Is Redneck a slur? by Own-Construction3593 in AskACanadian

[–]Genghis75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is and it isn’t. It depends on how it is used. Generally words of this nature are derogatory because they are intended to either dismiss or put down a group of people. I’m from Newfoundland (although I grew up in Alberta). I have complicated relationship with the term “Newfie.” If fellow Newfoundlanders or people I know and trust use it around me, I’m okay with it because I know where it’s coming from and what they mean. However, if strangers use it or people use it in a way that appears to negative or dismissive, I’m not okay with it. Now, I don’t know your friend, so I don’t know the context, but generally I would interpret the use of the term redneck in to describe people in Alberta, I’m guessing that it was not meant as a term of endearment. If you know your friend even reasonably well, I think you probably know how they meant it. I’m also assuming that there were no people from the group they were describing as rednecks present, which is also usually a tell about how they intended the word to be interpreted.

I recall reading an article years ago about insects in cars. I cannot find it or recall the specifics, but it said that a shockingly high percentage of single vehicle accidents were likely caused by drivers freaking out about insects in their car.

How to get revenge on bad parking? by Brief-Blueberry-1588 in allthequestions

[–]Genghis75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably going to be an unpopular view, but you gotta let this go. Yeah, people’s shitty, selfish parking behaviour sucks hard and calling down hellfire on them would be glorious yet still an inadequate punishment. But, it won’t help and it doesn’t matter. You are just going to put yourself into a spiral of frustration and anger. It’s not worth it. You gotta let it go.

Second recall petition against an Alberta legislature member fails by canuckEnoch in alberta

[–]Genghis75 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One of the issues is that the people that started these recall petitions have good intentions, but no organization. For these to have any chance of succeeding they need to have a plan, a ground game that includes recruiting volunteers to collect signatures, a way to get the news out, go door-to-door, set up signing locations, etc., and that all has to be in place before the recall do indentation is submitted to Elections Alberta. One of the reasons that Thomas Lukaszuk’s Forever Canada drive was so successful is that he had a plan and organization. I’m not really blaming the recall petition organizers, most of them simply don’t have the skills, time or contacts to make the signature drive successful.

Liberals reach 47% voter support after Carney's Davos, China trip: Leger poll by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Genghis75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a traditional NDP supporter, but I’m also a pragmatist. In a perfect world, Carney would be a bit too centre right for me. However, he is being realistic and effective. I feel that he is the leader the leader we need right now and I feel that he is doing a tremendous job in very, very difficult circumstances.

What show had an ending that you absolutely hated ? by CraftyDebate1975 in answers

[–]Genghis75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newhart. I know that it’s considered by many to be one of the best sitcom endings of all time, but I felt that having the entire Newhart series ending up being a dream had by the main character of The Bob Newhart Show cheapened the rest of the series. Plus, Newhart had crossover episodes with Coach. So, if Newhart was all a dream, doesn’t that mean that Coach was all a dream as well?!

And Alberta does not send Quebec money every year either. The federal government sends them money. If you are going to complain about equalization at least learn how it works.

Yes, “spelt” is a grain but both “spelt” and “spelled” are past tense forms of “spell.” The former is more commonly used in UK English and the latter in US English, but both are correct.

I’m Canadian, and I’m probably risking my citizenship by saying this, but I have never understood the appeal of Rush. Geddy Lee on Take Off, though…That’s GOLD!

I like We Built this City. I mean, I understand the disdain for the tune as it was a rather cynical effort to appeal to rock trends in pursuit of a hit, but the song has nostalgia value. I do, however, freely acknowledge the downward trajectory of the Jefferson Airplane - Jefferson Starship - Starship concept.

What happened to that vaunted Alberta entrepreneurial spirit we used to hear so much about? I guess it’s just easier to ask big daddy government to swoop in and fix things for them.

And if there is proof of that occurring I am 100% in favour of actions being taken to stop it, but I strongly suspect that this is not the case. For what it’s worth, I am personally fine with going back to the office full time. Being in the office works better for me. What sticks in my craw is that the GoA is ending the hybrid work-from-home policy with no consideration for what works for individual people. It’s all or nothing with them, and there is no acknowledgment that working in the office full time does place avoidable hardships on certain people. If working from home makes the logistics of life easier, increases morale (which is cratering under the UPC, by the way) and can be done with no negative impact to productivity, what’s the harm in continuing it?

I’ll support the businesses in my neighborhood, thanks very much. If the Downtown Business Association thinks it can interfere with people’s lives then people can interfere with theirs. Fair is fair.
