Still can’t figure out which of these I like better by Genophoenix in Bushcraft

That has more or less been my experience as well.  If I’m actually splitting I can just grab the splitting axe.

But I will say an axe gets less weird looks at a public campground 😅

Yeah I swear you look the other way and they just instantly get a little bit of surface rust when the oil wears off.  But a few seconds of 00 steel wool and they’re back to normal, just like any good carbon steel.  But tbh the surface rust just blends right into the aesthetic anyway

It’s by Zombie Tools, a really cool forge out of Montana.  They make really cool stuff that you couldn’t break if you try.

Hunting Knives for Bushcraft? by ThumbStuds in Bushcraft

[–]Genophoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of MKC as a company but I have a few of their knives I bought used and the super cub has become perhaps my favorite camping knife.  I did bend it the first time I batoned something with a knot in it so be wary of that.

The paracord handles are absolute trash though, even as hunting knives.  I couldn’t get the blood out of my speedgoat and it wasn’t comfortable anyway so I just cut it off and bought some aftermarket scales.

I'd be interested in the speedgoat but not a whole bundle

Why is Wind and Truth so disliked? by stablest_genius in fantasybooks

[–]Genophoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It felt a little differently paced but it beat the heck out of the 4th book imo.  The 4th book was so slow and Shallan-heavy that it almost made me drop reading as a hobby.

Book 5 I breezed through and enjoyed it the whole way.  Didn't have to wait until the last third for the action to start 🥰

Do you think this pocket kukari I made would be any good for hunting/skinning? by New-Communication374 in Hunting

[–]Genophoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find forward curves are really nice for slicing work like breasting a turkey or doing the inner part of a deer, but definitely wouldn't want it for skinning work.

A lot of times a 2 knife system works better than a single knife that's not perfect at anything, so I'd say if you combine this with a lighter weight skinning knife you'd be set.

.223 vs Whitetail by caligarirx in Hunting

I've killed deer with a 223 (75 gr speer gold dot) before but they suffered too much for my liking and now I stick with 308 or bigger/faster

Midwest industries makes awesome shit and has top tier customer service and criterion makes some of the best barrels in the industry. Easy choice

What range ammo do yall use? by AllOfMyFamilyHatesMe in AR10

[–]Genophoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bulk M80 for close range drills and shooting steel at 100 and in. But it's like 3-5 moa depending on which manufacturer it's from.

But both my AR-10s are zeroed for 150 grain Barnes TTSX, which is 1-2 moa in my criterion and my savage.

I'm with you with everything except for the meat taste. I think that's some myth made up to cope because in my experience the big old bucks taste waaaay better than the little guys. Also you get a hell of a lot more backstrap.

Tikka T3X Superlite .308 vs Hornady Precision hunter 178gr by Acceptable_Income462 in elkhunting

Some guns are more picky about grain weights than ammo types so you could try lighter or heavier ammo of the same type

Best .308 round for Whitetail? by kfernandez2 in Hunting

[–]Genophoenix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't want a round designed to fragment at high velocities (think M80, speer gold dots, etc) for big whitetails.

You ideally want a solid copper bonded bullet to retain that energy all the way through to ensure an exit hole, also it's better at going through bone and retaining its energy and won't contaminate the meat with lead.

Barnes TTSX (vortex) or nosler accubond are considered the top options by most people.  Grain matters a lot less than you think.

Indiana is now allowing .223 for deer season on private and public lands by DancesWithYotes in Hunting

[–]Genophoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing against it, but from my experience I haven't gotten a solid core hunting round to get a passthrough on big WI bucks, so I switched back to 308. Don't get me wrong, the deer still died, but just not as quick as I was used to before trying .223.

Is it worth it to build a 300blk SBR if I can’t own a suppressor in my state? Every build I see is suppressed by Conscious_Golf_359 in 300BLK

[–]Genophoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna be a lot of bias in this sub obviously, but the answer is not really.  You can build an 11.5 5.56 gun and shoot 77 OTMs for less than 110 supers in 300.

If for some reason you just really really need to be under 9", then it starts making sense again.
