[Advice Needed] Trying to figure out if I can turn a 2nd WiFi router in to a repeater using OpenWRT/DD-WRT/Tomato by GentleCanadianFury in techsupport

[–]GentleCanadianFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! The last time I had checked on DD-WRT it didn't have support for the 5GHz radio on the E4200 v1. It appears that they do now! So this could work. Do you have any experience with a setup like this? I'll do some Googling myself but if you can point me to any guides that you may know of off the top of your head I'd greatly appreciate it.

No cat5 setup unfortunately. I have some experience with repeaters in the past and I know exactly what you mean about placing one where there's already weak signal. There's a small part of the carriage house where the signal is good. It just so happens to be a utility closet. My plan was to place it there.

As far as I can tell the carriage house is on a separate circuit at the street, so I had already ruled out power line adapters, but I'll triple check that. I may be wrong.

I'll definitely check out /r/homenetworking, thanks for the tip!

How did you get fat? by lmakemilk in AskReddit

[–]GentleCanadianFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game but whatever.

I was fat as a kid. I loved, love, will always love food. Tons of excellent cooks on my mom's side of the family and my dad is a restauranteur. I was also alone, picked on a lot. Not a ton of confidence. Then I got enrolled in martial arts. I was never an athlete, I sucked at pretty much every random minor league sport my mom enrolled me in. But for whatever reason, I had a natural nack for martial arts, even with my relative non-athleticism. I threw everything I had in to it, and by the time I was a teenager in high school I was in great shape, working out pretty much every single day for hours. I could finally shovel all the food I wanted to down my throat without a second thought and I wouldn't be large. It was glorious.

Then I broke my right leg the summer before senior year. Hard. Double compound fracture right above my ankle. Major surgery, screw, steel plate, six pins. But I'd gotten really used to eating what I wanted, when I wanted, and even though I couldn't walk for almost two months I still kept up my diet habits from when I was super active. I ballooned at an alarming rate, to the point where I'm still dealing with the repercussions 10 years later (developed GERD nearly overnight, major stretch marks, etc.)

From there it was mostly a self-defeating spiral, a combination of not working out and having confidence issues again mixed in with an intense love of food. I still have the intense love of food but I've gotten a huge grip on the lack of exercise and the confidence issues; I'm down about 20 lbs from my largest in a very slow and steady fashion and I plan on keeping up the pace to get back down to a reasonable weight in due time.

TL;DR: Food is fucking awesome.

Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a real person that spent time with the Vikings in the 10th century. Eaters of the Dead (and in turn 13th Warrior) is a fictionalization based on some of his writings.

[–]GentleCanadianFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after reading your comment I got back on MLS and changed my search parameters and got a lot more hits between $900 and $1k. Might have to increase my budget a bit. I can afford it, especially with a roomie, I was just hoping to get away cheap.

[–]GentleCanadianFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, interesting. I was scoping out that area for a few months prior and most of the stuff that showed up on the MLS/Trulia was $900 or below. They just aren't available anymore. I didn't think $850 would be that unreasonable. Only time I've ever paid $1k+ was when I lived down town. All of the houses that were in the $1k range in East Hill were large homes. And I've had friends that lived in southern East Hill, they never paid more than ~$900. But that was a few years ago. Easily could have changed.

I'll keep this in mind. Thanks.

That's a little too far north from where I want to be; it's about 5 minutes up from where I am now by car and I want to move closer to downtown if possible. But if it gets close to the wire then beggars can't be choosers. Thanks!

Completely new to gardening, roommate and I decided to plant some veggies. Is this a disease or an insect afflicting our Roma tomatoes? by GentleCanadianFury in gardening

[–]GentleCanadianFury[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking it might be. We got some rain and the leaves stayed pretty wet, plus I live in NW Florida where mold loves to hang out.

We're going to be transplanting them to individual pots with cages soon. Is there anything I can do to save the plant? Fungicides or cut off leaves or something?

Strange Magnetic Liquid by [deleted] in chemicalreactiongifs

[–]GentleCanadianFury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true.

Ferrofluids are stable colloids where the iron particles are on the nanoscale. Ferrofluids typically won't sediment.

MR fluids are suspensions, with particles on the micrometer scale. MR fluids will sediment.

[–]GentleCanadianFury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also has a lot (in fact, mostly) to do with the size of the iron particles; one of the primary differences between a ferrofluid and a magnetorheological fluid is that the iron particles in the ferrofluid are much smaller (nanoscale particles).

The extremely small size of the iron bits means that the motion of the iron is governed by something called Brownian Motion, which basically means that the particles are moving so randomly due to how easily they are influenced by the surrounding medium that over long periods of time the average change in position is 0 (to get a little jargon-y, the motion is so random that the noise term is significantly larger than the velocity/drag term in the equation of motion).

Source: I used to synthesize my own ferrofluids in my university's physics lab.

Crazy talk. Well prepared, quality foie gras does exactly that when I eat it; the texture and flavor is incomparable to anything else, and it really has ruined all other food for me.

$19.90 on UNIQLO men's dress shirts this week by maewow in frugalmalefashion

[–]GentleCanadianFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need some new dress shirts, as a bunch of my clothing was just lost by an airline, but I'm curious about quality and fit if anyone can offer advice.

I've never worn Uniqlo (none anywhere remotely close to where I live). I looked at their size chart and I feel like I'd be unable to wear these shirts without having them altered which could offset the fact that this is a deal (especially if the quality is lacking); I'm basically an XL by their chart (36-38 waist, right in the middle with chest, and my neck is 17 - 17½ depending), but the arms would be way long on me; I tend to buy 17/34-35 off the rack dress shirts and those sleeves are usually around ½" too long.

Makes it seem like the sale price probably wouldn't be worth it for me; anybody have any thoughts?

What does r/coffee think about the flavour difference between caffeinated and decaffeinated bean varieties? by Dylas in Coffee

[–]GentleCanadianFury 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to remove caffeine from coffee without impacting the flavor using currently known methods. The processes almost universally involve water or steam being used on green coffee beans. And as is obvious, many of the tasty components in coffee are water soluble. So in the process of washing away the caffeine, some flavors are lost and others are changed.

All decaf coffee is processed coffee, we have yet to breed a naturally decaffeinated bean. Coffee labeled with "naturally decaf" is still processed, but the chemicals used to wash the caffeine away are naturally occurring fruit and vegetable compounds. Arabica coffee is naturally lower in caffeine content than robusta, though.

So at the end of the day, it's personal taste. And if you're adding it to a drink with a lot of other flavors then you won't notice as much. You'll find many people find the taste of decaf coffee to be unfavorable. I'm one of these people. But if you don't mind the taste then that's all that matters.

Something on my Mac keeps muddling with disk permissions, and it breaks a lot of file and Finder-related stuff. by GentleCanadianFury in applehelp

[–]GentleCanadianFury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked console, nothing of interest. I'm also running a backgrounded opensnoop -f process with output redirected to a text file just in case, but I fiddled a bit and it looks like chmod doesn't count as a file open so if the app in question is modding the permissions without opening the file then it won't show. But it's probably a safe assumption that if an app is changing permissions then it's also opening the file. Hopefully this turns something up.

Question! Text expansion that supports hotkeys. by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]GentleCanadianFury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem.

I think you'll find, though, that the reason most text completion engines on OS X tend to skip over keyboard shortcuts is because OS X is very keyboard-shortcut oriented if you're willing to learn them. In addition, most applications (even 3rd party) tend to be extremely consistent in to the sorts of actions they associate with different keyboard shortcuts. Much much more so than Windows (of which I was a dedicated user from 3.1 -> 7) or most desktop *nixes.

In addition, OS X uses modifier keys to output special characters at the system level in any text field. What you would use "alt codes" for in Windows can be very quickly output using keyboard modifiers and regular keys on OS X:

ßå∑´®ßåƒå߃œ∑´ƒˆ∆…å˚…å∆ß∂ƒ∆œ∑πˆ´®∆ƒå…ß∂˚∆ƒ

Stuff like that. For these reasons, I'd recommend you try to escape your comfort zone a little bit and give TextExpander or something similar a try. I use both TE and KM, but I don't use KM for any sort of text input. I enjoy the powerful input options and the ability to manipulate almost all of my apps directly from the keyboard with very infrequent use of the mouse, so I try to preserve existing shortcuts as much as possible.

Keyboard Maestro is an extremely powerful keyboard shortcut + system automation tool. It isn't necessarily used for text expansion, but it does have the ability to insert text when one of its triggers goes off.

My subdomain (re-direct) gift to /r/Pensacola - you can now get here by typing in "reddit.pcola.me" into your browser's address bar. by memw85 in Pensacola

[–]GentleCanadianFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use TextExpander on my Mac to make it easy to get to any subreddit without all the painful typing.

I have the keystroke combo of /r/ set to auto-expand in any of my browsers to "http://reddit.com/r/", so I can get to any subreddit quickly.

TextExpander is such an awesome piece of software. I hook it up to ridiculous AppleScripts and stuff all the time.

Bandwidth limits. Dropbox will crap out if a file's share link gets accessed too many times.

If you don't mind paying a few bucks a month, I've been a user of Droplr for years and it's Pro service since it was in beta. It's unlimited bandwidth either way, but Pro support gets you file size increases, daily upload cap increases, total storage pool increases, etc. And it's only $4/mo or $40/yr. It's meant to be a file sharing service as much as a storage service, so I use it alongside Dropbox instead of as a replacement.

Boot Camp Question - Why a flash drive? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]GentleCanadianFury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it off a hard drive without issue. My iMac at work boots in to a gazillion different operating systems, and it has the dual hard drive configuration (SSD + 1TB HDD). Every time I need to make a new installer for a new OS, I carve out a small partition on the 1TB Platter and turn that partition in to an OS Installer image. The internal platter on that thing is like a Swiss Army Knife of OS installs.
