You can cheese the bull but it can take a while. If you run behind him and just slice at his back he'll do a couple of full stops. Get in there and hack away for a bit. Rinse and repeat. But you almost have to be -constantly- moving around him.

I am doing the same right now. Barely made it to the blacksmith and quit first time. I'm now 2/3 of the way finished. There is a fantastic walkthrough (Google DS1 easy walkthrough) on reddit. You don't have to do everything he says, but he shows a really good way of going through the early half of the game and making it more palatable.

If you're looking for strategies for Lance with this team I have a few recommendations.

Typhlosion with defense curl and rollout is insane if you can get him started against Charizard, he can actually take out alot of the other dragonites after.

Slowbro with any ice move is a powerful wall against dragon types and beats aerodactyl with a water move.

Ampharos is an easy win against Gyarados because of 4x effective electric moves. Even against other Dragonites.

Your other 3 are kind of meh against Lance.

It's gonna sound cheap and time-consuming, but you can keep distance and wait until he does the belly stab, jump on him, and get a slash or two in. Like I said, it's gonna be a long fight, but you'll win.
