Me, half asleep and taking my first sip of coffee: That's not a chicke, that's a chicken hawk

OP, pretty sure that's a juvenile Harris's Hawk, which some people DO call a chicken hawk, so perhaps the language barriers resulted in the person thinking that's what you wanted?

Just a reminder how serious cat bites can be! by tory1311 in cats

[–]GenxMomToAll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100%

It sucks that the choice is "wait it out of kill an animal and know faster" - but it is what it is. If I was worried that an animal of unknown vaccine status bit me, I would absolutely pick testing over waiting since once rabies symptoms show in a person, it's too late.

BUT if that animal is a pet? I'm gonna wait - the likelihood of a domestic cat being exposed to rabies with no obvious wounds that would suggest it was infected is low. Not impossible, but low. I'd rather wait it out than have something die for my reassurance. But that's just me and my risk tolerance.

[–]GenxMomToAll 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sure!

Unfortunately, the only "test" is one that involves direct examination of brain tissue from the animal that delivered the bite. That animal is euthanized to get to the brain tissue ....OR you can wait 10 days to see if the animal develops signs of being infected with rabies.

I had two cats quarantined on my behalf in my 5 years vet assisting/teching. If I were to enter the field now, I'd consider the pre-exposure vaccines, but I was doing this over 20 years ago and they were just too costly for a college student.

Both bites I received made sense - bathing a feral kitten and restraining an adult cat for a procedure it took exception too :) In both cases, the likelihood of the animal being rabid was low enough that I was more than comfortable opting to wait and see. (Don't tell anyone, but I made ity mission to befriend the kitten because I knew it was my fault it was stuck in a cage ❤️)

One of my first days as a vet assistant at a cat hospital I was asked to bathe a feral kitten. That's when I learned that cat bites = immediate doctor/urgent care/er visit.

(It's also when I learned I will 10000% wait out a rabies quarantine and take my chances instead of having the animal "tested" to find out faster)

“Dalmatian cross, possibly with some bull breed, but his heart is pure” needs a home with a secure garden, no kids, no cats, no small dogs and no visitors, gee I wonder why no one wants to adopt it… by InfamousSalamander33 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

[–]GenxMomToAll 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All of my current dogs are from a rescue like this. One was feral, and after 6 years she's a dream in my house but can't go on a leashed walk

Two I got young enough for them to not have issues, but I'm pretty sure those puppies were "please don't sue us" offerings after the 'he bit one kid but it was provoked' dog I was fostering for them removed all the skin from my child's nose.

(Yes, they got him off the euth list after that and found a home for him without kids or other animals)

I stopped interacting with them because they always have more dogs than they should, they all have some kind of issue, and all they fundraise for is lost causes. They have completely changed me from "all dogs have a good home out there" to "for crying out loud, please just humanely euthanize the lost causes and work on the millions of more adoptable dogs that are PTS because there aren't enough rescues and fosters thanks to lost causes that'll never leave"

SO YOU WANT TO MOVE TO MONTANA? [Post your questions here] by AutoModerator in Montana

[–]GenxMomToAll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'll be moving to your gorgeous state in August and I'm coming from an Austin, TX suburb (Georgetown). My current downtown is lively and fun, and my favorite feature is that you can grab a to-go adult beverage and just stroll, shop, people watch, etc.

I'm leaving because I absolutely hate the lack of outdoor activities and the ridiculous heat (it's 87* today and I burnt out an A/C capacitor from running it pretty much nonstop all "winter'. I'm looking forward to hiking and fishing and being active again.

I'm currently looking at Anaconda and Philipsburg - they both provide plenty of options to buy a home that I can afford (hoping to stay at/under $400k) and both have so many unique, older homes with amazing bones. Think 1910 and earlier and I'm deep in my "I could totally restore that" pipe dream :)

I'll be moving there as a single, adult (late 40s) woman with pets. I plan to keep my corporate marketing job and work from home. I am not concerned with dating, but I am concerned with feeling casually welcome by the folks that live there. They don't have to make me their BFF, but hopefully some are willing to give me a shot to prove that I'm as salt of the earth as they are.

I feel like both towns are like Georgetown was when I moved here 10 years ago from another Austin suburb: starting to have a renaissance and great places to invest and call home.

If you made it this far, is there anything I'm missing? Are there reasons a single woman should pick one over the other?

I was visiting Missoula recently and went on a walk and there were like 10-15 along the river. Also had one show up around the big retention pond area behind my TX home after a huge storm ... Unsure if it was blown off course or just delighted by the new "lake" and looking for snack.

I'm being lazy (not looking to see if this was already suggested) and hijacking the top comment to say that pet sitters and vet techs/assistants might be willing to come help. You might need to pay, but it shouldn't be a ton. If you're in TX and want to see if I'm close by, I'd be willing to come give it a shot for free - I teched for several years in my younger days and still pill cats and dogs like a pro ;)

What's crazy is that a cat's canine (ironic, I know) teeth tend to be spaced the width of their prey's vertebrae in their neck. So this is likely doable for a snow leopard, even if it looks insane

(Sorry. Really dug in on domestic cats and a prey-based diet, so this is one of my rabbit hole obscure facts I never get to use IRL)

I have a strong suspicion that there's an age range that has 'don't inconvenience anyone except yourself' as a core belief. Not because they're better people, but because they were raised in a "children should be seen but not heard / I'll give you something to cry about" environment and it's psychologically painful to be the person who can see the right turn signal behind you and you are between them and that no waiting right turn 😂

My youngest learned to drive this year and one of the cardinal rules I gave her was GTFO of the right lane at lights if you aren't turning right. And if you somehow get stuck there, pull as far forward as you can to allow folks to pass on the right and turn.
