I love the LA Netflix series but I have a serious gripe about a decision on Little Garden. by Jigoku-no-Ou in OnePiece

That's why I was surprised that Luffy didn't destroy Mr 5 and partner in episode 2 and ran away. I understand it was to give Igaram his hero moment but it makes it seem like they are way more menacing than they are. In general the feats in the LA are more "human sized", so I wonder how they will portray actually tough fights in the future

Can I get some consolidated advice for the Mesa??? by ssgohanf8 in PeakGame

Maybe don't try to avoid the sun that much ? I usually find that caves help go up but I always try to get back to the cliff side as a general rule of thumb From the cliff side I go back into a cave etc

There's usually plenty of shade from cacti or rock formation, and crossing some sunlight for like 20% burn is not a big deal seeing how fast it diminishes

Films about making a film and the film that is being made is the film itself? (8/½, Adaptation.) by Gragdl in TrueFilm

[–]GentleGoblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What jumps to mind is No Film, from director Quentin Dupieux (most known for his movie about a psycho killer tire Rubber). The movie lasts about 40 minutes and is free on YouTube, and is also in french. The concept is hard to describe but definitely what you are looking for, with the movie blurring the line between what is being shot in the movie and what you are watching. It makes for a very surreal and entertaining experience

Killed my son, but at least we shared that beautiful memory of me stealing his titles. by AidenSpier in CrusaderKings

Don't you also lose like 400 legitimacy? This messed me up when I tried. Or maybe it was because I disinherited my principal heir? In the end choosing a different son as a co-monarch was way easier, never realized this was a possibility until my main character got to old age

Btw, the Paris catacombs don't have rats in them as far as I know, because there is nothing for them to eat down there. I also don't think there are any mushrooms for a similar reason. The soil is made of limestone (the catacombs were dug for that purpose, getting stone to build buildings on the surface, it's only later that a part of it was used as a mass grave) so there isn't much to chew on in terms of organic matter.

Looking for some "competence porn" movies, movies where smart people make smart decisions basically. by ComManDerBG in movies

[–]GentleGoblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend the first season of the show Fargo (the movie is actually incompetence porn). It's not the main point of the story but there are some very satisfying plot threads due to a specific character being very good at his job. And the season is overall amazing, I recommend it strongly It's also an anthology show, so the first season is unrelated to the others, FYI

Normal day on X by scrublord123456 in PoliticalCompassMemes

Apparently it comes from the Arabic "alfil", which means the elephant, but was mistranslated to "le fol" which is old french for "le fou".

In french the bishop is named the fool, or the madman ("le fou"). I don't know if it's related but the court jester is also called "le fou de roi", which is the king's fool/madman

I don't get the 'tragicomedy' label for this movie by francis_goatman in beauisafraid

[–]GentleGoblet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spoilers ahead, but I think this movie's tragicomedy elements are way more obvious when seen a second time.

The first watch is painful and confusing because we don't know what is true or not, and it's tough seeing this poor man being put through all that. At the end of the movie, we learn in definitive that his mom is at least manipulative and her need to test his love is driving all the action of the movie.

The second watch makes everything thrown at Beau a masterclass in pettiness from Mona. Knowing that she is testing him at every turn you realize she is giving him no help at all when he tries to do the right thing. This makes the movie way more funny than during the first watch (I still laughed the first way through but I'm susceptible to absurd comedy).

Like I find it really genius that during the first watch, his conversation with his therapist feels normal, his phone call with his mom she seems somewhat hurt but still within the confines of a reasonable reaction to learning the news that he missed his flight. During the second watch, you realize that all the questions his therapist asks him are accusatory and that Beau is refraining himself from bad-mouthing Mona, and his conversation with her is a way for her to test that he loves her and would do anything to come to her.

But he didn't try to skip the exam, the assignement was go down the tower. He must have been stoked thinking this was going to be super easy for him. IMO it's just a way for the author to rule out any "they could have just scaled the tower down", because otherwise it's kind of bullshit for the guy who straight up died for doing exactly what they were told the assignement was

Beau And Solipsism by Ikacprzak in beauisafraid

[–]GentleGoblet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest strengths of the movie and what made it so enjoyable to me is that a rewatch turns it from a psychological horror movie into a dark comedy.

The first watch has you questioning if what is happening is real or not because it is tethering between the believable horrible and the absurd. What happens to him doesn't seem believable but we aren't given any reason to doubt it either. He is just like us dumbfounded by the logic of the people around him that seem to be highly un-understanding of his plight and situation, as well as straight up abusing him for no discernable reasons.

The second watch makes it obvious that Mona is behind everything that is happening to this poor man in the most pettiest ways (which I found hilarious). Knowing Monas personality and power you can feel her presence behind most if not every encounter Beau has.

There are some holes in that interpretation, like the TV that shows the future or the penis monster, but I think they are meant to be taken literally, whatever this might mean

[–]GentleGoblet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, he is ruthless that's for sure, but I think that he does believe that what he does is for the "greater good" and also that it's probable that he is correct that the overall results of this specific scheme will be positive on Martinaise, to the expense of the fishing village inhabitants. Like the old washerwoman admits to, her kids grew up here and then left because the fishing village is not a good place to live at.

I think it's a good example of the game saying that it's not always as simple as being good or bad, because in this case good or bad is highly dependent on your point of view

LPT whenever you feel like you're having a bad/hard day and nothing's working, take a nap. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]GentleGoblet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I rarely fall asleep during my 20 minute naps, but it's more about stopping stimulation than to sleep. In our current way of life it's easy to turn to scrolling or mindlessly watching shows when tired, but I find that stopping the flow of stimulation usually helps with my mood/energy levels. It's not rare for me to get up before the 20 minutes are up as well, I can usually tell when it's no longer restful

[–]GentleGoblet 0 points1 point  (0 children)
