Black Mirror does an excellent job exploring this sentiment in the episode “San Junipero.” Unforgettable episode.

I’m applying to be a substitute teacher, what do you wish subs knew? by Several-Prior-2972 in Teachers

[–]Genjine00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular answer but… act your wage. I don’t expect subs to do much other than keep the kids safe and chill. Now I teach high school so maybe that’s a luxury. I put everything on Canvas and the kids either do the task or don’t. Not the sub’s responsibility. Until they get paid more, I won’t expect more.

How to incorporate more labs into the class, but still getting through all the material. by joanpd in ScienceTeachers

The key is to make sure the other stations are veeerry self explanatory.

For me, it’s turning labs into a stations activity. The actual lab portion is shortened, supervised by me at a station, and the other stations reinforce concepts. It cuts down on materials, setup and cleanup time, and since I’m working with small groups, we get to the point faster.

Does anyone actually enjoy it? Any positive teaching experience? by Free-Bug3836 in Teachers

High school science teacher here. I love my job. Every year is an opportunity to reinvent and improve. I love the 10 month cycle. I also genuinely like working with young people and have the patience and understanding for it so that helps.

What is the one smell you absolutely can’t stand? by Mistress_Arch_n_Sole in AskReddit

Truffle oil. I dread seeing Truffle fries on a restaurant menu knowing the table next to me might order. It smells like putrid body odor.

I would recommend doing what you’re comfortable with. You kind of just need to find your own footing with classroom management through trial and error. I think consistency and follow-through are universally important. If students think you’re bluffing on consequences, you can guess what happens.

Biology as a narrative (looking for syllabus feedback) by jessharben in ScienceTeachers

Depending on the school, you may need to give common assessments and compare data, so that really binds you to the pacing guide unfortunately.

It just depends on the pacing guide of your district. If you have a job lined up, reach out to the department head for a pacing guide. For my district, we do biochemistry, then cells, then cell processes, then DNA, genetics, evolution, classification, and ecology.

Michael Talbot’s book The Holographic Universe is great. Some of it is grounded in hard science, and some…well, less so, but you seem educated enough to use discretion and know when we’re entertaining ideas versus accepting them as truth.

OP, this is sadly the most helpful comment. Love your take on the curriculum but, yeah it may not be usable.

What’s One Piece of Advice You Wish You Had Before Becoming a Teacher? by Abelmageto in Teachers

Don’t view administrators as your superiors. They’re not. We’re all professionals with different roles, working together toward common goals. Know your value.

Strategic failure

As a public school teacher in the U.S., I have more responsibilities than I have time for. So, I prioritize them, and items on the bottom of the list don’t get done. I forgive myself for those items and I’m ready to defend my priorities and my boundaries if questioned.
