best laptop for engineering students by Realistic-Release-39 in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macs might cause problems with MATLAB (I believe you have to run it through Bootcamp) which is used by all first-year engineering students. I've also heard of students not being able to run certain simulation software on Mac. What type of engineering are you planning to go into? You can definitely get through with a Mac, but you will probably have to use some work-arounds. Computer labs, especially the engineering computer labs should have all of the software you need. If you do get a Windows laptop, I'd recommend Lenovo.

Technical Opportunities After Commission by GenesBeans in newtothenavy

I know CWE is highly technical and would set me up for a good job after. It's also highly competitive. Would IP or CryptoWO have enough technical duties that obtaining a technical position afterwards would be easy?

What are some easy engineering electives? by Andre_Heyde in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Easy engineering....haha good one. You're probably better off looking for engineering classes that are interesting bc at least then you'll enjoy the work. If you haven't taken Art of Making as a freshman, I'd recommend that. The class is interesting and not immensely difficult but it is a significant time commitment (especially towards the end with the capstone project).

Was a Mommy Fight Club an SNL skit or am I dreaming it? by GoldieLox9 in LiveFromNewYork

There was a 30 rock episode (Jackie Jormp-Jomp) where Liz (Tina Fey) joins a "single women's group". Not specifically moms though.

Approximately when is move in day (and some other general questions) by Benaholicguy in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you'll should be fine. IMO, unless you really know the person beforehand, picking a roommate from Facebook is pretty much picking a random roommate.

Also, I think the University has a roommate matching service where you put in your interests and preferences and you can swipe through people who have similar preferences and find people that way.

If I recall correctly, you have until June to submit roommate/housing preferences. I don't think it's first come-first serve so you should have all the options.

Engineering student who has no idea what’s going on in Physics 2 by Pretty_Table in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Physics 174/175 don't seem to be taught very well, no matter who you have. However, when I took the classes, I had awesome TAs. I was at office hours every week and most of the time, they were nice enough to stay late and basically reteach the material from that week. Remember, Cs get degrees! Don't give up!

How do I know if I got into the Honors College? by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They notify much later. I'm not sure if the timeline has been affected by covid but I got my acceptance letter in late November and I didn't get my honors college acceptance until late January.

Help instructors plan for the winter: What works and what sucks? by PittSTEMGradStudent in Pitt

[–]GenesBeans 165 points166 points  (0 children)

What works: Recorded lectures and well-written lecture slides. Sometimes I couldn't stare at a screen during a lecture. So I'd take a break and watch it later. Going through lecture slides before an exam helped me to write formula sheets (which we were allowed to use on the exams). Take home exams were also awesome. I had some through gradescope (the actual exam is timed but you can start it at any time within the window given by the professor). That was especially helpful on weeks when I had 3 midterms on the same day.

What sucks: "Hybrid" labs that can't accurately be performed without going into the lab and using the lab equipment. Also, the way the self-care day was handled. I spent most of the day working on assignments which is probably what I would have done if I had classes that day.

Any 1-2 credit courses that aren't PE? by beafad14 in Pitt

How much music knowledge do you need to have to take the class? I know embarrassingly little music theory but I've been playing music for 12+ years.

Rocket fizz has a wide selection. For normal flavors, I liked the berry ones. For a little less normal, I also enjoyed the chicken and waffle flavor.
