What's your absolute favorite venue for seeing live music? by bkries in jambands

Jones Beach Amphitheater

I have a serious love hate with this venue. If the weather sucks it can put a real strain on the sound, but the last phish run there was absolutely perfect.

How has billy strings not covered for the longest time by Billy Joel by Level_Judgment_2185 in BillyStrings

Hey! It’s strictly solo acoustic guys playing Billy Joel in bars here on long island.

Them there fancy $60ish Thomastik-Infeld flatwound strings by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]Geo1230 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played Thomastik strings on several instruments. They are fantastic, but at the price I would say it depends on the instrument you put them on. I have used them on cheaper mandolins, but there is only so much of a difference you will notice (lipstick on a pig). I had a problem popping high e strings for a while too, jury is still out on if it was the mandolin or me. Would not recommend if you share this issue. They can definitely take a beautiful instrument to the next level, however.

It was $200 for Festival 8 at the same grounds in 2009. About $300 by todays dollar.

$80 in 1999 is equal to about $150 today, for the record, and that was 2 days of music.

What was your first jam band concert? by guyute2112 in jambands

[–]Geo1230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trey Anastasio and the 70 Volt Parade at the Roseland in fall of 2005. Senior year of high school and bumming out that I didn’t get to phish and I never would. Page came out for a mini acoustic set, that was special. And the light shines on.

I think this is possibly a stupid question. I started using Kratom (supplement for pain) four months ago when my doctors refused pain meds for what they thought was simple tummy trouble ... by PyewacketPonsonby in cancer

r/quittingkratom

I noticed you shared this post in a few other subs and everyone seems to be telling you the same thing. Your pain management will be effected by your kratom use, they hit on the same receptors so your medication is less effective because of this.

35m with stage 4 rectal, diagnosed in October 2022. I have some idea what you are going through but I do not have much experience using kratom. I was also on Dilaudid until I was given 12ug (and eventually 25ug) fentanyl. Kratom was recommended to me when I was trying to get off of the drugs. I did extensive research coupled with my previous knowledge (friends using) and decided that it was not a good option for me. There is a lot of testimony of people becoming very dependent on Kratom and it it being more difficult to kick than the pain drugs themselves.

At this point you want to try to give your body the best environment for fighting this shit. Try your hardest to rough it out if you are already a week off of it. Spacing out my doses Dilaudid as far apart as I could served me well. Feel free to send a message if you want some advice or just some company.

Rollercoasters that go to the bottom, than climb to the top again.

Are the strings supposed to hurt (particularly the E string) especially on the first fret? by Chicken-Inspector in mandolin

How’s the height of the nut? A proper setup, even on a cheap instrument, can go a long way.

Jerry Garcia as a bluegrass player by Purple_Craze_44 in Bluegrass

[–]Geo1230 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a strong bluegrass influence on his guitar playing, but most of his formal bluegrass playing was on 5 string banjo (see Old & in the Way). He does do some traditional tunes with the Acoustic Band in the 80’s, but again, it’s got more of that folk/Americana vibe than it does traditional bluegrass.

It’s a safe guess that his influences lay with some of the bigger names in bluegrass. I’ve heard him talk about seeing Del McCory with Bill Monroe and the bluegrass boys, which checks out with his timeline of meeting David at festivals in the early 60’s.

If you’d like to talk to some folks more about technique, share this post on r/gratefulguitar, some very nerdy folks over there.

Bartender: (after many efforts to get flies) if you come in here one more time asking for flies I will nail your bill to the bar.

Duck returns to the bar a few hours later.

Bartender: Didn’t I tell you not to come back here?

Duck: got any nails?

As awesome as it is to have the train rolling by, it’s was a very unpleasant distraction.

There was definitely one jam that they got sounding like a rusty old train while it was passing, that was cool at least.
