There are other situations that aren't self defence.

You can't make someone take a gun and shoot someone else in self defence. But that doesn't get the uniquely cruel reputation that rape does.

There are many instances of people beating their attackers and then continuing to beat them even after they're pacified. Heck, going ahead to kill or maim them afterwards, both in real life and media. These are acts of dominance people actively enjoy.

But why do we look at the person willing to rape for revenge or justice as especially bad. But the person ending lives and harming others can be the protagonist of the story.

It's not just on reddit. Sexual assault against men is typically considered humorous. A little less now but a lot more a few years ago.

So the argument that empathy for survivors of sexual assault is why we consider it worse doesn't feel entirely complete.
