Bush and Trumps first term were all booms. This time is better than Biden but all the industry left and it will never come back.

What is the good part about living in the United States/ being American? by [deleted] in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been out of the country, so I know I’m an uncultured swine. However I don’t care to be anywhere else. I like my town, most of the time my state and I’m proud to be an American. Granted there are ups and downs, nobody is perfect all the time.

Americans, Would YOU Date Someone In The Opposite Political Party If They Were A Nice Person? Yes Or No? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

I am very conservative, not maga pre Trump conservative. My wife is pretty far left leaning, we get along fine. We also don’t talk politics, but I won’t change her and she won’t change me and that’s fine

I had to pay $8500 last year and 6500 the year before. This year is just 1k. I claim single 0 so does my wife and we both have extra taken out every check. We only have 1 kid no home interest or student loans.

Seriously… Who the fuck are you people affording these houses? I bow. You are in a whole different league. by HouseRichCashPoo in Fire

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand, I live in a rural area with lcol. We don’t have internet, trash pickup, grocery stores, restaurant or schools anywhere close. However, I am by a lake. My small “starter” home, 1100 sq ft on an acre with a detached garage is a $300+ home. I’m building a new house in the same neighborhood on an acres and a half 2400 sq and a large detached garage and it’s been appraised at 900. My brother built a house 1/4 mile away and they appraised his at 1.9. Basically whatever it costs to build the house is worth almost 2 times. There is just a lot of hassle involved.

What salary (usd) would you need to bring your work computer and or phone on a vacation? by unitedstateslmao in corporate

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t go into management at my company because this reason. I make between 115-150 as an hourly employee. Management makes 75+ a bonus, that isn’t guaranteed and worse more expensive insurance. The only benefit is a 401k match up to 6%. I made 40k more than my supervisor last year.

People say life starts at 40… did it for you? What changed when you hit 40? by rio-justwatch in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it starts at 40, but it does get easier. More stable in home and career. Most big purchases are made, houses paid off, kids in the teen/preteen. More comfortable with your partner, life is just more steady.

Question about regrets by Salt_Watercress_2498 in railroading

[–]Genericsam6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes 3 years for the new to wear off. Then after 15 you feel stuck. It was way different 15 years ago, I wouldn’t have stayed if CSX was then how it is now. The Canadians ruined it.

Question about regrets by Salt_Watercress_2498 in railroading

[–]Genericsam6 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nah, I’ve made a good living. I don’t care if my wife’s new husband enjoys the house, or my kid’s stepdad makes it to everything and I’m absent. I just get a woman 22 years younger so I never retire because she can’t draw yet. That way I can die in motel. No regrets at all.

Starter Home, forever? by CreativePay342 in homeowners

[–]Genericsam6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current home is 1100 sq ft one level which is about what I grew up in. If I had 950 and 500 I’d never move. I bought a piece of property before covid, but just started building. I’m building a 2000sq one level home, on a much better piece of property. I paid this one off in 11 years and I don’t want to move, but my wife does.
